NOT a joke... Yesterday Senator Susan Collins (R-Maine) described an event she hosted: served at a working lunch with Obama on Capitol Hill, the menu came from her home state's University of Maine, inc. a recipe for healthy lobster salad/blueberry pie/etc that Collins pointed-out fit Moochelle's healthy food initiative guidelines- alas, Obama could only look 'longingly' at it, as he didn't have a 'taster' present. She pointed-out directly to him that all present in the room were 'tasters', and if it was poisoned or something they'd have all already 'keeled over'... yet -after stating 'you have better food than the Democrats...

The Obama administration proposed regulations Friday that would prohibit U.S. schools from selling unhealthy snacks. The 160-page regulation from the Department of Agriculture (USDA) would enact nutrition standards for "competitive" foods not included in the official school meal. In practice, the proposed rules would replace traditional potato chips with baked versions and candy with granola. Regular soda is out, though high-schoolers may have access to diet versions. "Although nutrition standards for foods sold at school alone may not be a determining factor in children's overall diets, they are critical to providing children with healthy food options throughout the entire school...

The ceremonial lunch President Obama and his former congressional colleagues are eating Monday tops out at 3,000 calories, according to a website that has tallied up the luxurious menu of lobster, bison and apple pie. HealthyFoodRecipe.net posted the full menu, complete with its calorie count, and said it was “unsatisfactory” to see such an unhealthy spread, given first lady Michelle Obama’s push for healthier eating. She has come under fire for the high-calorie counts of some of the state dinners she’s hosted at the White House, but other nutritionists have given her a pass, saying indulging on special occasions is...

I’m pretty critical of Senator John Hoeven at times, but he deserves credit for going to bat against federal overreach on school lunches. New federal guidelines that, among others things, limited calories in school lunches rankled parents and school administrators across the nation. It was a one-size-fits-all policy for a nation full of students who have very different nutritional needs. Now, thanks to the work of Senator Hoeven (who teamed up with Arkansas Democrat Mark Pryor), the calorie restriction is no more, though just for the 2012-2013 school year. So it’s a temporary reprieve, for now. From a press release sent...

... Obama is having Mitt Romney over for lunch on Thursday and their meeting is already generating a lot of buzz. Here are five theories about the White House’s motives.... 1. Obama is extending a common courtesy... 2. Obama will offer Romney a Cabinet job... 3. Obama will enlist Romney in the fiscal cliff debate... 4. Obama wants Romney’s advice on business issues... 5. Obama wants closure on the 2012 presidential election, or something else?....

Politico is peddling a misleading liberal-media attack on Dick Morris. Item from Politico's "Morning Score" today [emphasis added]: "DICK MORRIS, who has not been taken seriously by serious people for a very long time, confessed on Fox News yesterday that he deliberately misled viewers: 'I think that there was a period of time when the Romney campaign was falling apart, people were not optimistic, nobody thought there was a chance of victory and I felt that it was my duty at that point to go out and say what I said.' There's just one problem. As Professor William Jacobson has...

... The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which required public schools to follow new nutritional guidelines this academic year to receive extra federal lunch aid, has created a nationwide version of the age-old parental challenge: persuading children to eat what is good for them. Because the lunches must now include fruits and vegetables, those who clamor for more cheese-laden nachos may find string beans and a peach cup instead. Because of limits on fat and sodium, some of those who crave French fries get baked sweet-potato wedges. Because of calorie restrictions, meat and carbohydrate portions are smaller. Gone is...

In a taste test of new lunch items last year in the Long Beach Unified School District, the fiesta salad received a nearly 73 percent approval rating. One student even declared that the dish of pinto beans, cilantro, corn, tomatoes and cayenne pepper was "better than McDonald's." Yet the salad was a flop when the district put it on the menu this year. A recent statewide survey shows that although students overwhelmingly support the new nutrition standards, most are tossing the foods they don't like. About 40 percent of students say they eat school lunches in their entirety. But what...

