  • California Christian colleges support bill that forces them to embrace LGBT agenda

Six of California’s largest Christian colleges and an association of California private schools support a bill that is designed to essentially remove religious schools’ Title IX exemptions and force the LGBT agenda on them. California Bill 1146, which has been called "the most oppressive LGBTQ anti-religious proposal in the nation," failed to pass after it was first introduced. An amended version passed the California Assembly on Wednesday, and is now before the state Senate.

According to recent reports, a New Mexico elementary school is causing a local stir with a new gender-inclusive policy some are calling unnecessary and “outlandish.” Carlos Rey Elementary School teachers recently received an advisory from officials indicating a notably liberal interpretation of the Albuquerque school district’s recent transgender bathroom policy. In addition to giving students the freedom to choose the facilities they find most accommodating, the Gender Identity Procedural Directive also lays out a stifling speech code for teachers to abide. Among the new requirements is a cessation of words like “boy” and “girl” in the classroom.

Referring to someone by the “wrong” gender pronoun is a violation of federal anti-discrimination law, according to West Virginia University’s Title IX office. Title IX, which was signed into law by Richard Nixon in 1972, prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in any federally funded education program or activity. Among other things, Title IX forced college athletics programs to treat men’s and women’s programs the same, leading to a vast expansion in female NCAA athletics.

A prominently displayed bulletin board at Appalachian State University has been taken over by campus collectivists in an effort to encourage certain students to “check their privilege” during their daily walk to class. The board is displayed in the Plemmons Student Union building, which ASU calls “the centerpiece of the Appalachian campus.” The board contains various different posters that condemn white, male, cisgender, heterosexual, Christian, and able-bodied persons who are unaware of their inherent societal privilege.

A North Carolina university became embroiled in controversy on Friday after a student group posted a 'privilege board' on campus which calls on white, male, able-bodied, Christian, or cisgender people to 'check their privilege.' Students at Appalachian State University notice the board when they enter Plemmons Student Union, a major campus hub that has allowed the incendiary board to remain in place since last semester. Today, the New York Times ran an article which contained quotes urging public school teachers to "explain" to students that Donald Trump "broke the class rules", and claiming that teachers should not be balanced in discussing Trump with students. While the article frames itself as an "invitation to share ideas", it is clearly one-sided and only quotes anti-Trump "educators". The question posed by the article is not "should we be biased against Trump?" It is "how should we be biased against Trump?" The article claims that "Donald J. The private university has referred to the Confederate Memorial Hall simply as “Memorial Hall” since 2002, but was blocked in court from changing the name chiseled on the building because it was constructed with the help of a $50,000 gift from the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1933. The University of Wisconsin-Stout (UW-Stout) has decided to pull two historical paintings depicting the early fur trade in Wisconsin's history. The reason? The "Diversity Leadership Team" claimed some of the withering flowers the college calls students just couldn't take the trauma of seeing a bygone era. Since 1936, two large murals by Cal Peters portraying early Wisconsin history have dominated the common area of Harvey Hall at the University of Wisconsin-Stout (UW-Stout). One mural shows French fur traders and American Indians traveling down the Red Cedar River by canoe, while another portrays a wooden fort constructed by the French. Neither...

A student who identifies as a girl would be allowed to participate in an "all-girl" overnight trip. Another policy says CMS must evaluate all gender-based activities and "maintain only those that have clear and sound pedagogical purpose."

When a law professor wore a Black Lives Matter shirt to class earlier this year, she saw it as a teaching tool and exercise in academic freedom. Some of her “concerned students” saw the gesture as an attempt to push her “personal beliefs” on them, but also a threat to their ability to become practicing lawyers – and told her so in a much-derided memo. The incident was revived this month after Inside Higher Ed confirmed the institution was southern California’s Whittier Law School, whose student body is majority-minority, and the professor was Patricia Leary. However, in some states, schools don’t receive new books for 10...

Towson University is a public university located in Towson, Baltimore County, Maryland. Founded in 1866 as Maryland’s first training school for teachers, Towson still produces the most teachers of any university in the state. Hypeline reports, May 13, 2016, that it received information from a former Towson University “SGA member” that a student presentation, “The historical ties between homophobia in communities of color and colonization,” claimed...

