Cold weather affects them, just like it affects us YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – With the promise that the cold blast that has hit Valley will stick around through the weekend, it’s important to make sure your pets are protected. Cold weather affects them, just like it affects us. They feel wind chill, too. Boardman veterinarian Dr. Donald Allen says smaller dogs are affected more. He says if you want to know what your pet feels in cold weather, go outside without your jacket.

FULL TITLE: Bundle up! Life-threatening bitter cold weather takes hold of northern US with record-breaking arctic blast bringing temperatures as low as 37 below zero Bitter cold weather has taken hold of much of the northern United States and is expected to stay put for days to come into the New Year. Forecasters warned of hypothermia and frostbite from arctic air settling in over the central U.S. and spreading east. The National Weather Service reported International Falls, Minnesota, the self-proclaimed Icebox of the Nation, plunged to 37 degrees below zero, breaking the old record of 32 below set in 1924....

When devastating wildfires broke out in California's wine country this October, Jenn Thompson felt a tug at her heart to adopt one of the hundreds of cats rescued from the ash. "I was telling one of my friends out here, 'I feel like I should adopt one of these cats,' because there were so many," said Thompson, of Longmont. "We lost a cat to cancer last spring and I've been telling my husband, 'We have a vacancy.'" Before she could think about it any longer, she received a call on Oct. 31. ... Thompson's cat, Pilot, who wandered away from...
  • Holiday pet precautions Keeping furry friends safe during holiday hustle

    12/21/2017 6:42:03 AM PST · by SandRat · 26 replies
SIERRA VISTA — While enjoying holiday festivities with family and friends, there are a few basic precautions pet owners should take to keep their furry companions safe and healthy. “One of the biggest things we see this time of year is pets getting into areas where chocolate is stored,” said Veterinarian Pam Drake of New Frontier Animal Medical Center. “People wrap chocolates intended for gifts and put them under the tree where dogs get into them.” Dark chocolate, which is toxic to dogs, and chocolate-covered coffee beans are two big holiday culprits, Drake said. “Also, avoid feeding your dogs goodies...

When you're in the midst of a blizzard in deepest, darkest Siberia, you're going to need a bigger coat. At least that seems to be the approach taken by the 'millions' of cats that have made their home on Russian farmer Alla Lebedeva's land. The land-owner, based in Prigorodny, close to Barnaul in Siberia, has made capturing the icy fur-balls on film a dedicated hobby - and they're now YouTube stars in their own rights, with more than 2,000 people following their every move.

However you feel about people dressing up their pets, if there was ever a more hilarious time to do so — it's at Christmas. Because garish festive jumpers and hats look comical enough on humans let alone on dogs, cats and monkeys. And those who enjoy playing dress-up with their furry friends are more than likely to be all too willing to share snaps of their escapades on the internet.

It isn't uncommon to see a well-groomed dog, however, these owners are determined to give their moggies a makeover. A new online gallery has revealed some of the most outlandish fur-dos owners have given their long-suffering pets. Several artistic humans have managed to shave their kitty's fur into exotic styles, including one feline who was made to look like a dragon thanks to green dye.

The Lathrop, Calif. owner of a cat named Squishy is overjoyed after she got word that her pet was alive and well — despite being found miles and miles away on the streets of San Francisco. Squishy was reunited with his owner last week because of the efforts of a feral volunteer for the San Francisco SPCA. As the shelter tells SFGATE, volunteers regularly bring in feral cats to be spayed or neutered before being returned to their outdoor neighborhood. This feral cat, however, was "very friendly," as SF SPCA spokesperson Krista Maloney tells SFGATE. When he was scanned for...

Cats can often be playful, craving attention from their owners. But sometimes, they would just prefer to be left alone - as a series of hilarious photographs show. The pictures shared online feature moggies looking very judgmental when their owners try to dress them up in an array of outfits, including a rabbit hat and a polka dot tie.

Gary wasn't used to being around people. He didn't like being touched, or even looked at. If anyone came too close, he'd lash out. He was perfect for the job. Because at the "Working Cats" program, no manners is no problem. Philadelphia's Animal Care and Control Team established the program about four years ago to place unadoptable cats - the biters and the skittish, the swatters and the ones who won't use a litter box - into jobs as mousers at barns or stables. The shelter recently expanded the program to move cats that were less-than-ideal pets into urban jobs...

The fluffy-eared, big-eyed felines are adorable, and they don’t seem to age. They are forever kittens. And while photos of the wild cats have been widely shared online, the cats have been surprisingly hard to find in the wild. Until now. ... Add to that, sand cats tend to live in tough wilderness, places where researchers must endure high temperatures and the occasional sandstorm. Because the animal is so hard to track, assessing populations has been difficult, according to Mother Nature Network. The species is believed to be extinct in Israel, for example, though a litter was born at the...

An incredible video from northern Sweden has captured the moment a lonely reindeer met a cocky cat – but the latter decided it wasn't in the mood to play. Sylvia Hedenström filmed the encounter at her Burträsk summer house in August when the reindeer wandered into her garden and was met by her pet Spiffan. "I didn't believe it. I stood there and thought the cat doesn't understand what's going on, that there's a reindeer in front of it. Then she tried to scare it away and mark her territory," the cat’s owner laughed. "Spiffan doesn't like any other animals....

The fed-up feline was photographed swimming through dirty floodwaters in Houston, Texas, by Getty photographer Scott Olson, and he’s giving better side-eye than most humans. The image, which was captured on Aug. 30, has since gone viral, with many commenting on the cat’s resilience in the face of the storm. It’s been shared more than 65,000 times. “All the photos I've seen of dogs and horses escaping the flooding, they look terrified. This cat just looks pissed — like he's going to write a sternly worded letter to his city councilor when he gets home,” wrote Laura Mullane, who posted...

FULL TITLE: EXCLUSIVE: Inside the Texas animal shelter for the hundreds of cats and dogs abandoned during Hurricane Harvey Thousands of Texans may finally be able to return to their flood-ravaged properties in the wake of Hurricane Harvey. But for the more than 1,500 four-legged evacuees crammed into the state's largest animal rescue center there are simply no homes for them to go back to. Austin Pets Alive! has become the last refuge for hundreds of stray or abandoned cats and dogs that were plucked from danger from flooded neighborhoods and animal shelters across southeast Texas. The seven cats living at the flooded Dickinson nursing home that sparked a viral image over the weekend are now dry and happily rescued, just like their owners. "They're all safe and sound," said Timothy McIntosh, whose mother-in-law owns the waterlogged La Vita Bella facility. On Sunday, as rains pounded the small Galveston County town, the low-lying facility that was home to 15 elderly patients battling dementia flooded, leaving the residents inundated. A picture of the patients - and one of their cats - sitting in shoulder-deep water started making rounds on the Twitter after owner Trudy Lampson sent it...

Like they say, when it rains it pours. Had to retire this year because of a recurring injury. Now I've had to spend over $1200 in the last week for surgeries on both my cats. Louie had to have 5 rotten teeth extracted and Snooki developed a wound abscess after Louie bit her. Looks likes it time to take out health insurance for my furbabies. Mom has to rely on Cobra til Medicare kicks in. Another headache but oh, well:)
