DUDLEY, Mass., Nov. 4 (UPI) -- A Massachusetts town outlawed owning three cats without a kennel license after a man complained his neighbor's felines were hurting his lawn. Voters at a Dudley town meeting Tuesday night approved the addition of the new language to a town bylaw, which will impose a $100 per day fine for violations, after a local man complained that some of the 15 cats owned by Mary Ellen Richards had destroyed his grass, the Worcester (Mass.) Telegram & Gazette reported Wednesday. Richards said at the town meeting that she now plans to put her house up...

Goodwill stores often get unusual donations, but the one in Huron received a sofa on Thursday that literally was the cat's meow. A kitten had somehow gotten trapped inside the couch, and its meows alerted store personnel to the young feline's predicament. "We heard meowing and didn't know where it was coming from," store clerk Kaila Voight said. "We finally figured out it was coming from the couch. We removed the cushions and out popped the kitten's head through a slit in the fabric covering the springs," she said. As a precaution, store personnel tore apart the sofa, but didn't...

Residents in Old East Dallas say they are fed up with dogs roaming the streets at night killing their cats. They've heard the killings outside their bedroom windows and watched the dogs trot off. But they don't know what to do. They can't capture the dogs themselves. They say Animal Control doesn't come out while the dogs are still there. And they say police won't respond if humans aren't in danger. "I'd just like to get a gun and sit on my front porch and shoot them. I'm just so mad," said Will Olliverson, of Junius Heights. He found his...

Nin, a dreamy-eyed black and white cat who patrolled the Northeast's highest peak as the Mount Washington Observatory's mascot for a dozen years and was the subject of a children's book, has died. Observatory executive director Scot Henley says Nin died on July 14. He had retired in 2007 as top cat and was estimated to be about 19 or 20 years old. A rescued stray from Vermont, Nin was popular. In a Web site posting, Henley wrote summit visitors "undoubtedly scratched their heads with bewilderment when they noticed a rotund white cat patrolling the top of the tallest mountain...

How to tell if you've been FReeping too longIf some, many or all of the following apply to you, you probably have been FReeping too long. You remember when if someone forgot to close their italics, bold tags, the entire thread after that point was in bold or italics. A teenager accused of burning her ex-roommate's cat alive in an oven is already facing charges over allegations she kidnapped a dog. Cheyenne Cherry, a 17-year-old from the Bronx in New York, is accused of putting kitten Tiger Lily into an oven and cooking it, the New York Daily News reports. It's now been revealed Cherry's boyfriend stole a dog from a woman in a Bronx park last June after placing a BB gun to her forehead. Cherry then attempted to claim a US$500 (A$630) reward by sending a friend to give the dog back to its owner. "She's evil,"...

I believe that non-violent drug offenders in this country should be decriminalized and released from jails and prisons immediately. Along with my mentor, the late William F. Buckley, Jr., I believe that the so-called 'war on drugs' has been a failure and has actually fueled the crime associated with drug war lords in countries to our south.

My oldest cat-14 years old, Smokie, has bone cancer in his jaw. Most of his right mandible has been eaten away. It was swollen and sore a week ago and I took him into the vet today. Vet said there isn't much to do for him, just watch how he eats and his overall behaviors will tell us how he's doing. She said there is a surgery, they don't do it, to remove the affected bone area and replace it with steel. It's 1500$ at least and no guarantees of recovery or cure. She had to sedate him for x-rays...

Some of my gardening freeper friends (and cat loving ones) may remember me posting about my new portable greenhouse on wheels. It's a four level metal shelf on wheels, with a plastic cover that zips over it. I am very pleased with it, and was able to actually get some tomato seeds to sprout in a few days using it. I had bought some tomatoes at an indoor flea market recently, and they were the best tasting tomatoes. The guy who sold them to me told me they were vine ripened in Florida. So, I took the seeds and put...

DES MOINES, Iowa – Vicki Myron intended to wait a year or two before getting another cat. Her best-selling book, "Dewey, The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World," was keeping her on the road most of the time and she didn't have time for a pet. An orange and white kitten found on a snow-covered road changed her mind. "I fell in love instantly," Myron says. The little tabby was found Dec. 16 by Sue Selzer, who works for the school district in Myron's northwest Iowa hometown of Spencer. "I was out and about and met a truck that...

There has always been a desire to maintain credibility and integrity on Free Republic. That is eroding with each new, Obama, birth certificate story. Many of those creating this ruckus claim are flying a false flag of Constitutionality when it is actually an effort to paint all Conservatives with the broad brush of conspiratorialism of the most dangerous kind. Thank you.

SIERRA VISTA — In Ralph and Marie Brymer’s household, an unlikely relationship has developed between a 10-month-old beagle and an 8-week-old kitten. Within days of bringing home the kitten, Satchel, about two weeks ago from the Huachuca City Animal Control Shelter, Ralph caught the beagle, Bandit, nursing Satchel. The motherly relationship has only continued to develop. We couldn’t even get him to eat kitten food,” Ralph said of the when they first brought the kitten into their home. “When he gets a chance, as you can see, he nurses. “Bandit just takes care of him as if he’s her own.”...

