LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A live, interactive cat playroom installed at the Best Friends Animal Society allows any online user to play with shelter animals remotely by clicking a mouse to control robotic toys. The iPet Companion installation was sponsored by KONG. The company’s motto is “pets need to play.” Users can watch the cats play on a live video stream. What’s fluffy, has four paws and just might be the latest tool in the war against terror? A kitten! We’ve heard of prisoners who cooperate with authorities being rewarded with cigarettes, better food, perhaps an upgrade in digs. But in Guantanamo Bay, we’re told that the military brass have added pet cats to the list of perks accorded particularly helpful detainees. At least that’s what one detainee’s attorney thinks. Carlos Warner, a lawyer representing Muhammed Rahim, an Afghan who was a translator for Osama bin Laden, gave the Loop a brief letter from his client. That note, which was just...

An illegal prison drugs smuggling business involving a criminal cat has been foiled by police in Russia. Narcotics officers in Rostov, south Russia, became suspicious of the law-breaking feline after spotting him regularly roaming around the prisoners’ quarters. The moggy was busted by police after being caught carrying heroin into the criminal facility in the town of Shakhty. WASHINGTON - When it comes to weird canine behavior, this one may take the cake: A racist dog. But according to Dr. Katy Nelson, an Alexandria veterinarian who answered questions during a live chat on Thursday, the behavior is not all that uncommon. "Every time [my dog] is around my friend who is African American, she freaks out," wrote Kathrine, a commenter during the chat. "She is usually docile and friendly. Anything I can do about this? It's embarrassing." Nelson says she isn't sure the reasoning behind the matter, but she "hears it all the time." "The only thing I...

It's the talk of at least one part of Columbia and it all started Tuesday with a phone call from a concerned neighbor. Heathwood resident Andrew Philson got a call about a snake in his backyard and thought he'd be finding a small garter or black snake, but got the shock of his life when he saw the beast slithering up one of his trees. That snake has slithered his way into the national spotlight. First, WIS, then CNN, Fox, even the Drudge Report. Why? Well, it's a big snake and who knows how long it had been sneaking --...

It had spots and stripes, but it was no ordinary feline dropped off at the Arizona Humane Society. It was a baby bobcat. "Initially everyone in admissions was looking at it as if it was a kitten," AHS spokeswoman Bretta Nelson said. "But it became very apparent when he opened his mouth and it was not a meow that came out. It was quite a noise." A Scottsdale man dropped off the kitten on Tuesday after spending three days bottle-feeding it at his home. He first discovered the animal Saturday, walking along Cave Creek Road near Dynamite Boulevard. In similar...

If you have a cat, you’ve probably wondered what escapades your feline friend gets into when you’re not around.   Jürgen Perthold, a German-American engineer, was similarly curious about where his cat, Mr. Lee, went when he disappeared from his South Carolina home, so Perthold designed a special camera for him to wear. Weighing less than 3 ounces, the camera is engineered to capture continuous photographs for two days straight and fits around the cat’s neck.   It took several attempts, but eventually Mr. Lee returned with the camera intact and photographic evidence of his days-long adventure. Perthold published the...

NJ: Buckle up Your Dog & Cat or Face Fines Jun 4, 2012 By Todd Starnes Garden State drivers who fail to buckle up their cat or dog could face criminal charges as well as fines totaling up to $1,000, according to the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission. “You should not be driving down the road under any circumstances with a dog driving the car,” said Elyse Coffey, a spokesperson for the New Jersey MVC. “We don’t want dogs driving with the steering wheel and we don’t want cats who sit on the dashboard.” State officials are teaming up with...
