TCM is continuing its weekend of great movies by following their present airing on "Ben-Hur" with MGM's other big hit of 1959: Alfred Hitchcock's "North By Northwest"- One of my 2 favorite Hitchcock films("Vertigo" is the other) and my favorite of his 4 with Mr. Grant.

The original action film starring Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen featured Russian troops invading America. In the remake Chinese troops lead the invasion - but bosses at MGM studio are to spend more than $1 million on digital special effects to make it appear the invaders are from North Korea.

Whenever you remake a revered Hollywood film, there’s bound to be controversy, but going right to the original material is certainly an interesting approach. Warner Bros is in early talks with Robert Zemeckis to direct a live-action remake of the The Wizard of Oz and plans to use the original script from the 1939 classic. Warner Bros owns the screenplay because Ted Turner bought it along with the MGM library before Warner Bros bought Turner’s empire. MGM studio files for bankruptcy, Icahn backs plan updated 11/3/2010 12:16:28 PM ET By Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK (Reuters) - Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc filed for bankruptcy on Wednesday, under a plan that would put one of Hollywood's most storied film studios under the control of its lenders. The Chapter 11 filing follows a vote by MGM creditors last week to endorse a "prepackaged" bankruptcy that would put MGM under the control of Hollywood executives Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, who control the Spyglass Entertainment film company.

We generally tend to pass over the news on MGM‘s financial machinations, but this month there is some big news on the future of the company that owns the Stargate franchise. Since it is bound to stir questions among Stargate fans (not to mention fans of James Bond and The Hobbit, as both film franchises are waiting on MGM’s ability to pay for them), we wanted to let you know what’s up

Well this should not be a surprise to anyone but Red Dawn is the latest film to be put on hold due to MGM’s financial status. With no executives to control the studio, creditors have placed the responsibility of the once great film company on themselves. This move has affected all the movies it was tied to, from the twenty-third Bond film to The Hobbit. Because of MGM’s financial problems Daniel Craig left Bond 23 for Girl with a Dragon Tatoo and Gullimero Del Toro left The Hobbit.

Warner Bros. today will launch a service giving the public the opportunity to custom-order DVDs of films never before released via the medium. The move is seen as a response to dwindling DVD sales and also to customer demand for titles that while not totally obscure, didn't necessarily generate enough heat to merit a full-on DVD release. Fitch Ratings on Monday cut its ratings on MGM Mirage (MGM.N) to one step above default and warned a distressed debt exchange of the casino operator's bonds "appears imminent or inevitable." Fitch cut MGM's debt rating three notches to 'C', an extremely speculative grade, from "CCC", and said it was unable to give an outlook because of the debt's high level of risk. Police made two more arrests Friday in the MGM Grand group beating case, after a massive late-night SWAT raid at the home of the first teen charged in the attack. Demarcus Smith, 18, and a teenager whose name was not released because he is a juvenile were taken into custody shortly after midnight, Las Vegas police said.
