Take My Life and Let it Be - FranÂces R. HaÂverÂgal, FebÂruÂaÂry 1874. Take my life, and let it be consecrated, Lord, to Thee. Take my moments and my days; let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my hands, and let them move at the impulse of Thy love. Take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for Thee. Â Take my voice, and let me sing always, only, for my King. Take my lips, and let them be filled with messages from Thee. Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold. Take my...

I Need Thee Every Hour – Annie S. Hawks, 1872 I need Thee every hour, most gracious Lord; No tender voice like Thine can peace afford. Refrain I need Thee, O I need Thee; Every hour I need Thee; O bless me now, my Savior, I come to Thee. I need Thee every hour, stay Thou nearby; Temptations lose their power when Thou art nigh. Refrain I need Thee every hour, in joy or pain; Come quickly and abide, or life is in vain. Refrain I need Thee every hour; teach me Thy will; And Thy rich promises in me...

Methinks JCM's Small Towns should be the campaign theme song for McCain. Well I was born in a small town And I live in a small town Prob'ly die in a small town Oh, those small communities All my friends are so small town My parents live in the same small town My job is so small town Provides little opportunity Educated in a small town Taught the fear of Jesus in a small town Used to daydream in that small town Another boring romantic that's me But I've seen it all in a small town Had myself a ball...

Maybe Sting should start writing more instrumentals. The school teacher-turned-rock star topped Blender's list of the worst lyricists, thanks to lines that betray "mountainous pomposity (and) cloying spirituality," the music magazine said. The survey, contained in the November issue that hits newsstands next week, placed Rush drummer Neil Peart at No. 2, Creed frontman Scott Stapp at No. 3, Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher at No. 4, and soft-rocker Dan Fogelberg at No. 5. Blender assailed Sting for such alleged sins as name-dropping Russian novelist Vladimir Nabokov in the Police tune "Don't Stand So Close to Me," quoting a Volvo bumper...

Mark Steyn: A music book that's not muzak - Wilfrid Sheed's 'The House That George Built' moves from one memorable riff to another MARK STEYN | September 10, 2007 | "You can't receive all your inspiration from listening to old records," writes Wilfrid Sheed. "It's like receiving your fresh air in cans." I know what he means. Today, in 2007, we understand that It Had To Be You and The Way You Look Tonight and My Funny Valentine are great songs. They've been declared to be so, over and over. But I wonder if we'd have figured it out at...

NEW YORK — The Reverend Al Sharpton led a demonstration across Manhattan Thursday evening (May 3) that saw him and throng of supporters march to three of the four major record companies, calling for more "decency" in hip-hop lyrics. (Watch a video timeline of hip-hop under fire over the years, right here.) The march was in part a response to comments made by fired shock jock Don Imus, who claimed if his controversial remarks were made by a rapper it'd result in a hit song. Sharpton confronted Imus over his remarks on his own radio program, "The Sharpton Show," and...

SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo Inc. is expanding its online music section to include the lyrics of 400,000 songs, hoping to strike a chord with Web surfers looking for a more reliable alternative to Internet sites that publish the words without the permission of the copyright owners. The Sunnyvale-based company is touting the free service to be unveiled Tuesday as the Web’s largest legally licensed database of lyrics.“It fills a huge, gaping hole out there,” said Ian Rogers, general manager of Yahoo music. Song lyrics have been available through scores of other Web sites for years, but most of those destinations are...

At PlayOnLyrics we like to play around with misheard lyrics. Occasionally, however, you wish you had misheard a lyric, or can’t believe what you just heard. Back in the day, one time Tonight Show host and hack musician Steve Allen used to read out lyrics from popular songs just to make fun of young musicians. That used to bug us. Taking lyrics out of context can be a distasteful and irrelevant exercise by the smug and untalented. After all, “The Doo Ron Ron” is a great song about nothing. But, sometimes lyrics are just so bad you just have to...

Always: A singer’s journey through the life of Irving Berlinhttp://www.americanheritage.com/articles/magazine/ah/1998/7/1998_7_74.shtml http://tinyurl.com/mnk6m American Heritage Magazine November 1998 Volume 49, Issue 7 BY SUSANNA McCORKLE Like most baby boomers, I grew up hearing his songs and taking them for granted. I never gave a thought to who Irving Berlin was or how he had come to write the music that flowed through our lives. In the 1970s I saw a newspaper photograph of him singing “God Bless America” in the Nixon White House during Watergate and immediately consigned both him and the song to the “wrong” side. When I became a singer...

Degrading lyrics lead to early sex, study says Monday, August 07, 2006 By , Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Common sense says exposing children to sexually degrading song lyrics cannot be a good thing. Now, a multiyear study of teen sexual behavior and listening habits, led by a researcher in Pittsburgh, is setting out to prove it scientifically. The Rand Corp. study, released today, shows that the more often teens listen to sexually degrading songs -- marked by obscenities and stereotypes of women as sex objects and men as sexual predators -- the likelier they are to have sex at an early age....

Singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen may never see the $9.5 million US a court ordered his former business manager to pay after she failed to respond to allegations of stealing from his retirement savings, Cohen's lawyer said. A Superior Court judge granted Cohen, known for reflective songs such as Suzanne, a default judgment Monday. Cohen, 71, claimed in a lawsuit that Kelley Lynch siphoned $5 million US from his personal accounts and investments. He was left with a nest egg of about $150,000, the lawsuit claims. "She's hard to get in touch with. I don't know where she lives now, and I...

