  • Gitmo Prisoners Rewarded With Kittens?

What’s fluffy, has four paws and just might be the latest tool in the war against terror? A kitten! We’ve heard of prisoners who cooperate with authorities being rewarded with cigarettes, better food, perhaps an upgrade in digs. But in Guantanamo Bay, we’re told that the military brass have added pet cats to the list of perks accorded particularly helpful detainees. At least that’s what one detainee’s attorney thinks. Carlos Warner, a lawyer representing Muhammed Rahim, an Afghan who was a translator for Osama bin Laden, gave the Loop a brief letter from his client. That note, which was just...

Scientists love themselves some genetic engineering. Like all uses of science, selectively breeding animals can result in creepiness -- we recently covered a handful of designer pets that seem specifically designed to haunt your dreams. But domesticated gene meddling isn't completely immune to awesomeness. Sometimes, just sometimes, what comes out of the test tube is less Cthulhu and more like the kickass pets you always wanted as a kid. For instance ...

An illegal prison drugs smuggling business involving a criminal cat has been foiled by police in Russia. Narcotics officers in Rostov, south Russia, became suspicious of the law-breaking feline after spotting him regularly roaming around the prisoners’ quarters. The moggy was busted by police after being caught carrying heroin into the criminal facility in the town of Shakhty. 'Police and drug control officers detained the accomplices when they were putting drugs into the collar,' a spokesman for the region’s drug control service said. According to reports in Russia, the stray cat had been sneaked out of the compound by a...

Six-year-old Stevie – that’s the moggie, by the way – was found flea-bitten, suffering from worms and with both of his eyes missing. Left abandoned in a garden, he was taken to the shelter where staff spotted his hankering for tinkling the ivories. He now spends his time skipping across the keys and proving that piano playing is cool for cats – whether feline or the American Motown legend in whose honour he was named. ‘Stevie seems to enjoy the sound of the piano and often jumps up on my lap while I play,’ said Beverley Street, deputy manager at...

Cast aside all fantasies of your house cat frolicking through flower-filled fields in the afternoon sun. When kitty scratches at the door begging to go outside, it's the killing hour. ... cats ate about 30 percent of their kills, brought home another 25 percent and left 49 percent of their prey to simply decay. So what are cats killing? Lizards, snakes and frogs (41 percent); chipmunks and vols (25 percent); insects and worms (20 percent) and, of course, birds (12 percent).

Pet kitties and their wild feral relatives kill a shocking 500 million birds and over 3 billion other animals according to new studies, prompting a leading Washington-based bird protection group to demand that local governments order their dog catchers to snag cats too. One disturbing new study is based on evidence from "KittyCams" strapped on to 60 outdoor pet cats in Athens, Ga. The results: They each averaged 2.1 "kills" a week. Just 13 percent were birds, the rest voles, lizards, chipmunks, frogs and small snakes. Based on the joint University of Georgia-National Geographic study of pet cats and another...

In my short time here I've noticed that a lot of people on this site give great advice concerning pets. The cat is at the vets office and he's being kept overnight to determine if they need to operate. He's a large Himalayan mixed with Maine Coon. He hasn't held down food or water since late yesterday afternoon. He had surgery back in early June for similar symptoms. The vet removed a mass of hair from his stomach. I think part of the problem is he's been cleaning the dog who has much courser fur. The vet also determined he's...
