  • How the Chevy Volt Is Like ObamaCare

March is an important month in the ongoing saga of President Obama’s abject policy failures. First, Chevrolet announced that it would temporarily cease production of the president’s much-touted car for the green economy, the Chevy Volt. Second, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear the state-led challenge to the president’s health care legislation. And while “ObamaCar” and ObamaCare may seem like unrelated topics, in this case they have at least three elements in common. Both were sold as a key to creating jobs and economic growth. Only last year the president predicted that there would be 1 million electric cars on...

Michigan Democrats have introduced a plan to pick up the tab for tuition at state universities — up to $9,500 a year — for every student who has attended Michigan schools for his entire K–12 career. The plan is expected to cost $1.7 billion per year, or $442 for every household in the state. It is a dramatic change from the status quo — currently, Michigan subsidizes its state universities less than almost any other state. And it is a terrible idea — it is a handout to middle- and upper-class parents and students, as well as an incentive for...

It was billed as proposal to prevent Michigan from becoming a right-to-work state. Instead, it would put mandatory collective bargaining into the state constitution and usurp power away from elected officials. On March 2, United Auto Workers President Bob King announced that a coalition of unions would push for an amendment to the Michigan Constitution that would prohibit right-to-work legislation. Right-to-work prohibits labor contracts that require non-union employees to pay union dues. Currently, employees in Michigan who work under union-negotiated contracts have to pay union dues even if they don't belong to the union. King said the unions promoting the...

U.S. Sen. Carl Levin has scheduled a March 20 hearing of his Senate Armed Services Committee to scrutinize Air Force plans to cut Air National Guard troops across the nation, including a one-third reduction of military personnel at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. An Air Force report concludes that eliminating Selfridge’s 24 A-10 Thunderbolt aircraft while adding four KC135 air refueling tankers would cost the Harrison Township base 720 jobs. But the Michigan National Guard said errors in the Air Force count puts the true number at 561, compared to an overall troop force at Selfridge of 1,586. In a...

JACKSON --Consumers Energy wants to recover $32.6 million from electric customers. The Jackson-based utility filed an application last week with the Michigan Public Service Commission to recover revenue for the period of December 2010 through November 2011 to level out variations in sales. Consumers filed two options to recover this money. The first would refund about $5.2 million to residential customers, charge $6.2 million to those who use lower voltages of power, and charge $31.6 million to higher-voltage customers. The second option would be to charge all customers $28.2 million, charge $4.8 million to lower-voltage customers and refund $396,000 to...

The highest paid city official in Dearborn in 2011 wasn’t Mayor John B. O’Reilly. It was a police lieutenant who had a gross salary of $151,856 in 2011, or $17,233 more than what the mayor’s gross salary was, and $32,758 more than what the police chief earned. Six-figured gross salaries are not unusual for police departments throughout Michigan. A Dearborn police sergeant made $134,505 in gross salary in 2011, which was a $39,747 increase over the sergeant’s 2010 gross pay. Five police department employees had gross pay of more than $120,000 in 2011. In all, 29 of the 185 police...

He’s disheartened with what he sees as a lack of understanding with open-carry gun laws and has hired an attorney to “explore the possibility” of a lawsuit against local law enforcement authorities. Rick Santorum's campaign is asking for an investigation of what it called the "backroom deal" that resulted in a narrow delegate victory for Mitt Romney in Michigan's Republican primary on Tuesday. In a letter to the Republican National Committee's legal counsel, the Santorum campaign's chief lawyer claims the Michigan Republican Party improperly awarded both of the at-large delegates to Romney, instead of splitting them between the two candidates. "It is our understanding that several public supporters and Michigan surrogates of an opposing campaign voted in favor of the delegate allocation change which assisted their chosen candidate," Santorum's general counsel Cleta...

