PORT RICHEY — Deputy Matthew Kadel was taking a man to jail the morning of July 19 when he decided to grab some food. It was 9 a.m. and he'd been working since 5. He was hungry and thirsty and had at least a 20-minute drive ahead of him. As Kadel, 45, pulled into the McDonald's drive-through and placed his order, the man in the back seat — Richard Zukoski, 21, arrested on auto burglary and theft charges — used his own handcuff key to free himself.
Starting in January 2010, US McDonald's restaurants will no longer charge for Wi-Fi: The quick-service chain has service in 11,000 of its 14,000 locations in the US, and previously charge $2.95 for two hours access. The network is operated by AT&T, originally contracted by Wayport which was acquired by the phone giant last year. Most AT&T subscribers get free access at McDonald's, Starbucks, and a few thousand other locations...

McDonald's Sales Take Hit From US Joblessness McDonald's US sales decline deepens as joblessness, competition catch up to burger chain By Ashley M. Heher, AP Retail Writer December 8, 2009 CHICAGO (AP) -- The supersized recession that was a boon for business last year caught up further with McDonald's Corp. in November, as high unemployment ate into sales. While the world's largest burger chain is still faring better than its competitors, who've increasingly been pushing value menus and discounts of their own, the restaurant's fortunes likely won't improve unless the U.S. economy does. "I think ultimately, we'll need job growth...

McDonald's logo is going green to promote a more eco-friendly image in Europe. It is swapping its traditional red backdrop for a deep green. The company says about 100 German McDonald's will make the change by the end of the year. Some franchises in Great Britain and France already have started using the new color scheme. And our last word in business today: emerald arches.

McDonald's Cooking Up Dollar Menu for Breakfast

High unemployment, which stands at 10.2%, hits breakfast sales particularly hard as fewer workers commute and stop in for breakfast. Some of the fast-food industry's most frequent visitors -- teenagers and men between the ages of 18 and 35 -- have an even higher rate of joblessness. That has hurt McDonald's sales, and the chain on Monday is expected to report flat to slightly negative same-store-sales for October in the U.S., a slowdown from recent months. World-wide results should be positive overall, helped by stronger sales in other regions. McDonald's Corp. is setting a course to add a dollar menu...

REYKJAVIK (Reuters) - Thousands of Icelanders lined up at McDonald's restaurants to order their last Big Macs before the U.S. fast-food chain abandons the crisis-hit island at midnight Saturday due to soaring costs. The world's largest fast-food company said earlier this week that all three of its restaurants in Iceland, operated by franchisee Jon Ogmundsson, would shut down October 31. The outlets have been packed since the announcement, with lines at one restaurant on the east side of the city backing up out the door and onto the street. At lunchtime Friday the outlet's parking lot was full and staff...

McDonald's Posts Strong Profit, Predicts Solid Sales

McDonald's posted a stronger-than-expected quarterly profit on Thursday, helped by cost controls and rising sales in all regions, and expects same-store sales to remain positive in October even though people eat out less often. Shares of the world's largest hamburger chain rose 2 percent in premarket trading. McDonald's [MCD 58.33 --- UNCH ] and some other fast-food chains have been outperforming other restaurant companies due to their lower-priced fare, but rising unemployment is erasing that advantage.
Commerce: Is it just us, or does McDonald's opening at the Louvre sound ... just wrong? Nothing against the fast food giant.
McDonald's Sued Over Gold Earring in Sandwich

A Chicago man has filed a lawsuit against McDonald's Corporation after he says he swallowed a gold earring in his sandwich. The man purchased the sandwich on Aug. 11 from the McDonald's at Chicago's Navy Pier, according to the suit filed on Wednesday in the circuit court of Cook County, Ill. The plaintiff, Boguslaw Nedza, claims after he ate the sandwich "the earring became lodged in his throat and stomach and efforts to remove it by emergency personnel were unsuccessful." Nedza is now suing McDonald's for the injuries he sustained from ingesting the jewelry.

Ever wonder what kind of fish end up in a Filet-O-Fish sandwich? The answer is usually hoki, a bug-eyed sea creature found deep in the Pacific waters of New Zealand. But it turns out that exporting millions of pounds of the fish each year -- McDonald’s alone at one time used 15 million pounds annually -- is depleting the hoki supply and pitting conservationists against commercial interests. “We have major concerns,” said Peter Trott, the fisheries program manager...
