Waukesha - Ten 10-foot tall guitars, modeled after the Les Paul Gibson, arrived on a flatbed trailer - guarded by a mammoth fiberglass bulldog - Tuesday morning, a sure sign that the GuitarTown Project is for real. The Gibson Foundation and Mayor Jeff Scrima announced earlier this month that Waukesha had been selected for the project, following on the heels of cities such as Los Angeles, Nashville and London. In other GuitarTown Project cities, the guitars typically were decorated by artists, often signed by celebrities and auctioned off to raise money for charity. Later Tuesday, a Waukesha steering committee planned...

A GOOGLE homepage doodle posted last week honouring guitar legend Les Paul has cost the world $268 million, despite only setting the internet giant back a mere $15,000, Extreme Tech says. Extreme Tech says the amount covers 10.7 million man-hours in lost productivity, assuming the average Google user earns $25 an hour. "During the two days that the Les Paul doodle was online, those 740 million visitors, according to analytics from RescueTime, spent 26 seconds more on the Google home page than normal," it said. "740 million times 26 seconds is 5,344,444 hours - and over two days, that's a...

Google has replaced its homepage logo today with an interactive doodle commemorating the birthday of Les Paul, the father of the solid-body electric guitar. Paul's inventions shaped the sound of rock and roll. snip Google's Doodle today pays tribute to both sides of Paul's career. The site's logo has been turned into a playable guitar on which you can strum any song (as long as it's in C-Major), with your mouse or keyboard. There's also a recording device so you can share your masterpieces with others.

Federal agents from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and local police today seized wood, guitars, computers and boxes of files from Gibson Guitar's Massman Road manufacturing facility. Sources say the Nashville-based guitar manufacturer is being investigated for violating the Lacey Act, a key piece of environmental law, for importing endangered species of rosewood from Madagascar. Rosewood is widely used in the construction of guitars and sells for $5,000 per cubic meter, more than double the price of mahogany. The island nation off Africa's east coast is a key producer of the hardwood, the export of which has links to...

Two men, Les Paul and Bob Moog, stand above all others as creators of the musical environment in which our brains are all now marinated. Moog, who died in 2005, stepped into the nascent field of digital music and devised an interface that took pure sound synthesis across the bridge from engineers to practicing musicians. Paul, who died of pneumonia yesterday at the age of 94, is less recognized as a digital innovator. But maybe he should be. Underlying many of his incredible inventions was an abstract notion that demanded, almost as an afterthought, radical changes to the hardware of...

Les Paul has died at age 94. His electric guitar designs and innovations were central to the development of rock guitar artistry beginning in the early 1950s and continuing to this day. He was playing to the very end, too, in small groups in New York clubs. So long to a great one...

Paul was to miss his all-star 90th birthday celebration concert in Los Angeles...
