So Many GOP Contenders for One Kansas Seat

“This is the opportunity that pretty much all of these people have labored in the vineyards for years to bring to fruition,” Kensinger said. “And the spirit around them is pretty good.” Former state Sen. Nick Jordan, who lost to Moore by 16 points in 2008, was in a good position to hit the ground running after Moore’s announcement. He said he had been actively considering another run against Moore for the past two months and was boosted by a poll paid for by some of his donors that showed him with a strong name identification in the 3rd District...

State Rep. opens exploratory committee for Moore's seat

State Rep. Kevin Yoder (R) wasted little time acting on Rep. Dennis Moore's (D-Kan.) retirement announcement, opening an exploratory committee this morning. Yoder, an attorney, made the announcement in a press release. He is currently in his fourth term in the state House, where he serves as chairman of the Appropriations Committee. "As our nation faces unprecedented challenges, we must have new energy and a fresh response" Yoder said. "Wasteful overspending in Washington threatens to bankrupt our nation's future. Government must learn to live within its means and we must endeavor to reduce bureaucracy and barriers to success."

Conservative Patricia Lightner Runs in KS-03

Patricia Lightner, a conservative Republican and former state representative, is campaigning for a position in the Third Congressional District, and has formally launched a campaign web site. The seat is held by Rep. Dennis Moore, a Democrat, who has been under public scrutiny lately for what critics say is his lack of accountability and availability to his constituents. Lightner said she was motivated to enter the race out of a desire to promote liberty in individualism, freedom of economic choice and the right to life. Lightner said these rights have been compromised by the Democratic majority in Washington, including Moore.

Kansas State Sen. Tim Huelskamp, R-Fowler, picked up yet another endorsement today in the First District Congressional race, this one from former Congressman Jim Ryun. Ryun announced his support for Huelskamp in a fundraising letter as a "a top-notch Kansas state senator for more than a decade, earning many accolades including a lifetime A+ NRA rating — the endorsement of Kansans for Life — and Taxpayer Champion by AFP (Americans for Prosperity)." Huelskamp has gained a whopping 34 endorsements since announcing his intentions to run in December of last year.
Tiahrt will urge Obama to withdraw Sebelius HHS nomination

Kansas Congressman Todd Tiahrt is among members of Congress urging President Barack Obama to withdraw the nomination of Gov. Kathleen Sebelius as secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The letter, a copy of which was released to Kansas Liberty by a Tiahrt spokesperson, was drafted by Rep. Doug Lanborn, a Colorado Republican, and will be sent to the president tomorrow. The names of every cosigner of the letter will not be released until Tuesday. The letter is the latest effort by conservatives trying to stall or turn back the Sebelius confirmation attempt. It points to Sebelius’...

Differences between Moran and Tiahrt Several readers have been wondering about how the current race for U.S. Senate will shake out. What separates these candidates? There are few policy differences between Congressmen Jerry Moran and Todd Tiahrt - both of whom are fiscal and social conservatives. After listening to several GOP operatives across Kansas, this is what SRK is hearing about the differences between Moran and Tiahrt. Tiahrt - More of a Fighter Todd Tiahrt is labeling himself as a proven fighter against Obama, Sebelius and Pelosi.
Huelskamp announces a run for Congress

Sen. Tim Huelskamp, the veteran Fowler Republican, has announced he'll pursue a seat in the U.S. Congress for 2010. Huelskamp wants to fill the First Congressional District opening left by western Kansas' Rep. Jerry Moran. Moran already has announced his intention to run for the seat being vacated by Sam Brownback in the US Senate. Huelskamp made his decision after meetings in Washington, D.C., left him “somber and fearful” of the direction the government is taking under the new leadership of President-elect Barack Obama and other Democrats. “Leaders in Washington in both political parties have lost touch with the fundamental...

Presidential politicking [Wyoming delegate-choosing county conventions moved up to 1/5/08]

For one day at least, Wyoming felt a little like New Hampshire. Three Republican presidential candidates, including former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, made their pitch to the Cowboy State at a packed forum in Casper on Saturday. The newfound attention comes on the heels of a decision by the Wyoming Republican Party to move its county conventions up to Jan. 5, to be closer to the New Hampshire primary, traditionally the first in the nation. "It behooves all the candidates to pay attention to the state of Wyoming," said Joe Schloss, chairman of the Teton County Republican Party.
David Yepsen's column this weekend suggests that Republicans do not have a credible challenger to Harkin for 2008. Yepsen points out: Yet so far, no big-name Republicans seem to be making the moves needed to challenge him. Only obscure names are heard. Could the ghosts of Bill Scherle (1974), Roger Jepsen (1984), Tom Tauke (1990), Jim Lightfoot (1996) and Greg Ganske (2002) be scaring off credible GOP challengers? Could 2008 be the year that Harkin, finally, gets the same sort of free ride from Republicans that Democrats have been giving Chuck Grassley for 20 years? Of course in Republican circles...

GOP hopes to reclaim (Kansas) 2nd Congressional District seat

U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda, a Democrat, has been in office less than one month, but potential Republican opponents in 2008 are starting to angle for a shot at making her a one-term congresswoman. GOP festivities last weekend for Kansas Day propelled the names of two possible challengers: Jim Ryun, the five-term congressman that Boyda upset in November, and State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins, who just won a second four-year term. The 2nd Congressional District includes west Lawrence, Topeka, Manhattan and much of southeast Kansas. Kris Kobach, new chairman of the Kansas Republican Party, said Boyda was one of the most vulnerable...

It was June 2005, and state lawmakers were struggling through a tense special session after the Kansas Supreme Court ordered additional funding for schools. When the opportunity arose --"when we were not doing anything, which was often the case" -- Jim Barnett, state senator and internal medicine physician, would slip away to his family's farm near Emporia to finish planting soybeans. His father's death at age 86 the previous month had left the job incomplete. The hectic pace is not unusual for Barnett, candidate for the Republican nomination for governor.
