GENEVA (Reuters) - George Clooney has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama by headlining an exclusive event for Americans in Geneva, one of the world's most affluent cities. The Hollywood actor and director, fresh from the world premiere of the Coen brothers' comedy "Burn After Reading" in Venice, slipped without fanfare into the Swiss city on Tuesday for his first appearance on behalf of the Democratic nominee. Some 170 contributors have paid $1,000 a head to attend a cocktail party with Clooney at a museum in Geneva's Old Town on Tuesday evening. And 75...

Since the 1960s, bigotry has undergone an aesthetic makeover. Today, the most pernicious racists do not wear pointy hoods, scream epithets and anonymously burn crosses from behind masks. They don starched suits, recite sententious bromides and stage political lynchings before television cameras. For proof, behold the mob stalking Barack Obama's former pastor, Jeremiah Wright. Wright has long delivered fiery (and occasionally outrageous) sermons, to little fanfare. Now, though, a gang of thugs is inflicting a guilt-by-association blow to Obama by excoriating his spiritual adviser for three specific declarations. Sean Hannity, Fox News' own George Wallace, turned a fire hose on...

The only reason anyone would watch tonight’s Democratic presidential debate from Charleston is to see what kind of antics crazy old “Mad Mike” Gravel will pull. Let’s be honest, the guy not only makes us feel good about being Republican, but he makes us feel good about not being senile. High five! So, because the debate is sponsored by YouTube - and because YouTube is the only reason we can even pick Gravel out of a lineup - we decided to count down his five best YouTube moments. We wanted to do 10, but then we got bored and moved...

Republican presidential candidate, Rep. Ron Paul, said the country is in "great danger" of the U.S. government staging a terrorist attack or a Gulf of Tonkin style provocation, as the war in Iraq continues to deteriorate. The Texas congressman offered no specifics nor mentioned President Bush by name, but he clearly insinuated that the administration would not be above staging an incident to revive flagging support. During the radio interview, Paul said the government was conducting "an orchestrated effort to blame the Iranians for everything that has gone wrong in Iraq."

Americans' confidence in Congress is at a historic low point, according to results of a Gallup poll released Thursday. Only 14 percent of Americans surveyed said they had a "great deal" or "quite a lot" of confidence in Congress. That is the lowest confidence level recorded in the history of Gallup polling on that institution, going back to 1973. The previous low was 18 percent in 1991, 1993 and 1994. Those happen to be the last years before the present that the Democrats controlled both chambers – and in 1991 there was also a Republican named George Bush in the...

AUSTIN, Texas -- Musician Ted Nugent is getting mixed reviews for his performance at the second inauguration of Republican Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Nugent appeared on stage at the black-tie gala Tuesday in a cutoff T-shirt with a Confederate flag on it. He used machine guns as props and shouted offensive remarks about non-English speakers, according to people at the event. Perry's spokesman, Robert Black, said Nugent is a good friend of the governor's. He said Perry did not put any stipulation on what Nugent would play. GOP strategist Royal Masset said Nugent was "a horrible choice." Gary Bledsoe, president...

Hollywood superstar George Clooney is in mourning after his pet pig died at the age of 18. The Syriana actor lived with his beloved Max in his Hollywood home - and the pair even slept together in the same bed when Clooney was without a female companion. Clooney says, "He was as old a pig as the vets had ever seen. I was really sad, because he's been a big part of my life. It has been a bad year for my pets, I had a bulldog that died this year too. It's strange how animals become a bit part...

Call any Tech Support line, or your bank for that matter. Do you get a fellow American on the other end? Or do you get someone in India that can't help you and just gives you the run around because they don't know any better (which doesn't matter because you can't understand them anyway!). This is not only happening in the Call Center field, but in Technology, Animation and other Media and so forth. This takes away millions of jobs from Americans and at the same time, we have millions of people coming from India who are getting grants to...

