I'm having fits uninstalling McAfee and replacing it with Norton. McAfee had become just too irritating to the point of shutting down some downloads from Amazon (but not all, no consistency there). It kept giving me pop ups at seemingly random times. Now, McAfee just shut down everything when Norton tried an uninstall. Anyone have similar problems?? I'm using my blessed Apple IPad now.

The wave of distributed denial of service attacks that hit U.S. banks in October was next to nothing compared to what could happen if cybercriminals actually carry through with their plans for next year. According to a report released today by McAfee Labs, an impending attack on U.S. financial institutions—dubbed Project Blitzkrieg—isn’t only a possibility, it’s a “credible threat.” “McAfee Labs believes that Project Blitzkrieg is a credible threat to the financial industry and appears to be moving forward as planned,” the report reads. “Although Project Blitzkrieg hasn’t yet infected thousands of victims and we cannot directly confirm any cases...

After weeks on the run, anti-virus software founder John McAfee has gone public in Guatemala, where he plans to ask for asylum because he fears persecution in Belize. McAfee made two public appearances on Tuesday in Guatemala City, where he fielded questions from reporters and proclaimed his innocence in the November murder of a neighbor. McAfee spoke to The Associated Press in a restaurant near a high-end hotel where he is staying in Guatemala City after sneaking out of neighboring Belize. There, the 67-year-old millionaire was pictured kissing his 20-year-old girlfriend Sam Vanegas. He is also in the company of...

Computer security industry pioneer John McAfee says he has gone into hiding in Belize because he believes authorities there are trying to frame him for the murder of a neighbor, a crime he says he did not commit, according to Wired magazine. Belize police are searching for McAfee as "a person of interest" in a murder investigation. "You can say I'm paranoid about it, but they will kill me, there is no question. They've been trying to get me for months. They want to silence me," Wired quoted McAfee as saying on its website. "I am not well liked by...
  • John McAfee Claims He's Innocent of Neighbour's Murder (claims they were trying to kill him)

In an telephone interview with Wired on Monday, McAfee revealed he was convinced the police were after him and would kill him if he went in for an interview. He said he was innocent and that he hid under the sand while the police searched his property. He is currently on the run somewhere in Belize, though his exact location is unknown. McAfee claims he has nothing to do with the murder nor knows anything about it, except that the neighbour had been shot. McAfee also expressed concern that he was the real target and that Faull's murder was a...

Antivirus pioneer John McAfee is on the run from murder charges, Belize police say. According to Marco Vidal, head of the national police force's Gang Suppression Unit, McAfee is a prime suspect in the murder of American expatriate Gregory Faull, who was gunned down Saturday night at his home in San Pedro Town on the island of Ambergris Caye. Details remain sketchy so far, but residents say that Faull was a well-liked builder who hailed originally from California. The two men had been at odds for some time. Last Wednesday, Faull filed a formal complaint against McAfee with the mayor's...

John McAfee was reportedly arrested in Belize for having a firearm without a license. His story sounds just as unbelievable as the false arrest itself. ZoomLocal news channel News 5 in Belize reports that McAfee founder John McAfee was arrested at his research facility in Orange Walk for having a firearm without a license. McAfee calls the arrest bogus, claiming that it was an intentional move because he failed to bribe a local political boss in the local district. "On Monday at six o’clock, I was awakened by the sound of a bullhorn, a megaphone," McAfee explains. "I went outside...

Our community has a unified disaster system. We have several organizations, local government, county government, city government, hospitals, school district and businesses involved in Disaster Planning and Response. Because we are in the northwest corner of the state of Iowa with border neighbors in Nebraska and South Dakota we often have regional exercises. Several times a year we have Disaster Exercises where all of our teams "play together". Today was one of those days. At 8AM this morning the team started to gather at the local event center to prepare for the arrival of the exercise "victims". The victims were...

I did a free scan with one of those Registor company that was fun, an than they leave you with your mess. RegCure explaination about Active Shield Error: Some components of Active Shield are either missing or might not have been installed properly. Sound familiar? Active Shield errors are related to components of McAfee products that have become corrupted or missing. Fixing these errors can be a pain and involves uninstalling McAfee, reinstalling McAfee, editing your autoexec.bat file, and other complicated steps. Sometimes you get these errors when you don’t even use the McAfee products because perhaps the software...

I have McAfee security suite. It ran somewhat fine until the latest "upgrade". Now new windows take way to long to to open, and even the boot up process to where I can actually use the computer takes a lot longer. I tried uninstalling everything except the virus scan, and it still runs like a turtle. From what I read, Mcafee is RAM resident and the newest release must be a huge RAM hog. It gave me the excuse to order the extra 512M of memory - Rambus RDRAM 800 MHz BTW - very expensive but I don't think that...

Recently, I overheard an IT professional complaining about her users. Veronica's company has 300 employees, many of whom would have been called "paper pushers" in an earlier era. Some of those employees download software and install it on their computers, and it often causes havoc for the support staff. Veronica's specific rant was about screensavers (some of which carry a payload of spyware, making it a security issue as well as a support problem), but it could have been any sort of application. Veronica had looked at a $10,000 hardware solution, but even that required 10 hours a week for...

Consumer versions of McAfee Inc.'s leading software for securing PCs is susceptible to a flaw that can expose passwords and other sensitive information stored on personal computers, researchers said Monday. The vulnerability affects many of McAfee's most popular consumer products, including its Internet Security Suite, SpamKiller, Privacy Service and Virus Scan Plus titles, said Marc Maiffret, chief hacking officer at eEye Digital Security Inc., a competing maker of security products. McAfee spokeswoman Siobhan MacDermott confirmed the vulnerability and said software engineers were testing a fix. She said officials expected to release the patch Wednesday using a feature that automatically updates...

Chip-level attacks target a vulnerability in the processor rather than the software Researchers have claimed that "chip-level threats" pose a potential problem for Intel-powered Mac systems. A chip-level attack targets a feature or vulnerability in the processor rather than attacking software as is the case with nearly all today's security threats. Examples of chip-level attacks are rare. The last known serious outbreak dates back to 1998, when the CIH/Chernobyl virus embedded itself into the flash-BIOS of infected systems. Security vendor McAfee said in a recent white paper about security challenges for Apple systems that chip-level threats are a potential problem...

Virus slayer McAfee admitted on Friday that an error in its definition file meant its security tools had flagged a few harmless good eggs along with its usual horde of saboteurs as it policed the cyber-streets. Antivirus software detected Microsoft Office components--Excel.exe and Graph.exe--and Adobe Systems' (nasdaq: ADBE - news - people ) AdobeUpdateManager.exe--an application installed alongside Adobe products that deals with software updates, as a virus called W95/CTX.
