BENGHAZI, Libya — Sixteen days after the death of four Americans in an attack on a United States diplomatic mission here, fears about the near-total lack of security have kept F.B.I. agents from visiting the scene of the killings and forced them to try to piece together the complicated crime from Tripoli, more than 400 miles away. Investigators are so worried about the tenuous security, people involved in the investigation say, that they have been unwilling to risk taking some potential Libyan witnesses into the American Embassy in Tripoli. Instead, the investigators have resorted to the awkward solution of questioning...

URGENT: U.S. intelligence officials knew within 24 hours of the assault on the U.S. Consulate in Libya that it was a terrorist attack and suspected Al Qaeda-tied elements were involved, sources told Fox News -- though it took the administration a week to acknowledge it. The account conflicts with claims on the Sunday after the attack by U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice that the administration believed the strike was a "spontaneous" event triggered by protests in Egypt over an anti-Islam film. Two senior U.S. officials said the Obama administration internally labeled the attack terrorism from the first...

America’s news organizations did not spend much time reporting on the most recent Gallup poll (www.gallup.com/poll/157589/distrust-media-hits-new-high.aspx) that looked at how the public feels about them. That is understandable. After all, not many folks want to dwell on the fact that most of the world does not trust them. At least that’s what Gallup says about the state of the American journalism profession today. The survey determined six out of ten Americans (that’s 60 percent for those keeping score at home) have little or no trust in the media to do their jobs fully, accurately, and fairly. But this is nothing...

Stephen Hayes does the rundown, which can be summarized as follows:• Ambassador Susan Rice lied on five Sunday talk shows last week, saying that the attack that killed Ambassador Stevens was not "premeditated or preplanned". • Ambassador Susan Rice also lied about Stevens' security, stating that " two of the four Americans who were killed were there providing security." • White House Press Secretary Jay Carney lied that the attacks had nothing to do with the anniversary of 9/11. • Secretary of State Hillary Clinton lied as well, indicating that an anti-Islamic film was the cause of the non-existent protests...

As Ed already recounted, President Obama’s 60 Minutes interview that aired last night is causing a wee bit of headache for the White House — his comments about four American deaths in Libya being a “bump in the road” and about Israel’s concerns over Iran being just “noise,” as you might imagine, haven’t been playing over too well. The Romney campaign quickly seized on the remarks as insensitive and inappropriate, via WaPo: “His indication that developments in the Middle East represent bumps in the road is a very different view than I have,” the Republican candidate told ABC News. “I...

Yesterday on CBS' 60 Minutes, Barack Obama made a bold statement--one that voters need to think about long and hard before they cast their ballots: "Well, let's see what I've done since I came into office. I said I'd end the war in Iraq. I did. I said that we'd go after al Qaeda. They've been decimated in the Fatah. That we'd go after bin Laden. He's gone. So I've executed on my foreign policy. And it's one that the American people largely agree with. So if Gov. Romney is suggesting that we should start another war, he should say...

In most all things, I try to follow Hanlon’s (or Heinlein’s) Razor: “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.” This is particularly important to remember when looking at polls, Sometimes, however, one must wonder. As I pointed out yesterday, the result of Romney’s “really bad week” was that Romney had gone from 5 or 6 points behind in Gallup, to essentially tied. Even so, a number of people have noted that there are some odd assumptions in that poll, and others. Pat Caddell and Doug Schoen talked about it recently. Asked if the polls were, in...

Americans' distrust in the media hit a new high this year, with 60% saying they have little or no trust in the mass media to report the news fully, accurately, and fairly. Distrust is up from the past few years, when Americans were already more negative about the media than they had been in years prior to 2004. The record distrust in the media, based on a survey conducted Sept. 6-9, 2012, also means that negativity toward the media is at an all-time high for a presidential election year. This reflects the continuation of a pattern in which negativity increases...

It is a measure of how skewed the reporting is and how intellectually inconsistent is most of the “analysis” from the mainstream media that while Mitt Romney’s comment on the embassy attacks held the attention of the press for days (when in fact he had correctly surmised that the administration was trying to make excuses for the embassy attack by expressing regret over an anti-Muslim video)), there has been comparatively little concern with a much more critical story: Did the Obama team intentionally lie to voters (or just shoot first and aim later) for a week about what it knew,...

Barack Obama and his minions are so used to controlling the press that they seem to think they can get away with anything. Thus, the eruption of anti-American riots from Morocco to Pakistan, beginning on September 11, is chalked up to a spontaneous eruption of entirely understandable Muslim distress over an otherwise-unknown YouTube video. Never mind the RPGs and machine guns. And when an American ambassador is murdered and dragged through the streets of Benghazi by a howling mob, not to worry: there was no negligence in failing to provide security; the ambassador, Chris Stevens, died essentially by accident from...

You work hard, stretch every penny, but chances are you pay a higher tax rate than him: Mitt Romney made $20 million dollars in 2010, but paid only 14% in taxes—probably less than you. Now he has a plan that will give millionaires another tax break and raises taxes on middle class families by up to $2000 dollars a year. Mitt Romney's middle class tax increase: he pays less, you pay more.

Last year, Mrs. Clinton was inspired by the revolution in Libya and praised the rebels for "taking back their country." This year, when US Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens' murdered corpse was desecrated in a manner reminiscent of how rebels treated the body of "we came, we saw, he died" Muammar Gaddafi,....Hillary Clinton seemed shocked and confused. Hillary Clinton, who must have been asking herself...."How can this happen" question when Bill was caught with his pants down in the Oval Office, responded to the crisis by asking "How can this happen in a country we help liberate, in a city...we...

A longtime professor and one-time dean of the University of Chicago Law School told The Daily Caller that Barack Obama was never offered tenure, despite the assertions of a New York Times reporter who covers the president and the first family. “Other faculty members dreamed of tenured positions; [Obama] turned them down,” wrote Times White House Correspondent Jodi Kantor, author of “The Obamas,” in a July 30, 2008 profile of the president’s twelve years as a lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School. And yet, according to longtime University of Chicago law professor Richard Epstein, Obama was never actually...

Please pass along this clip as a means to shut up a blatantly false claim by the Obama campaign that Mitt Romney is going to remove preexisting conditions from his health care plan. He CLEARLY STATED on Sunday's Meet The Press that he WILL NOT remove the preexisting conditions from his reformed version of health care. I know we have major issues with Mitt and Romneycare but the Obama campaign is doing a huge viral attack today about this with images and Ezra Klein's piece in the WaPo. www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/wp/2012/09/10/who-would-be-left-out-of-romneys-preexisting-conditions-plan-about-89-million-americans/ Here is the image they are using in their viral campaign...

“For more than 200 years, our party has led the fight for civil rights, health care, Social Security, workers’ rights, and women’s rights.” — from a history of the Democratic Party, on DNC Web site. A number of readers asked about this brief (20 paragraphs or so) history of the Democratic party, especially the first sentence. It certainly appears to ignore the party’s long and troubled history with race, literally leaping from the “200 years” phrase to 1920, when the women’s suffrage amendment was enacted. The Web history mentions the leadership of President Woodrow Wilson in helping pass the 19th...

First Lady Michelle Obama’s pitch to voters last night relied on the premise that she and her husband understand what it is to struggle to make ends meet. She spoke movingly about their early years--about how a young Barack Obama drove a car that was “rusted out" and found his furniture “in a dumpster,” how they both came from families that had to “scrape by.” Her fairy tale--however well-delivered--was one great, big, colorful lie. Both Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama began their adult lives with a leg up on the rest of America. They attended elite schools: Michelle went to...
