A World Without Limbaugh

I hate to say this out loud. Upon hearing Rush Limbaugh was in the hospital and his condition serious, I felt a nervous twinge in my stomach. Dare I say it, I thought, “Oh my gosh, what if Rush was gone”. I could not help but think of the shocking passing of Michael Jackson. The next morning, I timidly turned on my TV. “Praise God!”, Rush is resting comfortably. I had the same fearful feeling in my stomach once before years ago. My wife passed out after dinner as we were leaving a restaurant. She awoke and was fine. During...

A New Breed of Fundamentalist

I was an associate pastor in New York City in the early 1980’s, and one of the other pastors had been a member of the motorcycle gang called the Pagans. They are a large and notorious gang that has a record of violence and drugs. This man, named Tom, began to date a backslidden Christian and led her into a sinful lifestyle. The girlfriend’s mother was a strong believer, and God had burdened her heart not only for her daughter, but for this man Tom. One day, led by the Spirit, this little woman marched right into the Pagan’s clubhouse...

The Eventual, Perfect Gift

It was a simple question, posed to us in the Highlands Writers Group. “What was the best Christmas gift you ever received?” That question made me think deeply. I discovered that gifts change as years pass. I don’t mean the obvious, that you get different gifts in different years. I mean that the gifts you did get, even long, long ago, change with time. I was six in 1949, when the first Christmas I clearly remember, came around. We lived at 205 W. College Avenue, in Salisbury, Maryland. On the Eastern Shore, Salisbury was, and mostly still is, a sleepy...

Vermont court eyes value of love of man's best friend (How much is a dog's love worth?)

MONTPELIER, Vt. — Vermont's highest court is being asked to decide what a dog's love is worth. The state Supreme Court on Thursday was to hear a case that began in July 2003, when Denis and Sarah Scheele, who were visiting relatives, let their mixed-breed dog wander into Lewis Dustin's yard and he fatally shot it. Now the Scheeles are asking the court to carve out a new legal doctrine that a dog's owners can sue for emotional distress and loss of companionship, just like parents can when they lose children. "We're still working toward having the courts recognizing the...

They eloped in a dump truck later that year. After 59 years of marriage, James and Lolie Brackin died Saturday morning only moments apart. “They say when you die, you’re immediately in the presence of Jesus,” said their youngest daughter, Dana Troublefield. “I think she got up there and said, ‘Where’s my husband?’ And Jesus said, ‘Just a minute.
Romantic Rivalries Stir Religious Feelings

Rivals on the dating scene could make one feel closer to God, according to new research that suggests one's religiousness may be more closely related to mating strategies than previously known. In experiments with 269 college students, researchers found that both men and women apparently felt more religious when they saw attractive potential competitors. Social psychologists had volunteers view dating profiles of either attractive men or women and told them these were fellow students participating at an online dating site. They were then asked to rate, on a 10-point scale, the extent to which they agreed with statements like, "I...

Israeli Scientist Finds 'Love Hormone' Also Triggers Jealousy

(IsraelNN.com) A researcher at the University of Haifa has discovered that the hormone oxytocin, also known as the "love hormone," can trigger negative emotions such as jealousy as well. Oxytocin is released naturally in the body during childbirth, lactation and when engaging in intimate relations. Participants in a previous experiment who inhaled a synthetic form of the hormone displayed higher levels of altruistic feelings. However, it was also discovered in earlier studies on rodents that the hormone may be linked to higher levels of aggression as well.

MICHAEL HANLON 27th October 2009 [Pic in URL] United in what appears to be deep and profound grief, a phalanx of more than a dozen chimpanzees stood in silence watching from behind the wire of their enclosure as the body of one of their own was wheeled past.