BURLINGTON, VT - A new school lunch report card gives Burlington schools a D+ plus for failing to offer students enough vegetarian and vegan choices. Burlington is the only Vermont school district included in a nationwide sampling conducted by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. In general the group says school lunches are getting healthier, in part due to new federal regulations. But the district loses points for only offering vegetarian entrees twice a week, offering no vegan entrees at all and also for not educating kids about the health benefits of a plant-based diet.

New School Meal Rules Trigger Protests, BoycottsBy Nirvi Shah on October 15, 2012 9:32 AM **SNIP** Among the most popular protests is one from students at the very small Wallace County High in Sharon Springs, Kansas. Students created a parody of "We Are Young," by Fun. In "We Are Hungry," they bemoan the calorie limits set by the new regulations—a maximum of 850 calories for high school lunches. (Since first posting the song last month, the students have added a message acknowledging that they are excited about the opportunity to eat more fruits and vegetables, but insisting that the meals...

La Joya school district officials have added new controls for the district’s free lunch program they say should help pass a state audit later this year. The district is in danger of losing federal funding for up to five years for the program after successive state reviews showed it was distributing an excessive number of free lunches. The Monitor reported in September the district is currently paying about $1.5 million out-of-pocket each month for its free breakfasts and lunches for low-income students. More than 90 percent of students at La Joya campuses rely on the program for free breakfasts and...

Students boycotting school lunchesPublished: Oct. 6, 2012 at 4:46 PM NEW YORK, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Many U.S. high school students are protesting new, healthier school lunches, and a professor says it may take a while for students to accept healthier food. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 required public schools to follow new nutritional guidelines this academic year, providing fruits and vegetables and limiting fat, sodium, and calories, The New York Times reported Friday. "Before, there was no taste and no flavor," said Malik Barrows, a senior at Automotive High School in Brooklyn. "Now there's no taste, no...

A Florida school district is considering a plan to install surveillance cameras on cafeteria trash cans to monitor what kids are throwing away – after they discovered that students were tossing out their federally-mandated fruit and vegetables. The Lake County School Board said more than $75,000 worth of vegetables have been thrown in the garbage. The veggies and fresh fruit are party of the Obama administration’s policy to force schools to provide healthy produce in lunch rooms.

Kansas Republican Tim Huelskamp issued a challenge to the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Tuesday: Adopt the same calorie restrictions and menu standards in the department’s cafeterias as the USDA now requires in the nation’s public schools. While students pick at their vegetables, USDA’s cafeteria menus are loaded with unhealthy options for government employees — from pesto chicken pizza to BLTs with cheddar cheese, Cuban pork paninis to Philly steak subs, cheeseburgers to French toast. N.J. High School Students Planning Cafeteria Boycott To Protest Obama Guidelines Parsippany Hills Students Ask, Why Should We Pay For The Obese's Problems? Students at Parsippany Hills High School held a strategy session on Thursday to discuss a potential lunch strike, on Friday, over what they have called inadequately sized meals. “This year you’re eating lunch and you’re like ‘Did I even eat?’ You’re not even full,” senior Brandon Faris told CBS 2′s Derricke Dennis. New federal guidelines stemming from first lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign have resulted in limits on protein and bread, and an increase in vegetables...

It would be laughable -- if our school kids weren't hungry! By now, most everyone who pays attention, is aware of how our government, Big Nanny, has screwed-up school lunches so badly that our kids either won't eat the stuff or, they DO eat it and -- remain hungry. This is just more evidence of what happens when the government takes an active hand in "helping" Americans. Once again, I repeat my plea to the UIS government: "For God's sake -- stop helping us!" ABC News reports the following: "School lunch trays are a bit lighter this year after Congress-approved...

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The controversy over Chick-Fil-A may now have impacted the Dallas Police Department. CBS 11 has learned a Dallas Police Sergeant brought a sandwich from the embattled restaurant chain to work with him last Wednesday, August 1, a day known around the country as Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day. When the Sergeant arrived at his post at the Southeast patrol, words were exchanged between himself and two female officers. And while it is unclear who started the argument, police have launched an investigation into the matter. A department spokesperson says the issue is not whether the sergeant brought the sandwich...

