The number of drug tests administered to University of Texas football players has skyrocketed under first-year coach Charlie Strong, according to university data obtained by the American-Statesman through an open records request. According to university records, an average of 104 tests were administered annually to football players from 2010 to 2013, the last four years under former coach Mack Brown. A total of 188 tests were administered the first eight months this year under Strong. At an annualized rate, that’s more than double the previous four years.

FORT WORTH — Authorities are not allowing longhorns with the Fort Worth Herd to roam on the new Chisholm Trail Parkway during a weekend of festivities to open the tollway. Seems the North Texas Tollway Authority has decided the road is for cars, not cattle. The 28-mile toll road, named after the historical cattle trails that led to Oklahoma, Kansas and beyond in the mid-1800s, is scheduled to open to traffic Sunday. It will connect Interstate 30 near downtown Fort Worth to U.S. 67 in Cleburne. Crews will open one on- and off-ramp at a time beginning about 8 a.m....

Former NFL and star college quarterback Vince Young has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection only years after signing a massive contract. Mr Young’s reckless spending habits have him running for cover from debt collectors despite making millions during his pro career. The filing was made last week in Houston as two lawsuits seeking more than $2million from the ex-Tennessee Titan were ruled in favor of the plaintiffs.

Darrell K Royal, who coached the Longhorns to three national titles and became the biggest college football icon in a state that worships the sport, has died at age 88. On the field, Royal was known for his play-calling genius, taking the biggest of risks in the biggest of games and coming out a winner more often than not. Off the field, he rose from humble beginnings during the depths of the Depression to become a homespun populist rivaling Will Rogers. Royal was the winningest coach in University of Texas history, compiling a 167-47-5 record in 20 seasons from 1957...

The Longhorns have clinched the Big 12 South and will face off against Nebraska on December 5th. But first the Longhorns have to contend with their rival Texas A&M. The Longhorns are ranked 3rd in the BCS standings but the Aggies offense is ranked number 7 in the nation and could prove to be a challenge. After all, this is a game of rivalry and pride, ingredients that often fuel an upset, and the last thing the Longhorns need is a repeat upset of 2007. An upset is exactly what the Aggies are looking for.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Vince Young connected in the clutch and won it for Texas with his arm, more than his legs - just like a star quarterback is supposed to. Young, best known for his highlight-reel runs, threw a 24-yard go-ahead touchdown to Limas Sweed with 2:37 left and No. 2 Texas defeated No. 4 Ohio State 25-22 Saturday night in the much-anticipated first meeting between two of college football's most storied programs. Young's floating TD pass over a defender capped a 72-yard drive during which his biggest plays were through the air, including a third-and-6 completion of 9...

Cowboys, wannabes set out on 650-mile trail ride BY T.A. BADGER Associated Press Writer BANDERA, Texas - Dozens of cowboys and wannabes hitched up their horses and wagons in this Hill Country town on Monday and pointed them north along a historic route used by 19th-century cattle drovers to get their beef to market. The hardy travelers plan to take seven weeks to cover the 650 miles from Bandera, the self-proclaimed Cowboy Capital of the World, to the famed Wild West outpost of Dodge City, Kan. The ride will follow what was known as the Western Trail, along which millions...

Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle {snip} Unexcused absence Stoops came to mind Sunday in the wake of how the Texas Longhorns dealt with their loss to Cal State Fullerton in the College World Series. They disgraced themselves. They disgraced their school. What a nice finishing touch to a splendid season. Instead of winning their second national championship in three seasons, the Longhorns became the first team in at least 17 years to refuse to participate in the College World Series trophy presentation. Aren't they splendid ambassadors for the University of Texas? Let's be clear about who we're blaming here. The Texas...
