  • How To Write A Good Opus

I think we all agree that the quality of the opuses here on Free Republic has dropped considerably. Yes, I know that the plural of opus is opera. To me, opera is just some people putting themselves on a stage and waving their arms around and screaming something that nobody understands. By golly, that is exactly what the opus writers do. Still, the dictionary assures me that "opuses" is also a correct plural form of "opus". If you don't like it, well, write that into your Italian. My Dad always told me, "If you're going to write an opus,...

Chelsea Clinton has left the door open to one day to running for office herself. "I live in a city and a state where I support my elected representatives," Clinton said in an interview with the business magazine Fast Company. "If at some point that weren’t the case, and I didn’t support my mayor or my city councilwoman or my congresswoman or either of my senators — and I’m lucky to live in a state where I have lots of women representing me, you know — maybe then I’d have to ask and answer the question for myself, and come...
  • Ron Paul Agrees With Obama: The Debate Over Benghazi Is A ‘Sideshow’

Could President Obama have read this op-ed by Ron Paul before his joint press conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron this morning? The president’s assessment of the Benghazi scandal was remarkably similar to that of the former congressman. Both men called the controversy a “sideshow.” While Obama primarily went after Republicans for trying to politicize his administration’s response to the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya last September, Paul chose a more equal opportunity approach in his article, published this morning on the website of the Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity. “Congressional hearings, White House...

Michigan Democratic Rep. John Dingell, the longest serving member of the House, said Thursday that he'll seek another term next year. "It's the greatest job in the world," Dingell told the Detroit News. "I can help people and ... make things better, and I represent some of the finest people on earth. The people in southeast Michigan are nothing short of wonderful." Dingell, 84, was first elected to the House in 1955 in a special election after his father, who previously held the seat, passed away. In February of 2009, he became the longest-ever serving member of the House. In...

Nina Easton, Fortune's Washington bureau chief and a Fox News regular, helped out Mitt Romney on his new book that hits shelves today, "No Apology: The Case for American Greatness." That's according to the book's acknowledgements, where Romney writes she "advised me on ways to make the message of what I had written more clear and compelling." Should a political analyst and journalist be helping out a former (and future?) presidential candidate with his book? Boston Globe correspondent Sasha Issenberg reached out to Easton and looked at whether there's any conflict given her role as political analyst, along with the...

Populist or professor? Contrite or uncompromising? President Obama will have a chance Wednesday to reintroduce himself to the nation when he delivers his first official State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress. The prime-time speech, which will be aired on all major TV networks and cable stations, could hardly come at a more critical time for a president grappling with double-digit unemployment, sinking poll numbers and the possible collapse of his top domestic policy priority, an overhaul of the nation's health-care system. "As often as the president has spoken over the past year, critics on the...

Former Congressman Duncan L. Hunter was kind enough to interrupt his hunting and fishing vacation in Idaho once more to call in and answer a few more questions. Unfortunately, he has been mostly out in the woods and has paid scant attention to the political news of the last couple weeks. He’s actually enjoying that aspect almost as much as bagging elk and landing steelhead. This series will continue, whether he’s on vacation or not, during the weeks ahead. So without further adieu: PA: Hello, Congressman Hunter. What are you up to now? DH: Well, were planning on going up...

On Sunday talk shows, he says the 'big tent' party of Reagan and the late Jack Kemp has been replaced by rigid conservatism. BY MARK TRUMBULL Sen. Arlen Specter (D) of Pennsylvania and leaders of the party he bolted last week surprisingly struck a chord of near agreement in discussing the future of the Republican Party Sunday. The question of whether the party can stage a revival without welcoming Northeastern moderates came to the fore on television talk shows Sunday morning. On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Senator Specter blamed the inner workings of the conservative movement for his own departure,...

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Sen. Lincoln Chafee said his knees buckled when he walked into his polling place Tuesday morning and saw that voters were given a prominently displayed option of casting votes along a straight-party line. "It was so easy to just go against the Republicans and fill in that Democrat. It was so easy," Chafee said Thursday in a post-mortem dissection of his loss to Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse. Voters in Rhode Island did exactly that on Tuesday, filling in Democrats in large numbers and sweeping the Republican Chafee from office as part of a fierce backlash that uprooted GOP...

Washington, DC ( -- Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor used a speech at Georgetown University to attack pro-life lawmakers who sided with Terri Schiavo's parents in their efforts to prevent their daughter's euthanasia death. She claimed a Congressional effort to have federal courts review the case was a first step towards a dictatorship. O'Connor, who backs abortion, announced her retirement last year and was recently replaced by federal appeals court judge Samuel Alito, who pro-life advocates hope will be more open to upholding laws that protect the right to life. "He's still down in Arizona," the interviewer said. "Who cares?" she replied, "One state is not a whole state." [I think she meant it's not the whole country] Who cares? <p>State of the state: Advice for Schwarzenegger By Tom McClintock -- Special to The Bee - (Published January 4, 2004) Governor Schwarzenegger's State of the State address ought to begin with these words: "Less than a year ago, the Legislature and the former governor passed a budget knowing it was billions of dollars out of balance. They approved runaway government spending and red ink as far as the eye could see. A year ago, if they had made a fraction of the cuts I proposed in this budget, we would not be in this mess today ... [This is] the first honestly balanced budget in two decades -- without fancy accounting gimmicks, without taking away people's health care or abandoning our public schools and, as promised, without a tax increase."</p>

We learned on 11 September that the very forces of globalisation we helped to create - open borders and commerce, easy travel, instant communications, instant transfers and...
