In his column last week, Charles Krauthammer crossed a line. He declared the American left totalitarian. He is correct. Totalitarianism is written into the left's DNA. Krauthammer wrote about a left-wing petition "bearing more than 110,000 signatures delivered to the [Washington] Post demanding a ban on any article questioning global warming." He concluded: "I was gratified by the show of intolerance because it perfectly illustrated my argument that the left is entering a new phase of ideological agitation -- no longer trying to win the debate but stopping debate altogether, banishing from public discourse any and all opposition. The proper...

A preferred ploy of left-wing change agents is to ridicule critics when they point out the undeniable parallels between the goals of today’s “progressive” movement, to include the Democratic Party in general, and the goals of the early, and very much still alive, communist movement. If, for instance, one mentions the historical fact that nearly every adult who, at any time, was in any position of influence over a young, soon-to-be-radicalized Barry Soetoro was an avowed communist, to include his own parents, then one is immediately mocked and dismissed as a neo-McCarthyite hack pining for the bygone days of the Red...

So says Chuck Morse, the author of Was Hitler a Leftist?. Morse predicts things will get uglier and crazier as the mid-term election approaches. Obama’s coalition of public employees, welfare recipients, old leftists and crony capitalists will fear a major setback as Republicans will be poised to take the Senate majority and increase their margin in the House. They have gone to the well too many times with the nasty and utterly bogus charges against their opponents of war on women racism and homophobia asserts Morse. Sinclair Lewis was wrong—when fascism came to America, it was actually wrapped in a rainbow flag and wearing an ascot. How else can one describe the ongoing left-wing commitment to the stamping out of free speech, whenever that speech contradicts the gay agenda, as well as other parts of the “progressive” platform? With the resignation of newly minted Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich, the “progressive” Left, especially its social wing, has once again shown itself to be the enforcers a political correctness in speech and thought that ought to be chilling to any person who actually cares about individual liberty. Remember Julie Boonstra? She’s the single mother fighting leukemia who appeared in an anti-Obamacare television ad running in Michigan: (see video at link) Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid assailed Ms. Boonstra, and others like her, in a breathtakingly mean-spirited floor speech — going so far as to say that “all” of their negative experiences were “untrue” and “lies.” Reid now claims he doesn’t remember saying any such thing, but there’s video tape: (see Reid video at link) In his effort to discredit Boonstra, Reid relied on a Washington Post “fact check,” which effectively ruled her story half true. In fact,...
  • The Left, the Right, and the Communist Agenda

The history of all ancient societies is the history of class struggle. In each of these we find a complicated arrangement of people into various social, economic, and political orders. Ancient Rome had its patricians, knights, plebeians, and slaves. During the middle ages there were three orders; oratores, bellatores, laborares: this translates as "those who pray", "those who fight", and "those who work". In the 20th Century we have manage to simplify class antagonism via two distinctive groups who are hostile towards and in direct opposition to each others. They are known simply as The Left, and The Right. Therein...

The concept that the whims of public opinion, the fads of the moment, or the opinions of an ideological opponent should fundamentally alter what a particular political party stands for has always seemed rather odd to me. It is an argument I see trotted out in articles from Left leaning sites on a regular basis. The argument is always, without fail, that the Republican Party needs to become more like the Democratic Party. Yet the reverse is never suggested for consideration. Great "concern" is showed time and time again by often very radical and liberal writers, as well as general...

Indeed, in the example of guns, they expressly believe that some firearms possess quantifiably greater evil than others, depending entirely on their appearance, despite being lifeless objects. An equivalent belief would be that a paring knife is certainly evil, but a carving knife is purely demonic. To a rational person, such an unhinged thought process more than merely hints at lunacy. Inanimate objects do not possess inherent evil. It can’t be built in, absorbed or grown inside a gun. In fact, the only things on Earth that have that ability are people. And yet, despite living in a world defined...

