Racism propelled Falwell's career Wednesday, May 30, 2007 3:55 AM In his May 17 Dispatch Forum column, "Rev. Falwell changed the face of politics," appraising the late minister's legacy, Cal Thomas disingenuously characterized the Rev. Jerry Falwell's 1965 sermon, "Ministers and marches," as a critique of religious political activism. The sermon was actually an expression of Falwell's white-supremacist ideology. Falwell was an outspoken segregationist. Racism, not "values," launched Falwell and the Christian Right into politics. In a 1958 sermon to his Lynchburg, Va., congregation, one of many decrying civil rights, Falwell said, "When God has drawn a line of distinction,...

US Source "Patriotism threatens free speech with death. It is infuriated by thoughtful hesitation, constructive criticism of our leaders and pleas for peace. It despises people of foreign birth. It has specifically blamed homosexuals, feminists and the American Civil Liberties Union. Whom are we calling terrorists here?" -- Barbara Kingsolver, novelist, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, September 27 Syrian Source "How can the U.S. claim itself to be the defender of justice, democracy and freedom and the staunch protector of...

There are two misconceptions held by many Americans. The first is that communism ceased to be a threat when the Soviet Union imploded. The second is that the New Left of the Sixties collapsed and disappeared as well. “The Sixties are dead,” wrote columnist George Will (Slamming the Doors, Newsweek, Mar. 25, 1991) Because the New Left lacked cohesion it fell apart as a political movement. However, its revolutionaries reorganized themselves into a multitude of single issue groups. Thus we now have for example, radical feminists, black extremists, anti-war ‘peace’ activists, animal rights groups, radical environmentalists, and ‘gay’ rights groups....

Many argue that communism will never be possible because of "human nature". The essence of this false argument is the belief that a communist society would consist of an all-powerful central government that would tell everybody what to do--and would therefore undermine the creative initiative of individuals and the search for happiness. • This argument is based on two false assumptions: (1) It assumes that a communist society will look like the former Soviet Union, or the current China, North Korea, etc (ie: corrupt police states with a feudal-style ruling class) (2) It assumes that people will only work in...

More than a dozen traumatized John Kerry supporters have sought and received therapy from a licensed Florida psychologist since their candidate lost to President Bush, the Boca Raton News learned Monday. Boca Raton trauma specialist Douglas Schooler said he has treated 15 clients and friends with “intense hypnotherapy” since the Democratic nominee conceded last Wednesday. “I had one friend tell me he’s never been so depressed and angry in his life,” Schooler said. “I observed patients threatening to leave the country or staring listlessly into space. They were emotionally paralyzed, shocked and devastated.”

We can't tell if this is parody or self-parody, though we suspect the latter--and in either case, it's hilarious. Late last week a new Web site, SorryEverybody.com, appeared on the scene. Here's its manifesto:Some of us--hopefully most of us--are trying to understand and appreciate the effect our recent election will have on you, the citizens of the rest of the world. As our so-called leaders redouble their efforts to screw you over, please remember that some of us--hopefully most of us--are truly, truly sorry. And we'll say we're sorry, even on the behalf of the ones who aren't.The site features...

Have you all noticed how modern Israeli history is increasingly resembling the Biblical story of the ten plagues, right out of the Book of Exodus? First, we had the Oslo team who supplied us with lots of Blood and the Deaths of the Firstborn. For Frogs, you need look no further than the photos on the front pages today of His Ugliness in Paris. The Lice are those tenured traitors at Israeli universities calling for boycotts of Israel. The evil Beasts are now running the Gaza Strip. Darkness has long covered Israel's entire media. Anyway, this week, the Locusts are...

Anti-American feeling was one of the reasons behind the shock departure of the former dean of Wellington's Anglican cathedral. Speaking from the United States, Douglas Sparks said Kiwi kids taunted his children for being Americans and told them they hoped Iraqis would kill American soldiers. "We realised six-year-old children don't come up with those kinds of statements on their own. They have to have heard it from some other adult or influential person in their lives. "My daughter came home from school and said, `I am so upset about what George Bush has done to my life'." Despite receiving an...

San Francisco in no mood for tolerance after Bush win Sun 7 November, 2004 14:13 By Andrea Orr SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The summer of love has given way to the autumn of fear in San Francisco, a liberal stronghold where residents bitterly disappointed by the Bush victory are in no mood to reach out and mend divisions. Rather, they are waving "United States of Canada" maps, redrawn to show Canada extending down to include California, New England and the other so-called "blue states" that voted decisively for Massachusetts Democratic Senator John Kerry in the U.S. presidential race. Some are...