The music industry is to extend its copyright war by taking legal action against websites offering unlicensed song scores and lyrics. The Music Publishers' Association (MPA), which represents US sheet music companies, will launch its first campaign against such sites in 2006. MPA president Lauren Keiser said he wanted site owners to be jailed. Guitar licks and song scores are widely available on the internet but are "completely illegal", he told the BBC. Mr Keiser said he did not just want to shut websites and impose fines, saying if authorities can "throw in some jail time I think we'll be...

I'm posting this in hopes of getting opinions and advice about my growing annoyance of being bombarded with loud hard rock music everywhere I go. It's in grocery stores, department stores, even dentists offices, and it's ALWAYS on TV, in practically every single commercial. What's worse, I got a job at a major chain department store that caters to mid-America. It's not Penny'S but it is on a par with Penny's/ The sotre plays mostly rock and roll all day long. At night it's nothing but hard rock. The Killers, Lynrd Skynrd, Blondie, Billie Idol, Swiftfoot, ZZ Top, and on...

Back in the day, when I was almost too young to remember, hip-hop music used to challenge people. It really used to make people think. There were songs like “Fight the Power,” “What’s Going On,” Changes,” and songs that discussed real relationship issues. Nowadays all we have are a bunch of pointless rhymes with explicit lyrics thrown in between. There are no hidden meanings, no positive messages and no legitimate problems. We, as hip-hop and R&B fans, should stop supporting such pointless junk. The other day I was listening to the radio and I heard one song by Bobby Valentino,...

www.aol.com from an e-mail Decline Of American Culture - Lyrics Then & Now From Olivia 1-26-5 I looked at Billboard's top ten of their 'Hot 100' songs (which uses both radio plays and sales to rank songs) for 2003. I summarized the theme (s) of each song in a couple of words and extracted a sample lyric. If the song contained any 'mystery lyrics' -- those written in whatever passes as 'English' these days, but which have no meaning to the average educated person -- I included those as well. I then did the same thing for the year...

One of the kids gave my wife an album of 1970's "folk" songs, which she has been playing. One of the songs is "Ode to Billie Joe" by Bobbie Gentry. What I want to know is this: What was Billie Joe McAllister dropping off the Tallahatchee Bridge ?? I thought, while we're waiting to learn whether Abu Musab Zarqawi actually got captured (and, hopefully, beheaded ) we could solve this "ancient mystery". I propose a national contest: What was Billie Joe droppin' off the Tallahatchee Bridge ?First Prize: An all expenses paid sexy weekend at one of those Pocono honeymoon resorts with Hillary Clinton.Second...

Rap lyrics about killing cops and raping women get your goat? You ain't heard nothing yet. Check out Dirty Kuffar, the latest hit music video from British rapper Sheikh Terra and his Soul Salah Crew. For those not in the know, "Kuffar" is what Muslims call a non-believer, "Salah" means righteousness or piety in Arabic, "Terra" is rap lingo for "terror," and the name of the group is an intentional rip-off of the name of British rap group "So Solid Crew." The lyrics brag about the attack on the World Trade Center, claim that Bush and Blair will be "thrown...

PORTLAND, Ore. — A long-lost briefcase full of notes and lyrics that were intended for the 1981 U2 (search) album "October" (search) has been returned, 23 years after it was stolen at a Portland concert. U2 frontman Bono made the announcement Wednesday during an appearance before the World Affairs Council of Oregon (search), saying the returned notes were "an act of grace." Bono had to rewrite the "October" lyrics in the studio, and band members called it their worst recording experience. Though the record was generally well-received, it didn't earn the praise of the band's debut album, "Boy," or third...

Once again, the MTV Video Music Awards is near us, August 29 at the American Airlines Arena. Once again, the material is smut-laden and is not appropriate for the family. Nominee: Usher featuring Lil' Jon & Ludacris, "Yeah!" Comment: Men are on the prowl at a nightclub. There’s talk of getting women naked and wanting It seems there is an excess of smut here. “A lady in the street, but a freak in the bed.” Nominee: Britney Spears, "Toxic" Comment: Sexually explicit content. Origin of 'Jingle Bells' Song Is Debated By RUSS BYNUM, Associated Press Writer SAVANNAH, Ga. - Dashing in the sun, through oaks and Spanish moss. Sleigh riding's no fun, when there's no snow to cross. Could "Jingle Bells" really be a song of the South? It's not hard to see why balmy Savannah has a tough time selling the Christmas carol as a native creation. Or why the claim makes folks in Medford, Mass. — hometown of the song's composer — cry humbug. This much is known: James Pierpont was the organist at Savannah's Unitarian Universalist Church in 1857 when...

PARIS(AFP) - Mark Raboo speaks of the moment when he wished the floor had opened and swallowed him, and all because of some misheard lyrics. The 24-year-old was jamming with a rock band when a guitarist launched into the opening chords of The Who classic "I Can't Explain," and he joined in on vocals. "The real lyrics were 'A certain kind, can't explain'," says Raboo. "But I misheard them as 'Been circumsized, can't explain.' The laughter ended that cover pretty quickly..." For Lisa -- her last name understandably remains under wraps -- public death by ridicule occurred when she took...