Not so fast. When it comes to delegates, it turns out Mitt Romney did not win Michigan. ABC News projects that the 30 delegates awarded based on Michigan’s Tuesday primary will be evenly split – 15 delegates for Mitt Romney and 15 delegates for Rick Santorum. Mitt Romney may have won the overall vote by a margin of 3 points , but Michigan awards it’s delegates based on how the candidates did in each of the state’s 14 congressional districts, not solely on the popular vote totals. General Motors earned its largest profit ever in 2011, two years after it nearly collapsed into financial ruin. Strong sales in the U.S. and China helped the 103-year-old carmaker turn a profit of $7.6 billion, beating its old record of $6.7 billion in 1997 during the pickup truck and SUV boom. GM is a vastly different company than it was back then. It’s smaller, has less debt and its contract with the United Auto Workers is less costly. Michigan’s narrow win for Mitt Romney on Tuesday might be considered ho-hum. After all, he beat John McCain there in 2008, he grew up there and his father was governor of the pleasant peninsula. On the other hand, it’s undeniable that Romney sweated out this one until all the votes were counted, hence his victory statement: “…we didn’t win by a lot, but we won by enough and that’s all that counts.” That’s not exactly a victory lap. I heard Newt Gingrich say on Saturday that he expects Romney will likely have a good day on Tuesday. This I believe is Newt’s subtle way of releasing his supporters to vote for Rick Santorum in Michigan where he is polling 8% and also low in Arizona. Newt is sagacious enough to know that while he cannot ask his voters to do this, he knows that Santorum dealing Romney's campaign a mortal wound on Tuesday would be the best chance of making this a one on one race between himself (a strong conservative) and Santorum (a strong conservative). Mitt blew...

With a strong, successful push over the weekend to move conservatives, especially social conservatives, back to him, Rick Santorum has re-taken the lead in the latest Mitchell/Rosetta Stone Poll of Michigan conducted for MIRS (Michigan Information & Research Service) Sunday night. The two front runners are still in a statistical dead heat, although Romney (35%) has lost his lead to Rick Santorum (37%) while Newt Gingrich (9%) and Ron Paul (8%) are locked in a battle for third place. Eleven percent remains undecided.

The Republican presidential race faces a potential turning point on Tuesday in contests in Arizona and Michigan, where upstart Rick Santorum threatens to plunge an already unpredictable nominating battle into chaos. Mitt Romney, the former front-runner and presumed nominee, and Santorum are in a close race in Michigan, the state where Romney was raised and his father was an auto executive and popular governor. A Santorum win there would be a devastating blow to Romney, turning lingering doubts about his ability to win the allegiance of Republican primary voters into a deep panic in the party's senior ranks. "If Santorum...

I’m watching Justice with Judge Jeanine Pirro. She personally seems to be impartial but she has this panel of three guests who are all dumping on Rick Santorum. They are mocking him for his stance on moral issues. The fact that Santorum is –doing well in the Michigan Polls is impressive – yet they are all talking about it as though it is a negative. They are acting, spinning this as though Santorum was the FAVORITE going into Michigan and he should be leading by a landslide! Following those three shills, her next guest was Joe Piscopo, who was the...

As readers know, if there is one thing that gets under our skin here at BCI, it is deception.  This one by former Gov. Romney about a situation here in Massachusetts affects how the country perceives values important to many Catholics, so BCI felt we could not let it sit without a response. In the Republican Presidential debate Wednesday evening at about 8:50pm or so, former Gov. Mitt Romney said he never infringed on the rights of Catholics as governor of Massachusetts by requiring the Catholic Church to provide morning-after pills to rape victims–it was “entirely voluntary” on the part...

Santorum Urges Michigan Voters To 'Shock the Country' By Jonathan Easley - 02/25/12 Rick Santorum unloaded on Mitt Romney at the Americans for Prosperity Forum in Michigan on Saturday, in an aggressive speech that earned him a standing ovation as he urged the crowd to “shock the country” by voting for the “complete conservative.” Santorum had vaulted into the lead in national polls and in Michigan, following his surprising three-state caucus sweeps in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri, but has faded after getting hammered at a debate in Arizona on Wednesday over his record as a senator. Romney has since overtaken...

The Republican presidential aspirant was at it again on Friday, praising the greenery of his birth state in advance of next week's primary. "This feels good, being back in Michigan,” Romney said during a speech in Detroit. “The trees are the right height. The streets are just right.” The latest bout of rhapsodizing almost perfectly echoes Romney’s earlier comments about the size of the Great Lake state’s timber earlier this week.
