  • The Political-Messaging Huckster Behind Roger Goodell's Awful Presser (Frank Luntz)

Roger Goodell was talking, but the words weren't his alone. "That speech was all Frank," says an associate of pollster Frank Luntz, lord of the dark arts of political messaging, who frequently works with Goodell and the NFL. "As soon as I heard Goodell's intro, I was laughing." The part that got him giggling was the line "We will get our house in order first." The NFL commissioner used that same phrase minutes later, in response to a question from a New York Post reporter about whether he would resign. "That's textbook stuff that Frank uses all the time," says...

Luntz—the tubby, rumpled guy who runs the focus groups on Fox News after presidential debates, the political consultant and TV fixture whose word has been law in Republican circles since he helped write the 1994 Contract With America—has always been a hard man to please. But something is different now, he tells me. SNIP. His belief in unfettered capitalism and individual self-reliance appears stronger than ever. He hasn't become disillusioned with his very profitable career or his nomadic, solitary lifestyle. His complaints—that America is too divided ... SNIP "I just gave up, I didn't work on Mitt Romney's campaign. It...

At a talk to college students, Republican pollster Frank Luntz would only chastise Rush Limbaugh and right-wing radio off the record.Frank Luntz, the media-friendly Republican consultant and word wiz, told a group of college students this week that Rush Limbaugh and right-wing talk radio are "problematic" for the GOP and partly responsible for the stark polarization within the nation's political discourse. He only dared to speak so candidly about Limbaugh and other conservative hosts off the record. A secretly recorded video, though, captured Luntz's remark. A focus group of undecided voters appeared to be split over Mitt Romney's debate performance on foreign policy Monday night, with some saying he failed to distinguish how he would do things differently from President Barack Obama and others saying he finally came across as more "humane and relatable." The group, appearing on Fox News' Sean Hannity show along with Republican strategist Frank Luntz, declared Obama the overall winner of the debate when the two candidates stuck strictly to foreign policy and military issues. But when the debate veered into economic policy as a national security issue, most in the...

    1. Conservatives care most about the size of government. 2. Conservatives want to deport all illegal immigrants. 3. They worship Wall Street 4. Conservatives want to slash Social Security and Medicare. 5. Conservatives don't care about inequality. So, if everyone is concerned about the income gap, what's the big difference between left and right? It's the difference between opportunity and outcome. Conservatives want to increase opportunity, giving everyone the freedom and tools to prosper, so that the poor may someday become rich. Liberals want to redistribute income, making the rich - quite simply - less rich.

"Michele Bachmann is Glenn Close From Fatal Attraction" Franky Boy was caught on camera. “Rick Perry is George Bush without the intellect.” And then, once he was caught and realized there were cameras, he gives a great little remark to the guy that was recording it: “Take your suit and go. The United States has just witnessed its third straight rubber band election. Once again, Americans had their patience stretched, fired a Washington run amok and now want their new leaders to snap back to attention. The government Americans seek is simpler, more efficient and more accountable; one that takes on less but does better; one that executes the essential and eschews the excessive. First, a warning to both sides. Republicans, for their part, must realize that the voters have given them a reprieve, not an endorsement. In my polling last week, GOP voters agreed with this statement by more than...

