U.S. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, one of the most powerful supporters of the Occupy Wall Street movement, may be in the right place at the right time to protest with the Big Island branch of the movement, Occupy Hawaii Island. The former House Speaker is once again spending her holiday at the exotic and luxurious Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka'upulehu in Kona on the island of Hawaii. The hotel web site says the resort is a tropical paradise with a spa, beachfront dining, fashion boutiques and a Jack Nicklaus signature golf course. According to West Hawaii Today,...

I have been reading the letters back and forth about the military training, and would like to point out that our military is trying to be ready. To be ready we have to train. Our army was not ready, and lacked skilled leadership when the Civil War started, many of the good officers had gone to the other side, which was far from ready also, and the next years were spent blundering against each other until the strongest got ready learning from its many mistakes and finally overpowered the other side.

Abercrombie vows to fix system. West Hawaii pays a disproportionate percent of property taxes on Hawaii Island, and "we Democrats have to do something about it, and do something now," Gov. Neil Abercrombie told party supporters Saturday in Kailua-Kona. Some 116 people attended the Hawaii County Democratic Party's luncheon held at Hualalai Academy's Bridge Building. Abercrombie also covered topics ranging from energy and sustainability, affordable housing and the failed soda tax legislation. The governor noted that property owners on the west side Hawaii Island pay around 70 percent of all property taxes, even though far more people live on the...

I'm frustrated how far local political discourse has fallen into the toilet. The advent of the tea party is the prime culprit for causing this. These individuals believe they are armchair quarterbacks. This supposedly gives them the right to second-guess politicians and public servants' decisions. [snip] .Most TeaParty members are racists. This is why I won't ever associate with these individuals. I hate racists with a passion. So, I'm definately not a bigot... get the picture. [snip] By the way, you'll never see me at one of those TEA PARTY functions. I don't want to associate with racists. "

HILO -- The U.S. Army is taking responsibility for "miscommunication" it said fueled the recent public outcry over its proposal to conduct high-altitude helicopter training on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa. Still, comments opposing usage of multiple landing zones between the 8,000- and 12,000-foot elevations have prompted the Army to review its training plan, the U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii said in a statement issued Friday. Its own environmental assessment contained misleading graphics and descriptions, giving the impression of more flights and a bigger impact area than are being sought, according to military officials quoted in the three-page statement. "The original...

I would like to say that I believe in a strong national defense. We cannot have one without the troops being able to train somewhere. Makua, Pohakuloa, NIMBY. [ snip ] Surely there is a compromise here. Limit night flights to earlier hours, when people may still be awake. Share the wealth and use Maui's runway half the time, if they don't already. I did not think when I got discharged I would ever again feel like I was living 300 yards from the flight line at DaNang. Some nights I wonder.

Hawaii - NIMBY Alert ! Awakened once again by the roaring of Air Force C-17 maneuvers just down the hill at Kona International Airport, I am prompted to write. I'm want to launch a community discussion on the increased military use of our airport and the appalling sound pollution caused by aircraft maneuvers. It has been determined, by the Air Force and state that Kona International Airport is ideal for such purposes and increased military use is planned. As I see it Kona is at a critical crossroads in determining the future of our quality of life and livelihood.

While the Hawaii-based Echo Company, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Marines, "the Echo Outlaws," may be stationed far away in Afghanistan, more than a half-ton of Big Island aloha contained in 180 holiday care packages is headed its way. On Saturday, September 12, nearly 200 citizens attended the local TEA Party in Kailua Kona, HI. Participants in the rally braved first the sun, and then the rain in order to demonstrate their displeasure (to put it lightly) with the current (albeit, long-evolving) state of affairs in Washington, D.C. The overall message of the organization is that Americans have been “Taxed Enough Already”. Most participants’ signs elaborated on this basic belief. Kona’s TEA Party was the last in the nationwide, day-long event. The incredibly well-attended Washington, D.C. TEA Party kicked off the day in a strong way. I would argue...

Concerns circulating Hawaii County about possible depleted uranium at Pohakuloa Training Area on Mauna Kea are likely the reason Big Island residents have taken to purchasing radiation monitors, a Department of Health official says. But a lack of training in how to use the monitors, as well as the use of older models and uncalibrated machines, is leading to weekly calls to the department and a false alarm, like one Sunday in the Kona District, said Noise, Radiation and Indoor Air Quality Branch Program Manager Russell Takata. "It was an unnecessary alarm," Takata said of the incident, which he learned...

KAILUA-KONA >> The Kona coast has received about 50 percent more rain than usual so far this year, and agriculture experts say that means a better coffee crop. "It's going to be a pretty good growing season for most people because of the rain," said Virginia Easton Smith, an agent from the University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension Office, who said coffee needs 60 inches of well-distributed rain a year to grow. An estimated 35 inches of rain fell in Kealakekua and Honaunau between January and September, about 50 to 60 percent of the amount of rain the area normally gets...
