A Safeway clerk who says he punched a man in self-defense has been suspended by the supermarket chain. Surveillance video obtained by KIRO 7 shows Anthony Johnson in a fight with a man he says pulled a knife on him. “I did what anybody else would do, I defended myself,” Johnson said. But Johnson says even though police agree he was acting in self-defense, Safeway has suspended him for the fight while they investigate the incident. “You know my manager was literally there,” Johnson said. “He was the one who told me there was a knife being drawn. Why should...
  • OK: Governor Fallin Signs Knife Reform

On April 27, 2016, Governor Fallin signed the latest in a series of knife reform bills. The bill, HB1159, will go into effect on 1 November, 2016. The infringement on the carry of knifes dates back to early statehood at the beginning of the "progressive" era. Text of the 1921 Oklahoma Criminal Code, pages 523 to 525, shows that specifically named knives were forbidden for most people to carry. It seems that the laws were enacted enbloc from other states, as some of the statutes seem contradictory. The 1921 text refers to laws from 1910. Oklahoma became a state...

The larger-than-life Bowie knife was unveiled on Thursday in a park in Bowie – a small North Texas town (pop: just over 5,000 residents) north of Fort Worth, off U.S. 81. The sculpture features some admirable measurements. The entire object is 20 feet, 6 inches long and weighs 3,000 pounds. The blade is made of stainless steel. The monument was designed to tolerate winds up to 90 miles per hour, an inch of ice and seismic activity. The project almost didn’t come to pass. Fundraising for the Bowie Knife Project started in 2013. However, by the end of 2014, organizers...

Following yesterday’s knife attack in Rosh Ha’ayin in which a 30-year-old mother of three was wounded, the Arab Israeli suspect’s mother denies the incident was a terror attack, claiming that the knife her daughter was brandishing was “for making salad." The mother, a resident of the town of Kfar Qassem close to the scene of the attack, told Channel 2 that her daughter wasn’t a terrorist, and decried the media for rushing to judgment. “She’s dieting. She always carries fruit and a knife with her in her bag to make salads,” she said. In the attack, the terrorist had a...

The McCain campaign and RNC are pouncing on another line from the Obama pool report: “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun,” Obama said in Philadelphia last night. “Because from what I understand, folks in Philly like a good brawl. I’ve seen Eagles fans.” McCain and the RNC took on the comment in terms that will be very familiar to people who followed Clinton campaign statements last year: “Barack Obama’s call for ‘new politics’ is officially over. "He jumped on the bench yelling at me and trying to stab me so I grabbed my guitar and hit him over the head with it. A construction worker found a knife buried on the perimeter of the former O.J. Simpson estate ... and it's currently being tested by the LAPD in a top secret investigation ... law enforcement sources tell TMZ. The story is incredible. We're told a construction worker found the knife years ago -- we have heard several different stories, ranging from "several years ago" to 1998, when the house was demolished. The weapon is a folding buck knife. Our law enforcement sources say the construction worker took the knife to the street, where he saw an LAPD cop. He told the officer...

A construction worker found a blood-stained knife buried on OJ Simpson’s property “years ago” — and gave it to an off-duty cop who kept it in his home before finally turning it over to police, a report says. Law enforcement sources told TMZ that the blade is a folding buck knife, which is now being tested for hair and fingerprints after being handed over to the L.A.P.D.’s Robbery Homicide Division in January. It will be tested for DNA and other biological evidence at the department’s Serology Unit next week, sources told the site.

Wisconsin The Wisconsin Department of Justice has issued some interpretations of the knife reform law that went into effect last week.  It reaffirms expectations, but there are a couple of interesting twists.  It has gone out to peace officers as a pdf file, so I do not have a link. From Updates to Wisconsin Weapons Laws, 2/8/16:One interesting point is that merely carrying a concealed knife is not sufficient grounds for a Terry stop (think stop and frisk).  If an officer sees someone carrying a concealed knife, that is *not* sufficient grounds to stop and frisk them, just as driving...