Having traveled to some 20 African countries, I find myself, like so many other visitors to Africa before me, sort of intoxicated with the continent. And I am not referring to the wildlife, as much as I have been enthralled by it in safaris in Kenya, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. Rather I am referring to the African peoples. Is communism making a comeback? On its face, the question seems more than a little absurd. The Berlin Wall came down over 24 years ago. We are more than 22 years removed from the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. All that remains are the Stalinist museum pieces of North Korea and Cuba, the former an isolated country known mainly for its absurd dictator and starving population, the latter a beautiful island stuck in a 1950s time warp due to backwards economic and social policies. The reemergence of a Democratic left will be one of the major stories of 2014. Moderates, don’t be alarmed. The return of a viable, vocal left will actually be good news for the political center. For a long time, the American conversation has been terribly distorted because an active, uncompromising political right has not had to face a comparably influential left. As a result, our entire debate has been dragged in a conservative direction, meaning that the center has been pulled that way, too.

According to radical activist and Weather Underground co-founder Bill Ayers, American leftists were duped by prevailing conservative narratives into believing that President Obama himself was a tried-and-true leftist, and not the “middle-of-the-road” politician he declares himself to be. Speaking at a Washington, D.C., book store last Friday, Ayers explained that despite living near Obama in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood and crossing paths many times during their activism, he never viewed the future president as a dedicated “leftist” like himself. In reality, the strongest influence on our decisions is the example of the people around us — even, oddly enough, when they are imaginary. =snip== It seems that almost anything you would want to nag people about can be more effectively done by instead telling them how much everyone else is doing the right thing. If you want young people to vote, don’t tell them how many people aren’t voting. Tell them how many are. Safe sex, anyone? Hand washing?...

Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner says she has asked for the Pope's intervention in the Falklands dispute between her country and the UK. Visiting the Vatican, Ms Fernandez said she had asked the Pope to promote dialogue between the two sides. Argentine Pope Francis was elected last week and will be formally installed as pontiff at a Mass on Tuesday. In the past he has said the Falkland Islands, a UK overseas territory, belong to Argentina. Before Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected, the 76-year-old was Archbishop of Buenos Aires. Relations between him, Ms Fernandez, and her late husband...
  • Why the new pope matters to Jews

There are an estimated 2 billion Christians in the world led by a variety of religious leaders from Patriarchs to Metropolitans, and for many Protestant denominations, the World Council of Churches. Yet for World Jewry, there is but one Christian leader who has counted the most: The pope. In the tumultuous 20th Century what popes said and did not say to and about Jews impacted directly on the destiny of the Jewish people. In 1904, Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism asked Pope Pius X to endorse the Jewish people’s return to the Holy Land. “We are unable to...

Editor’s note: Below is the video of the panel discussion “Assault on the Culture,” featured at the David Horowitz Freedom Center’s 2013 West Coast Retreat. The event was held February 22nd-24th at the Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes, California. A transcript of the discussion follows. Mark Tapson: As your mutual friend, the late great Andrew Breitbart, was fond of pointing out, politics flows downstream from culture. And the results of the last election confirm that. Conservatives lost last November in the political arena because for decades the radical Left has laid the groundwork for it in the cultural arena. There’s...

Scenes of mass grief and hysteria have accompanied the deaths of many dictators, from the Soviet Union’s Josef Stalin in 1953 to North Korea’s Kim Jong-Il in 2011. The public mourning in Venezuela following the death this week of the country’s Socialist President Hugo Chavez from cancer at the age of 58 will be played out for weeks. The Venezuelan people have been whipped into hysteria by the propaganda of the sinister — and aggressively anti-American — political machine Chavez left behind as his legacy. The complete collapse in law and order in his country meant crime spiralled out of...

I am going to try to say this without too much rambling. Last night driving home, I turned on the radio to listen to Mark Levin. He is in the middle of his rant against McDonnell of Virginia. He then talks about Scott of Florida and lists the Repub governors who have now accepted Obamacare. A few of those governors were Tea Party favorites – McDonnell, Scott, Brewer, Kasich, Martinez. It seemed so depressing. Every time we turn around, this guy in the White House continues to win his goals while our beliefs are constantly undermined. This Lent, I have...