CASTLEGAR, British Columbia (Reuters) - George McGovern, who ran for the U.S. presidency on an anti-Vietnam War platform, said on Saturday history will show Canada was right to have sheltered that era's war resisters. McGovern, who was in Canada to speak to a reunion of Vietnam War draft dodgers, said the Iraq war was also "needless and mistaken," but he said it would be presumptuous of him to say Canada should again provide haven for U.S. deserters. "I always appreciated the generosity and imagination of Canada... I think history will be on the side of the Canadians," McGovern, 83, said,...

Republicans prevented more than 350,000 voters in Ohio from casting ballots or having their votes counted -- enough to have put John Kerry in the White House. Like many Americans, I spent the evening of the 2004 election watching the returns on television and wondering how the exit polls, which predicted an overwhelming victory for John Kerry, had gotten it so wrong. By midnight, the official tallies showed a decisive lead for George Bush -- and the next day, lacking enough legal evidence to contest the results, Kerry conceded. Republicans derided anyone who expressed doubts about Bush's victory as nut...

If the current trend continues, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is going to end up being involved in the journalistic equivalent of the Bay of Pigs. His article in the latest issue of Rolling Stone Republicans stole the 2004 election in Ohio is coming under a massive assault - and from the unlikeliest of places. Monday in Salon, Farhad Manjoo reduced RFK, Jr.'s seemingly authoritative argument to rubble. Democratic pollster Mark Blumenthal followed suit later the same day by taking down Kennedy's claim that exit polling is an "exact science" and highlighting how he either misinterpreted or willfully distorted numerous aspects...

In recent months, ABC reporter Bill Blakemore has been a passionate proponent for getting all that harmful objectivity and balance out of reporting on the impending disaster of global warming. So it shouldn't be surprising -- it should flow naturally, like a melting glacier -- that Blakemore is using ABC's World Newser blog to plug Al Gore's new documentary "An Inconvenient Truth." The filmmakers could use Blakemore's review here as a promotional blurb. He calls it "96 minutes well spent," says "Regardless of your politics, it's riveting and informative," not to mention "remarkably clear, concise, and informative."

On January 4, FNC's Special Report with Brit Hume aired a segment that discussed Hollywood’s portrayal of terrorism. The story, airing at 6:38PM, featured a quote from George Clooney, star and producer of "Syriana." The clip appeared to be from the movie’s press junket. Fox News reporter William La Jeunesse stated that "'Syriana' is based on the true story of a CIA operative sent to assassinate Saddam Hussein." He adds: "But in the hands of actor/producer George Clooney, the story changes Saddam into an benevolent Arab prince. And Hezbollah saves the agent's life. Americans are shown to be greedy and corrupt,...

SHOCK ALERT.. Hollywood still wonders why the mounting loses at the box-office, and the un-esteem the public holds for the intolerant, hate monger actor class, the Hollywood liberal wing nuts will once again throw the game during the this years Academy Awards presentation.. As if we don't expect it, the left-wing biases will end up tilting the decisions as to which loony leftist will win all the apples.. George Clooney continues to carry the water for them against the war and Bush, using their leaky political bucket of worms.. Promised to do some trainblogging and am catching up on a deluge of e-mail. Several readers sent this disturbing story yesterday of a Brigham Young University professor named Steven Jones who believes that 9/11 was an inside job and that bombs, not the Islamist hijackers, are to blame for obliterating the Twin Towers and all of the innocent people inside them. "It is quite plausible that explosives were pre-planted in all three buildings and set off after the two plane crashes — which were actually a diversion tactic," he writes. "Muslims are (probably) not to blame for bringing down the...

I am all for whaling, but against killing the wolves. In Norway we have a very small population of wolves. More sheeps die from falling down cliffs and other natural things than being killed by wolves. Actually more sheeps are killed by another wild animal. Whales on the other hand there are many of in the sea.

