America, you were warned: Big holiday party cancelled, fashion industry in crisis mode after Trump victory the annual holiday party for the fashion industry hosted by publicist James La Force and his husband, writer Stephen Henderson, has been cancelled. . . . The L.A. Times reports that the couple had custom invitations printed in advance with the assumption that Hillary Clinton would be president and the national mood would be jolly. Alas, no one feels like partying, so the invitations were sent out with not only a cancellation notice inside, but a note saying that the party budget would be...

For the first time ever, the Mall of America is hosting an African-American Santa. Santa's real name is Larry Jefferson, and he hails from Texas. (Don't let your kids read this.) "It's no big deal, I'm still Santa, I just happen to be a Santa of Color," Jefferson told CNN affiliate WCCO. Jefferson will spend four days taking pictures with families and listening to Christmas wishes, by appointment only. "We are looking to have a Santa for everyone," Santa Experience owner Landon Luther told WCCO. Luther met Jefferson at the Santa Convention in Missouri over the summer, and out of...

The corruption of American culture is evident in many ways, but few markers are more telling than the way Hollywood entertains us at Christmastime. It was 70 years ago when “It’s a Wonderful Life” was released. NBC describes it as “a holiday classic and remains the movie people associate with Christmas more than any other. Frank Capra’s definitive film is a tearjerker that proves that, even in our darkest hours, the human spirit can and will rise triumphant.” Today, we are being treated to obscene lyrics, raw sex, misogyny, and violence. Not one of the four Christmas-themed films released this...

A war on Christmas? Has nobody seen Arthur Christmas? The North Pole has stealth technology and fanatical commando elves—you screw with that at your own peril.  But there was a time in America when celebrating Christmas was illegal. For 22 years in the 17th century, from 1659-1681, celebrating Christmas carried a hefty fine imposed by Puritans who viewed the holiday as a borrowing from pagan Roman celebrations. “Whosoever shall be found observing any such day as Christmas or the like, either by forbearing of labor, feasting, or any other way, upon any such account as aforesaid, every such person so...

President Barack Obama’s Department of Veterans Affairs has banned employees at its facility in Salem, Virginia, from saying “Merry Christmas” to veterans. It started as a broader ban that included Christmas trees. Federal law recognizes Christmas as an official federal holiday (5 U.S.C. § 6103) and provides federal employees with a paid day off to celebrate the Christian belief in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ.Every year, a White House Christmas Tree and a Capitol Christmas Tree grace those two respective buildings in Washington D.C., and a National Christmas Tree is also officially lighted outdoors for the public to enjoy during that time...

'Tis the season for some to take offense when a store clerk says "happy holidays" instead of "merry Christmas," or when a coffee chain converts to plain red cups for the holiday. The "war on Christmas" trope seems to surface with Black Friday sales, but who is actually at war? It is easy to imagine saying "merry Christmas" as another cudgel in the culture wars between Christians and the irreligious. The actual story, however, is much more nuanced. Public Religion Research Institute asked a nationally representative sample of Americans whether retailers should greet their customers with "happy holidays" or "season’s...

It offered a lesson in simplicity, in purity- a lesson of the heart. It was one of the early broadcast tales to nudge us into focusing what was important about the holidays in general and Christmas in particular. Photo from Wikimedia Commons Late in 1940, so the story goes, Irving Berlin found himself in Los Angeles writing songs for the movie "Holiday Inn," starring two of the biggest stars of the moment, Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire.  The challenge Berlin had set himself was enormous: to capture the spirit of major holidays in popular song.  And the Christmas song had to be the best of all.  Nothing about Los Angeles, where he found himself, reminded him of the Christmases he'd known as a young boy back in New York City. The video below is a Coca Cola commercial from about five years ago that takes up the Christmas theme of the star of Christmas.Let us review the impact that Star of Christmas had on the wise men, the Magi. The star moved them to seek meaning outside themselves. It made them look out and up.The star called them beyond what was familiar in their own country and world and expanded their horizons toward Christ and His kingdom. The star summoned them to seek Christ, and when they found him, to worship him.The Star drew them to be generous to a poor...

    I. The Paradox of this Night - In a way, we are too familiar with the Christmas story, and so many of its strange paradoxes and stunning “absurdities” fail to shock and amaze us. I love snowmen, candy canes, snowflakes and all kinds of Christmassy things,” said Siebert.A nativity scene, Siebert’s favorite Christmas decoration, had been a part of the park decorations as long as she could remember. So the 13-year-old wrote a letter to the editor of the local newspaper to let everyone know how she felt about this year’s omission.  “It would be nice if everybody...

When I was a kid growing up in Detroit and Boston, there were multiple Christmas celebrations in public school. Everyone participated in the celebrations, including the Jews and the many individuals of Middle Eastern descent. Christmas carols were sung, presents were exchanged and food was consumed in a partylike atmosphere. There were very few people stoking the fires of sensitivity or trying to make everyone feel different. There’s nothing wrong with diversity, but there is also nothing wrong with unity and enjoying overarching fun and good will. When someone said “Merry Christmas,” it was regarded as a salutation of good...