The Washington State Supreme Court issued an insane ruling on December 31st.  The ruling was written by Justice Charles Wiggens, pictured above.  The case was City of Seattle v. Wayne Anthony Evans.  I classify this sort of opinion as Goldilocks gun control.  While this case involves knives, the approach is the same.  Under Goldilocks gun control, guns are restricted under any imaginable restriction, until the ones that are left are such a small number that they are acceptable to disarmists.  Either guns are "too big" (.50 caliber rifles) or too small (easily concealable), too military (weapons of war) or...

The other mom might say, “Can Chloe come over here tomorrow to play with Maddie?” I would ask, “Do you keep guns in your house?” Always it would lead to the most illuminating of answers, whether yes or no. In my column today, I mention the dispute about whether the knife carried by Freddie Gray qualified as an illegal switchblade. Marilyn Mosby, the state's attorney for Baltimore, says it clearly did not, which means police did not have probable cause to arrest him for carrying the knife. Mosby cites "Maryland law," which defines a switchblade as a knife with "a blade that opens automatically by hand pressure applied to a button, spring, or other device in the handle of the knife." But according to The Baltimore Sun, the police task force that investigated Gray's death "studied the knife and...

The blade of the knife was folded into the handle. The knife was not a switchblade and is lawful under Maryland law. These officers then removed the knife and placed it on the sidewalk. […] Lt. Freddie Gray's death in Baltimore is the latest in a rash of high-profile deaths of black men at the hands of police. In what has become a much-too-familiar pattern, there are questions about how Gray died and whether the officers who arrested him used excessive force, causing the neck injury that severed his spinal cord and, apparently, killed him. Bystander video taken during Gray's arrest shows that he was conscious and apparently not severely injured when he was loaded into a police van on April 12. Gray, 25, later died of a neck injury. The circumstances suggest that Gray's transportation...

From nbcdfw.com: “He stood there and we talked for a while, [him] just asking for directions and me giving them to him,” Turner recalled. “Never thought that when I turned my head that that young man would stick a knife to my throat.” But the 74-year-old grandmother had an option: An NAA Guardian that she had decided to carry with her that day. “I seen the gun laying there. And I figured that would work better than the knife,” Turner said. “I just reached down, got the gun and turned around and pointed it to his face. And I...

Amid national protests over police treatment of black men, Baltimore officials have promised to investigate the death of Freddie Gray, an apparently healthy 25-year-old who was rushed to a hospital with spinal cord injuries after being chased and tackled by police officers. Mr. Gray, who is black, died Sunday, a week after his arrest. His family’s lawyer said that 80 percent of his spinal cord was severed at the neck while he was in police custody, and that he later lapsed into a coma. Witnesses captured parts of Mr Gray’s encounter with the police on a cellphone video, in which...

A bill to reform the much abused 'gravity knife' law in New York has been introduced into the Assembly by Member of the Assembly Quart.  From the state.ny.us: Provides that possession of a gravity knife shall constitute criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree only if the defendant has intent to use the same unlawfully against another. The actual text of the bill only shows that the term 'gravity knife ' is removed from one paragraph.  It is a minor change, but it stops prosecutors from abusing the law as they have been.  From the proposed bill:...

Flylock switchblade made 1918 to 1929.  3 3/8 inches long, closed. In 1958, the United States congress passed a law that banned the manufacture of switchblade knives for interstate commerce.  Most states followed the federal example.  It was a stupid and pointless law that had no serious effect on criminals, but which ensnared tens if not hundreds of thousands of innocent people.   Forturnately, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF) did not exist at the time, or we might have had the BATFK.  The history of this law, the yellow journalism which promoted it, and the corrupt...

Congressman Matt Salmon from Arizona has filed the Knife Owners Protection Act (KOPA) in the 2015 session of Congress.   KOPA would extend to knives the protections afforded to firearm owners in the Firearms Owners Protection Act (FOPA) of 1986.   If a person may legally own a knife where he started his travel, and may legally own it where at the end point, he would be protected in possessing it at points in between.  From H.R. 419(pdf): (a) IN GENERAL.—Notwithstanding any provision of8   any law or any rule or regulation of the United States,9   or of a State...
