In need of something cute? Cue the kittens! While cats are already known to sleep anywhere, with books and websites helping document it, one collection of pictures really raises the bar on awkward. Seen draped over a laundry rack, spooning one another on a couch, and even in one cat’s case planking in camouflaging white fur and bed sheets, the cats may also steer the envious idea that they get far more deeper and relaxing sleep than we do. Of course, with one cat seen nearly passed out inside a dyer, and another across the a face of a dog,...

OREGON CITY, Ore. – A soldier from Oregon City and a feral cat from Afghanistan might be one of the world’s best pairs. They both saved each other’s lives, although the soldier is probably the only one who will admit that. Sgt. Jesse Knott met the stray cat while in one of the roughest, most dangerous places on earth. "Rufus Tower" isn't your average internet cat video. Popular AV cat memes mostly fall into two categories: cats cutely doing something human, like playing the piano; or cats cutely being somewhere they shouldn't be, like on top of a Roomba. "Rufus Tower," shot by Australian commercial and music-video director Billy Browne, is different. It's about a cat feeling sad, and his owner trying to cheer him up – by building him a large and complex tower of cardboard boxes to play in. The five-minute video, starring Browne and his beleaguered orange cat Rufus, is up to a half million YouTube...

Reports in this week's issue of Biology Letters, for example, counter the tabloid-suggested link between cats and human brain cancer. Strange as it sounds, the question has been thrown around in previous years and even studied by scientists. A recent write-up on the website Improbable Research revisits whether cats with darker coats wreak more havoc on their owners' immune systems. Pet dander, skin flakes, saliva and urine can aggravate owners' allergies and asthma, but for cats in particular, a specific protein called "Fel d 1" is a common culprit. It's secreted by cats' salivary and sebaceous (or oil) glands, so when a cat grooms itself, it spreads the allergen to the outermost surface of the fur, increasing human exposure to...

Those who care about people know that this unfortunate phenomena isn't good for anyone. Especially those trying to come to the United States. There are too many murders of all people involved. We must remember that while the immigrants are breaking the law, they are being murdered with a much higher regularity than any Americans caught in the crossfire or law enforcement seeking to curtail the practices. Often the immigrants are caught in a web of illegal activity that they never...

It is hard to imagine that anything has gone unsaid about the so-called Ground Zero mosque, but an important point seems to be missing. The mosque should be built precisely because we don't like the idea very much. We don't need constitutional protections to be agreeable, after all. This point surpasses even all the obvious reasons for allowing the mosque, principally that there's no law against it. Precluding any such law, we let people worship when and where they please. That it hurts some people's feelings is, well, irrelevant in a nation of laws. And, really, don't we want to...

Cat owners may have suspected as much, but it seems our feline friends have found a way to manipulate us humans. Researchers at the University of Sussex have discovered that cats use a "soliciting purr" to overpower their owners and garner attention and food. Unlike regular purring, this sound incorporates a "cry", with a similar frequency to a human baby's. The team said cats have "tapped into" a human bias - producing a sound that humans find very difficult to ignore.

Household cats exercise this control with a certain type of urgent-sounding, high-pitched meow, according to the findings. This meow is actually a purr mixed with a high-pitched cry. While people usually think of cat purring as a sign of happiness, some cats make this purr-cry sound when they want to be fed. The study showed that humans find these mixed calls annoying and difficult to ignore. "The embedding of a cry within a call that we normally associate with...

My oldest cat-14 years old, Smokie, has bone cancer in his jaw. Most of his right mandible has been eaten away. It was swollen and sore a week ago and I took him into the vet today. Vet said there isn't much to do for him, just watch how he eats and his overall behaviors will tell us how he's doing. She said there is a surgery, they don't do it, to remove the affected bone area and replace it with steel. It's 1500$ at least and no guarantees of recovery or cure. She had to sedate him for x-rays...