Since the Supreme Court decision on marriage, the government has put many religious universities on the "shame list" if they seek waivers that allow them to teach traditional values of marriage and sexuality without being stripped of grants or funding. "It is sad to think how far things have come where religious institutions are now being targeted for disfavor from the government because of their views on marriage," religious liberty attorney Roger Severino said at the Heritage Foundation on April 13, 2016. Dr. Derek Halvorson, the President of Covenant College, on the panel with Severino, said "Christian colleges and universities...

George Mason University School of Law has just been renamed the Antonin Scalia School of Law in honor of the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia. Accompanying the name change was a receipt of a $30 million gift: $10 million from the Charles Koch Foundation and $20 million from an anonymous donor. The combination of the names of Scalia and Koch has led to a number of George Mason University faculty getting their panties in a bunch — and understandably so. Let's look at it. Justice Antonin Scalia had a reputation on the court and in his written opinions as...

Milwaukee Public Schools has included nearly a half million dollars for "Black Lives Matter" in its list of expenditures included the 2017 budget proposal it published in Wednesday's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Interestingly enough, the district plans to spend nearly as much on "Black Lives Matter" as it plans to spend on College Access Centers, Universal Driver Education, and Advanced Studies of World Languages. "We’re doing this work because national and local studies tell us young men of color in Wisconsin and Milwaukee are more likely to be represented disproportionally in the justice system and less likely to be represented proportionally...
  • From 1970s-Era Academic ‘High Theory’ to Transgender Bathrooms on Campus

One take-away from the transgender-bathroom wars is that the public ignores arcane academic theory at its peril. For two decades, a growing constellation of gender-studies, queer-studies, and women’s-studies departments have been beavering away at propositions that would strike many people outside academia as surprising — such as that biological sex and “gender” are mere ideological constructs imposed by a Eurocentric, heteronormative power structure. Even though skeptical journalists have regularly dived into the murky swamp of academic theory and returned bearing nuggets of impenetrable jargon and even stranger ideas, the public and most politicians have shrugged off such academic abominations, if...

But the state-funded University of Maryland had described its "Queer Beyond Repair" symposium as laying the groundwork for a total and complete revolution, away from "imperial rule and anti-blackness" to exploring "the psychic and material structures of liberal politics itself." It goes on: "This queerness insists on forms of reinvention, if not defiance, in excess of the states of decay we have inherited or the symptoms of disrepair we have learned to uncover. It asks us to be estranged from the present as is, even as we acknowledge the limit conditions set by our fear of or incuriosity about what...

Once again, America’s colleges will showcase an excess of liberals and radical progressives during their commencement ceremonies to speak to the nation’s top grads one last time before they enter the real world. Campus Reform took stock of this year’s line up (according to (US News’ top 100 schools) and assessed each speaker based on his political views, rating each one as either liberal, conservative, or apolitical. Any speaker who has, at one point or another, openly expressed support for a political party or platform was then placed in a corresponding category.[snip] Notably, not a single active conservative politician was...

Houston-The protest organizer at an Arabic Immersion Magnet School says it is ironic that the seventh largest school district in the U.S. is ignoring the Arabic culture’s “long and ongoing culture of enslavement” while stripping names off of schools of anyone connected with the Confederacy or slavery (and spending millions to do so). The leader of “Stop the Magnet,” Liz Theiss, also said she does not understand why the school would reroute school buses and parent pick-up routes where protesters were playing the Islamic Call To Prayer.

Liberals, stop being so defensive. That’s the message of Harvard law professor Mark Tushnet in a new post at Balkinization, titled “Abandoning Defensive Crouch Liberal Constitutionalism.” The problem, according to Tushnet, is that liberals have been too defensive when it comes to advancing their agenda in the courts. Tushnet blames what he calls the “culture wars” on conservatives, and he says liberals should now make conservatives pay. “The culture wars are over; they lost, we won,” he writes in italics. Tushnet claims that conservatives “had opportunities to reach a cease fire, but rejected them in favor of a scorched earth...