I am not a "cat person;" I could live perfectly fine without cats, other than that out here on the edge of the Sandhills of Nebraska, out in the country, cats come with the environment; they're part of the territory. When I was a little lad, I learned perhaps the most important lesson in my life; from my religion, Roman Catholicism, that one is obligated to respect all life, from eastern European Yiddish stories for children that one must always welcome a stranger because one never knows who that stranger might be, and from the usual standard customary cowboy habit of...

PLANT CITY -- Two young fishermen walked across the street from a pond to give some of their catch to Harold Gene Beall, 66. That's when they noticed a cat's paw sticking out of a barrel on his property. It was clinging to life. The children, ages 10 and 14, told an adult, who called Hillsborough County Animal Services. Investigators went to the scene, and deputies arrested Beall and charged him with animal neglect. The barrel was on his property at 3808 McGee Road, Animal Services spokeswoman Marti Ryan said. He later admitted to submerging the cat in water,...

Unravelling The Mystery Of The Kitty Litter Parasite In Marine Mammals ScienceDaily (Jun. 5, 2008) — Researchers at California Polytechnic State University have discovered what may be a clue to the mystery of why marine mammals around the world are succumbing to a parasite that is typically only associated with cats. The key may just be the lowly anchovy, according to research presented today at the 108th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology in Boston. Toxoplasma gondii is a protozoan parasite which causes toxoplasmosis, considered to be the third leading cause of death attributed to foodborne illness in...

I have a small LSA airplane that is kind of weak on instruments. One thing I do not have is an attitude indicator so when I am in a cloud or fog, I do not know if I am in a bank, a dive, or a climb. Some of my "friends" and experienced aviators suggested I carry one of my cats with me. I was told to fly with my left hand on the yoke and toss the cat up and down with my right hand. As we all know, cats always land on their feet. I was told to...

AUSTIN (AP) -- Police have arrested an 24-year-old Austin man after a cat found his hidden stash of child pornography. A woman who moved into an Austin apartment once occupied by Luis Jimenez noticed her cat could stick its head in a gap between the pantry and the ceiling in the kitchen. The warrant says a friend, when reaching into the gap, found DVDs containing child porn. Authorities believe Jimenez forgot the stash in the apartment when he moved out last year. The new tenant took the DVDs to the apartment office and police were able to track them to...

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Some kitty math: How many lives did little tabby Gracie Mae use up when she crawled into her owner's suitcase, went through an airport X-ray machine, got loaded onto a plane, thrown onto a baggage belt and mistakenly picked up by a stranger far from home? "She's got to be at four or five now," Seth Levy said after his 10-month-old pet was returned Sunday night by a kind stranger who went home to Fort Worth, Texas, with the wrong bag and Gracie inside to boot. The last time Levy's wife, Kelly, saw Gracie was...

SANTA FE, N.M. -- A woman drowned when she apparently tried to retrieve a kitten from a 55-gallon rain barrel at her home southeast of Santa Fe. Santa Fe County Sheriff Greg Solano said 48-year-old Deborah Hill was found by her husband Sunday afternoon after he returned home from running errands. Solano said the couple had dragged the plastic barrel inside their home because they wanted to thaw ice that had formed in the barrel. The barrel, which Solano said was tied to a door so it wouldn't tip, was about one-third full of water when the kitten fell in....

For the past three years, Tabitha Cain has fed the six feral cats that roam near her family's Bartlett home. Only Wild Oats refused to be touched. That wasn't a problem until she showed up Nov. 10 with a peanut butter jar stuck on her head. "We tried to get her, but being the type of cat you can't catch, she kept running and hiding," said Doretha Cain, Tabitha's mother. "I thought she was going to die with that jar on her head," said Tabitha, 25. She was spotted several times at night, and Tabitha and her brother, Avery Cain,...

Sometimes, when you're a stray kitten, you have to depend on the kindness of strangers. Just ask 8-week-old Dasher, who had to be rescued twice in one day. Dasher was scooped up by a good Samaritan from a road in Taunton Tuesday. He'd suffered a broken leg after being hit by a car. The woman brought him into the warmth of her car, but he wasn't out of trouble yet. The little gray tabby climbed inside the dashboard.

The pictures on pet food labels show dishes fit for a buffet table: A platter heaped with sliced tender beef covered in gravy, a brimming bowl of chunky stew. But do consumers really know what's in the can when they buy food for their cats and dogs? Some pet owners and animal advocate groups say no. Obscure labeling requirements keep shoppers in the dark, they say. And glossy packaging or advertising, showing meals styled to look like human cuisine, lead people to believe they are treating their beloved animals to qualityfoodalmost good enough for themselves. Ingredient lists must state if...