Former Vice President Al Gore yesterday painted the Bush administration as filled with rigid ideologues who ignore facts in order to adhere to their policies, as he sought to invigorate the Democratic base for presidential candidate Sen. John Kerry. "In every way, John Kerry and John Edwards represent an approach to government that is the opposite of the Bush-Cheney approach," Mr. Gore said in a 90-minute speech yesterday at Georgetown University — sponsored by the political arm of the liberal group Moveon.org. [snip]But David Winston, a Republican analyst, said the characterization of Mr. Bush as a rigid right-wing ideologue...

Letter: Time to compromise We cannot achieve 100 percent safety from those who seek to destroy us. A half -ton of garden fertilizer with suitable additives fitted into the trunk of a car would blow a hole the size of a bus through the pavement down into the subway lines below and up to the buildings above. The reason we've not been victim of such an attack is our enemy's probable lack of funds. All the money in the U.S. Treasury cannot prevent such an eventual, inevitable tragedy despite the costly efforts of our Homeland Security. Remember, many great empires...

KABUL, Afghanistan, July 10 - Journalists remember him as Jack, an eccentric, heavily armed and at times, it seemed, dangerously unbalanced, middle-aged former American Special Forces soldier, who appeared in Afghanistan in the fall of 2001. Surrounded by armed Afghan guards and rumors that he worked for the Central Intelligence Agency, he quickly rose to prominence. In the next two years, he was interviewed by Fox and CBS News, helped write a book called "The Hunt for bin Laden" and said he had discovered evidence in Afghanistan that linked Iraq to Al Qaeda. This week, Jack, a convicted felon...

A primary defeat two years ago won’t keep Cynthia McKinney out of politics. The former U.S. Congresswoman appears to be making another run for the 4th District, despite a loss in 2002 to Denise Majette. While neither McKinney nor her campaign manager were available to confirm the campaign this week, the McKinney camp has a new Web site up for 2004. At www.cynthiaforcongress.com, the Atlanta woman’s biography describes McKinney as “the voice for the voiceless.” It attributes her loss to Majette to Republican crossover voting. “We have launched this campaign because we have a vision that America can be better...

Islamabad, Dec 16 - A Pakistani newspaper on Tuesday published a report, claiming a meeting had taken place between US President George Bush and former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein on November 27. The Urdu language newspaper, Khabrain, quoting some reports said that during his unexpected sojourn to Baghdad, Bush met deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein on November 27. The daily further said that Saddam had tried to commit suicide on November 23, while he was arrested with the help of Kurd leader Jalal Talabani and his own guards, three days before the attempt to kill himself. The local press, like...

HAMBURG, Germany (AFP) - Hollywood actor George Clooney (news) says American society is too prudish -- one of the reasons why he would not follow his fellow actor Arnold Schwarzenegger (news) into politics, he said in a published German magazine interview. He told Woman magazine that Schwarzenegger's win this month in the California governorship race showed that candidates could only be successful in American politics if they denied things they did in earlier life. "You read in the media that (Schwarzenegger) was already gushing about wanting to become governor of California 25 years ago -- today he denies that," he...

An American friend of mine visiting from South America walked away from one of last month's parties around the L.A. Times Books Festival rather shaken and bewildered. "I felt like I was in a loony bin," he said as we emerged from a chic book-launch party in the Hollywood Hills. "If one more crazy person came up to me with some crackpot theory, I swear I would have thrown him off the balcony," he said. I know what he meant. With the 2004 presidential campaign now under way, it seems clear that as whacked out as George W. Bush may...

HOLLYWOOD; FREE SPEECH ONLY GOES ONE WAY MARK A SITY 2/9/03 I was quite amused to read George cLooney's caustic remarks toward criticism of his most recent movie, which seems to have been a flop. Someone told him that the movie was "boring". On one level this could be viewed as constructive criticism, explaining why this movie flopped. However, this is not how Mr. Looney saw the remark. His response was, "You crack me up, man. You just wanted to get up and be a rat, you know that? You just wanted to get up and say something rotten. What...