The Chicago Public School system has removed 12 principals and assistant principals for allegedly falsifying free and reduced lunch forms for their own children, according to a report from the Office of the Inspector General and CPS. None of the 12 assistant principals or principals have been charged with a crime, but have been removed from their posts pending due process hearings. Their names have been withheld during the hearing process. The program costs about $100 million per year and is meant to provide nutritious meals to needy children. “The investigation by the OIG has uncovered continuing fraud in this...

Don't spend that unemployment check too fast. The government might ask you to pay it back. Overpayments are a rampant problem in the unemployment insurance system. The federal government and states overpaid an estimated $14 billion in benefits in fiscal 2011, or roughly 11% of all the jobless benefits paid out, according to reports from the U.S. Labor Department. Of the states, Indiana was the worst offender, making more improper payments than it did correct ones. Now, the U.S. Department of Labor and the states are in the midst of a massive effort to try to recoup some of their...

Michelle Obama's campaign to transform school foodguidelines is not your typical first lady literacy or "just say no to drugs" project. No, hers is an all-out insidious plan to use food, a basic biological need and foundation of the mother-child relationship, to nudge parents out of the way at the ground level. The first lady's deceptive initiative has closely followed the Center for American Progress' policies set out in their 2008 report Change for America: A Progressive Blueprint for the 44 th President. Led by John Podesta and funded by George Soros, CAP began working on the plan for President Obama's...

North Carolina officials have said there was a misunderstanding when a preschooler’s homemade lunch was sent home for not meeting certain nutritional requirements, but now a second mother from the same school has come forward exclusively to The Blaze to say the same thing happened to her daughter. Diane Zambrano says her 4-year-old daughter, Jazlyn, is in the same West Hoke Elementary School class as the little girl whose lunch gained national attention earlier this week. When Zambrano picked Jazlyn up from school late last month, she was told by Jazlyn’s teacher that the lunch she had packed that day...

The nanny state tramples on parental prerogatives over kids 'diets' stories are irresistible blog fodder, arguably even tastier than the legendary 'dubious taser use by police' viral vids. Remember last year when a Chicago school flatly forbade kids from bringing in homepacked lunches? A school in North Carolina has a different approach: You can bring the lunch mom packed for you, but if it doesn’t meet the USDA guidelines, you’ll be marched to the cafeteria to eat a “healthy” lunch instead — and mom will be billed for the extra expense. The punchline? Mom’s lunch actually did meet the guidelines...

School lunches are about to get much healthier. First Lady Michelle Obama announced today that soon the meals will have less sodium, and will include more whole grains and more fruits and vegetables as sides. The new rules, which will go into effect in the 2012-2013 school year, will also allow schools to serve tofu and other soyfoods and soymilk to children who regularly consume them at home. Obama said that children who are on a sugar high or have a tummy filled with high-sodium, greasy food have difficulty focusing on their schoolwork. "As parents, we try to prepare decent...

A free meal at school for breakfast, lunch — and dinner? EDINBURGH, Scotland - Police in Scotland have distributed a 45-page document to catering firms seeking to serve beat officers describing the desired contents of their lunches. Lothian and Borders Police created the 10,000-word document in October to spell out the precise requirements for the sandwiches, chips and bottled water served to officers working the beat at Edinburgh soccer games, The Daily Telegraph reported Thursday. The police, who have a budget of some $109,400 to spend on 7,500 packed lunches per year, said the sandwiches must be served on 11-inch baguettes, 75 percent of which must be on white bread and...

To the age-old childhood lament that the pizza at school is grease-laden, the cheese like rubber and the insides of the quesadilla like something eaten yesterday and regurgitated, add a new and more serious concern: School meal programs are larded with middle-income families that are, in Wisconsin alone, siphoning untold tens of millions of dollars away from ever-larger federal appropriations meant to help impoverished families. The practice is so common and ingrained that scores of middle-class families — when granted anonymity — have admitted during interviews that their children are being fed through government nutrition programs designed to help their less...