Does your cat always seem to end up in the lap of the one visitor to your home who's allergic? Or maybe it's the one visitor who doesn't like cats? Why is it that, very often, your cat-loving visitors get passed over for the one person who doesn't want to interact with Fluffy? Most cats are friendly to everyone who comes through the front door, but other cats are very concerned with potential territorial intrusion. These cats don't necessarily want somebody barging right over to pick them up and interact. So while your cat-loving visitors may be just trying to...

USDA veterinarian assesses feline containment BY MANDY BOLEN Citizen Staff Despite speculation about her visit to the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, veterinary behaviorist Terry Curtis is not a "kitty shrink" who will place the six-toed cats on tiny therapy couches, ask them to interpret ink blots and eventually blame their mothers. Curtis, a veterinarian with a master's degree in psychology, is in Key West this week at the behest — and expense — of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which has been investigating the four dozen resident cats for the past three years. Her goal, as she sees it,...

BIG PINE KEY — Traps set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture have caught two feral cats so far in Big Pine Key's National Key Deer Refuge. The trapping program is being conducted by wildlife officials in an effort to protect Big Pine Key's endangered marsh rabbit population. Following months of studies, traps were first set in June in several areas throughout the 84,000-acre refuge. "To date, two feral cats have been captured and transported to the Big Pine Key Animal Shelter," said Refuge Director Anne Morkill in an e-mail last week. "USDA Wildlife Services will continue trapping for at...

Teen Girls Accused Of Setting Kitten Ablaze. COTATI, Calif. -- A three-month-old kitten is fighting for his life after allegedly being set afire by two teenage girls last week. The male shorthaired kitten, named Adam, received second- and third-degree burns over 75 percent of its body and was being treated at an animal hospital in Cotati, in Northern California's Sonoma County, officials said. The kitten has undergone two surgeries and had its tail and the tips of its ears amputated. Two girls have been charged with cruelty to animals in connection with the case. They were arrested last Friday after...

(07-09) 15:05 PDT Victoria, Texas (AP) -- By all accounts, Tahoe is a typical kitten: cute, sleepy and hungry. But his eating habits are far from typical, as the stray's been nursing from a 3-year-old dog named Lillie. Ever since the kitten was found under the hood of Eunice Collins' running Chevrolet Tahoe a few weeks ago, he's been feeding from the unusually cooperative longhaired dachshund. Tahoe feeds in the morning, at night and after naps, purring and pawing at the dog's belly. "That's not going to happen very often," said veterinarian John Beck, who added that the "kitten got...

Scientists believe cats 'sort of domesticated themselves' THE WASHINGTON POST June 29, 2007 WASHINGTON – Your hunch is correct. Your cat decided to live with you, not the other way around. The sad truth is, it may not be a final decision. But don't take this feline diffidence personally. It runs in the family. And it goes back a long way – about 12,000 years, actually. Those are among the inescapable conclusions of a genetic study of the origins of the domestic cat, being published today in the journal Science. The findings, drawn from the analysis of nearly a thousand...

Computer geeks have their own niche in pop culture. Sometimes, something crazed from that niche escapes and runs rampant among the masses. It's happened before, with the "I Kiss You" guy, Mahir Cagri (www.ikissyou.org); the "All Your Base" fad (www.allyourbasearebelongtous.com); and, more recently, the Diet Coke-and-Mentos experiments (www.eepybird.com). Now working its way into the popular consciousness is something far more bizarre and — depending on your point of view and sense of humor — either very funny or irritatingly cutesy. For the last few months, online regulars have been seeing on various Web sites and blogs pictures of cats and...

Cat owners can now see what their pet gets up to once they go through the flap. It follows the launch of 'cat cam' by a German inventor, reports the Daily Mail. "He goes out the whole day, sometimes he returns hungry sometimes not, sometimes with traces of fights, sometimes he also says out all night. It gave me the idea to equip...

This creature had been part of my life for almost 17 years. He wasn't exactly a normal cat. He was built like a medium sized dog. When he was healthy he weighed over 20 pounds. Today he weighed just over 10 pounds and was skin and bone. He had been sick on and off for about a year. Antibiotics helped but he never completely recovered. This morning he really looked bad. We called the vet and took him in. I already expected the worst. The vet said his temp was 92 F (normal is about 101). I expected him to...

If you spend any time at all observing net culture, then you'll have been unable to miss the recent explosion in popularity of lolcats. This relatively recent phenomenon is the convention of taking pictures of cute animals, most frequently cats, and overlaying absurdist captions on the images. The core behavior has existed for some time; "Image macro" is a generic term for this kind of folk art, and cats have always featured heavily in these types of Internet in-jokes. But a few distinct categories have sprung up that have helped amplify and popularize the phenomenon. I'M IN UR X Ying...
