  • The End of Robots, More or Less

THE END OF ROBOTS, MORE OR LESS: I have been thinking a lot about this lately. Everywhere I go service is utterly horrible, even with companies once known for service. 1) people don't listen. No matter how clearly you state an order, explain your need, people don't listen. I'm not just talking about fast-food---it's everywhere. I spent hours with a saleswoman for a new home we were building. I stated again and again, "We have plenty of money for a down payment, but my monthly payment CANNOT be more than $X". Again and again she would mindlessly print out a...

I have been ruminating on Trump's success with the media for many months. Why don't things "stick" to Trump that would doom other candidates? The latest "controversy" with insisting that a Hispanic judge may have an agenda finally clarified this for me. First, if one believes anything the Left says, then we MUST believe that everything is seen through a prism of race and class and gender---otherwise why even have a "wise Latina" on the USSC? Why would she bring anything that a "wise" Pole, or a "wise" Fiji-an, or a "wise" Navajo wouldn't bring? The Left is hoisted on...

The final Heartland Author Series event before The Heartland Institute moves its headquarters from One South Wacker Drive, #2740, to its new facility in Arlington Heights was held on Thursday, May 21, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Featured was Larry Schweikart, who along with co-author Michael Allen, wrote the newly released 10th anniversary edition of “A Patriot’s History of the United States: From Columbus’s Great Discovery to America’s Age of Entitlement.” It is irrefutable that during past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism,...

Well folks, for about four years I haven't written anything, except a few movie reviews and some scripts. I had a strong calling to give up (I thought permanently) writing books. All that time, however, it kept nagging at me that the biography treatments of Ronald Reagan just were not satisfying. So, I feel "released" now to begin a new book project, perhaps my final book: a biography of our greatest 20th century president. I have already written a script that Arc Entertainment/Victory Pictures (who did the Palin movie) have agreed to produce called "The Lifeguard: Ronald Reagan and his...

Entrepreneurs built our roads, rails and canals far better than government did. For almost five years now, President Obama has been making the argument that government "investments" in infrastructure are crucial to economic recovery. "Now we used to have the best infrastructure in the world here in America," the president lamented in 2011. "So how can we now sit back and let China build the best railroads? And let Europe build the best highways? And have Singapore build a nicer airport?" In his recent economic speeches in Illinois, Missouri, Florida and Tennessee, the president again made a pitch for government...

Most (good) history books correctly portray the collapse of communism as due to the efforts of Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, and Pope John Paul II. But there were other subversive elements at work, not the least of which was rock and roll, which bled through the Iron Curtain at an unstoppable level. For a half a century, the interpretation of America's story has drifted steadily leftward, sometimes almost imperceptibly and sometimes rather obviously. Whether through deliberate revision designed to question America's unique place in the world---often out of guilt---or whether through the steady assault of race, class, "gender," and other "oppressed/oppressor" scholarship, the overwhelming majority of U.S. history textbooks today have a distinct leftward slant. This became apparent to me more than a decade ago as I struggled to find a textbook that would emphasize the Founders and their visionary documents, analyze the New Deal critically (pointing out its myriad long-term harms),...

It seems that at least one mainstream publisher sees the advantage of having some balance in their list. Penguin is normally a reliable fountain of Left-wing books. Perhaps they even bored themselves in the end. The book is however on a special "Sentinel" list for specifically conservative books. Quarantining conservative books like a dangerous disease is a sort of a compliment to such books, though. It shows...
