    Internation Business Times ^ | January 21, 2015 | Adam Lidgett
Before becoming a Florida senator or a 2016 Republican presidential hopeful, Marco Rubio was apparently just another kid caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. After a bad first year at college in Missouri, Rubio returned home to Miami shortly before the summer of 1990, when he was arrested in May at age 18 for being in a public park after it had closed for the night, the Washington Post reported Thursday. The misdemeanor offense was eventually dismissed, and most of the documentation that led to the dismissal of charges has been destroyed by the Miami-Dade County court...

Protests and debates have erupted across the nation this week in the wake of a grand jury's decision not to indict the Cleveland police officers who fatally shot 12-year-old Tamir Rice. Most of that debate has centered on whether police had real reason to fear for their lives, as the grand jury believed. Few have suggested that Rice -- a preteen playing with a toy gun in a park -- deserved to be killed. But that's exactly what Lt. Javier Ortiz, president of Miami's police union, argues on Twitter during a debate with Billy Corben over the case. Ortiz writes...

Neglect and abandonment landed the girl in foster care. But its what happened next, she said, that nearly destroyed her. In a hushed courtroom in Miamis gleaming new downtown Childrens Courthouse, a teenage foster child inventoried the traumas she had endured at the hands of those who were assigned to protect her: She had been starved and beaten, molested and forced to fight during her two years in foster homes and group care. As a runaway, she was trafficked into prostitution. And, just as her life appeared to be mending, the girl was raped by a driver in whose care...

It had been nearly 400 days since Jose Fernandez stepped onto the mound in a major league game. The long road to get back from Tommy John surgery was trying but ultimately inspiring. Appropriatedly, so his triumphant return to the Marlins in a rollicking matinee revival Thursday at Marlins Park. After a slow start, the charismatic Cuban not only resurrected the magic of his Rookie of the Year 2013 season, he contributed an uplifting home run that sent the Marlins on course for a 5-4 victory that concluded a three-game sweep of the defending World Series champions. Fernandez, now 13-0...

There's a war on cops going on and there's also a war against those who dare to defend them.In case you've missed it, there's yet another controversy over how police handled a group of rowdy teenagers at a pool party in McKinney, Texas. After repeatedly asking a young black woman to leave the area, a white police officer (because every time a white police officer does anything to a black person it's racist, you know) threw her to the ground in an attempt to conduct an arrest. When two of the woman's male friends ran up behind the officer, he...

Word on the street is Miami Dolphins reserve defensive tackle A.J. Francis has good acceleration, an excellent motor and a high ceiling in his 2014 Dodge Charger. He's an Uber driver. Francis is under contract to earn $510,000 this year in his third NFL season, but paychecks don't start coming until July, and it's uncertain he'll make the team. He wanted some extra spending money, so in April he became a driver for hire with Uber, making $40 to $50 an hour. "I'm not putting all my eggs in one basket," Francis said following the Dolphins' offseason practice Monday. "Where...