Special to Sphere (Jan. 20) – It doesn't take a rocket scientist or a pollster to know that Americans are not happy with Washington. The honeymoon that greeted President Obama a year ago today has degenerated into hypercriticism, deep anxiety and downright anger. That may sound more like a high-profile Hollywood divorce than a political analysis, yet in some ways that's exactly what Americans are going through right now. As the former leader of the free world, Jimmy Carter deserves our respect. As a political analyst - attributing racism to the anger at President Obama - he is irresponsibly inaccurate. Obama's popularity hasn't tumbled because he's black. It's tumbled because he has come to represent Washington instead of those who sent him there. I know this because of a 6,400-person interview survey I conducted for my new book "What Americans Really Want ... Really." There are obvious parallels between Barack Obama’s push for health care reform and Bill Clinton’s ill-fated attempt 16 years ago. In both cases, an apparent legislative juggernaut hit a wall of public skepticism. Both presidents saw their poll numbers wilt in the summertime heat. Both White Houses staged a September address to Congress in an effort to regain the political initiative. We know how the story turned out last time. Clinton’s popularity, temporarily boosted by his September speech, quickly sank again. Health care reform withered on the vine. Public anger with Washington boiled higher. Consider this: A near unanimous 94% of Americans are concerned about our nation's infrastructure. Fully 84% of the public wants more money spent by the federal government -- and 83% wants more spent by state governments -- to improve America's infrastructure. It seems like every time I watch one of these debates and FoxNews has one of its focus groups, the room goes from all undecided to almost ALL Romney. And something about it doesn't pass the smell test. The reason is because the voters go from apparently undecided to making very strong statements in favor of Romney. I watched the entire debate on a JetBlue cross-country flight, missing only one answer where Romney said something about eduction that made the Luntz focus group needles hit the ceiling of approval. (The captain was updating us on landing time.) I was also able to hear Fred, Morton, Brit and Nina chew on the results, but it was the collective reaction of the Frank Luntz focus group on the Fox News Channel that was most riveting. Watch it for yourself. Romney swept nearly the entire room. If that group reflects the GOP primary electorate, Romney helped himself immensely today. Coupled...

FRANK LUNTZ, WWW.LUNTZ.COM: We had a lot of people participate and they are mad as hell. I have got to tell you something, in listening to what the Republicans have to say right now, they are very nervous about the future. They are not happy about the direction in Washington. And they really want a change. ..... LUNTZ: Thompson had several points during that debate where he really grabbed the audience's attention. But what I know your viewers want to see is the conflict. And one of the toughest conflicts was Mitt Romney verses John McCain over the issue of...

Focusing on Focus Groups: Why Opposing Forces REALLY Fear Romney posted by: Jeff Fuller | posted at: 2:23 PM | permalink here Focus Groups, in my opinion, are the untold story of this campaign so far . . . and help explain the motives behind the early, constant, and repeated attacks on Romney by rival campaigns and the mainstream media (MSM). I'll argue this claim below after presenting some of the focus group findings from the most recent debate. Focus Group #1 run by Frank Luntz (results generally shared on various Fox News programs): Click for video. While the...

ALL THE BIG questions for 2008 are on the Democratic side: Can Hillary Clinton show her humanity? Does Obama have enough experience? Will Edwards find a cheaper barber? But there is one big question that has hardly been asked at all, mostly because it threatens to upset the narrative of the best election in decades: Do Republicans have any chance whatsoever of winning the White House in 2008? Given the extraordinary unpopularity of the Bush administration, isn't the Democratic candidate, whoever he or she ultimately is, going to be a shoo-in? The simple answer is that it doesn't look good...

Okay folks, I know that this is a little tardy ingetting here, but both my connection and computer have been down for a week. David Brock, of Soros's puppet operation Media Matters, has been running a campaign to prevent PBS from using Conservative Republican David Luntz as a commentator on the PBS Democrat Forum. Unfortunately his e-mail campaign has already partially succeeded as can be seen from this excerpt from the e-mail I received: "Dear Friend: After days of your calls and emails, you have made an impact! This morning Neal Kendall, executive producer of PBS' Tavis Smiley, released a...

On FOX News, pollster Luntz declares Romney the winner and John McCain the loser. Romney is 'off the charts' in positive reaction to his answer on faith Mormon faith. Good comments by typical voters. Luntz uses an interesting method that allows tracking of the reactions to the candidates in real time.

WASHINGTON -- Pollster Frank Luntz for the past decade issued warnings to his fellow Republicans that they did not want to hear, but never has been so out of touch with them as he is today. "The Republican message machine is a skeleton of its former self," Luntz told me. "These people have no idea how the American people react to them"... ...He has clashed frequently with Rep. John Boehner, the current Republican leader of the House who stifled ethics legislation last year when he was still majority leader. Boehner, elected chairman of the House Republican Conference when the party...