<p>NEW YORK — A 25-year-old university worker from Georgia shot and killed himself at ground zero (search) Saturday morning, authorities said. The man, Andrew Veal (search), of Athens, Ga., was found atop the structure housing the 1 and 9 subway lines after a hotel worker spotted what he believed was somebody sleeping inside the site around 8 a.m., said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. The newspaper also said the man was a registered Democrat who opposed the war in Iraq. Coleman said he could not confirm Newsday's account. Police were investigating how Veal entered the former World Trade Center (search) site, which is protected by high fences and owned by the Port Authority. Veal worked in a computer lab at the University of Georgia and was planning to marry, friends said Saturday.</p>

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Vandals spray painted vulgar messages on the walls of the North Carolina Republican Party headquarters and left a burned effigy depicting President Bush and Sen. A police officer reported Friday that about 100 people wearing masks and gloves were walking down a street near the headquarters, authorities said. Area church target of vandals By CAROLYNN BRIGHT - IR Staff Writer - 11/03/04 Rev. B.G. Stumberg doesn't think that gay and lesbian marriages should be recognized by law and he emphasizes that, in a free country, it's his right to hold that belief. However, since he shared his opinions on CI-96 with the media recently, he's learned that not everyone agrees with that philosophy — and his parish at the Canyon Ferry Road Baptist Church paid the price for that. On Tuesday, Stumberg arrived at the church to find that vandals had spray-painted several phrases on the walls of...

Charlottesville, VA—America's "culture war" was on full display last night at the Joan Baez concert. Tickets to the concert were a present to my mother-in-law for her 69th birthday. My mother-in-law certainly fit the demographic of the audience, or as she described it, "All the old hippies are out tonight." Let's just say that by attending, my wife and I dropped the average age of the audience by several months. Sixty-three year old Baez came out on stage and asked how the audience felt about the election? Of course the audience groaned and moaned—after all, this IS a Joan Baez...

Police are planning to question the adult children of two prominent Democrats as early as today in the wide-ranging probe into who, early on election day, slashed the tires of 20 vans and cars rented by the Republican Party. The investigation has already led to the Tuesday arrest of Opel E. Simmons III, a veteran party activist from Virginia in town to work on John Kerry's presidential campaign. Simmons, 33, was released Thursday afternoon without being charged. Sources told us that police, who are being assisted by the FBI, plan to speak to Michael Pratt, son of former Acting Mayor...

Gwen Ifill leads a discussion about how the country can reunite after the hotly contested election. GWEN IFILL: Both President Bush and Senator Kerry appealed across party lines today for unity in the wake of another election that left the nation split in shades of blue and red. But in a year when gay marriage bans passed in 11 states, to what degree is the debate over values contributing to that split? For more on that, we turn to: Rick Warren, founding pastor of Saddleback Church in Lake Forest, California, and author of the best-selling book, "The Purpose Driven Life";...

Stan Stafford of North Park didn't want to risk any more trouble. So on Saturday, three days before the presidential election, he took down the big Bush/Cheney yard signs that had dominated his North Park front yard. It didn't matter. Vandals trashed his house sometime early yesterday morning, splashing red paint on his sidewalks, plants, garage and house. "Charles Manson did this," he said. Stafford, a diehard Republican who lives on the busy corner of Texas and Meade streets, has been the target of several attacks. This most recent one did the most damage, he said. He had hoped to...

What now? Hours after the election returns showed that a Bush win was inevitable, Rev. Al Sharpton told a reporter for the Black Press USA Network: "Let’s all head to the airport and get out of the country." The remark was supposedly delivered in a facetious tone, but Sharpton said he had serious concerns about a second Bush term. I think we are in for some serious times. He will appoint judges to the Supreme Court that I think will try to erode some of the gains we made under the Civil Rights Movement and he clearly will have economic policies that...

We wonder where people get the idea that Republicans are so mean and evil. Well the liberals start something like this and people start to believe it. They have now introduced the yellow star of liberalism campaign. Origins:The Jewish Badge The yellow star, inscribed with the word "Jude," has become a symbol of Nazi persecution. Its likeness abounds upon Holocaust literature and materials. But the Jewish badge was not instituted in 1933 when Hitler came to power. It was not instituted in 1935 when the Nuremberg Laws stripped Jews of their citizenship. It was still not implemented by Kristallnacht in...

In the biggest fight of his charmed life, John Kerry swung between bewilderment and anger when things didn't go his way on the campaign trial. "I can't believe I'm losing to this idiot," the Massachusetts Democrat sighed to a staffer when President Bush's poll numbers surged in April. "Why the f--- didn't he take it?" he wondered when Republican Sen. John McCain refused to be his running mate a half-dozen times. "It's a pack of f---ing lies, what they're saying about me," he shouted at an adviser as a group of Swift boat veterans stepped up attacks on his Vietnam...

. No, not from us liberals, but you can't alienate 6 billion people without serious repercussions, and much as you'd like to, you can't kill off 1.3 billion Muslims. More lethal terrorists are, as I write, being created. There will be a day of reckoning, probably sooner, rather than later. My regret, is not that you will suffer, but that the rest of us will. There will be a terror attack that will dwarf 9/11, both in terms of human loss and financial devastation. And the world will not only turn its back, it will take the opportunity to strike...

We'll pick a president Tuesday, and perhaps bring closure to an acrimonious year. But it's highly unlikely that either George W. Bush or John Kerry will be able to bridge the partisan divide and usher in a new era of civility. In pursuit of victory, both have uttered grand promises - Bush talks about overhauling the tax code and partially privatizing Social Security, while Kerry touts an ambitious health-care plan with a price tag in excess of $600 billion - but they have rarely leveled with the voters about a few fundamental truths: The bitter ideological conflicts that predate this...
