DETROIT - Detroit police said a store owner on Detroit's west side shot three men who were allegedly breaking into his business early Friday morning, killing one of them. Police said the 51-year-old owner heard the men breaking into his liquor store on Joy Road near Ohio just after 3 a.m. He opened fire on them, killing a man in his 20s. The other two were critically wounded and are hospitalized, police said.
  • Flush with cash, Romney moves into Obama territory, upper Midwest states (Michigan and WI)

    09/09/2012 1:52:08 PM PDT · by Arthurio · 12 replies
PORTSMOUTH, N.H. – Flush with cash, Mitt Romney plans to open a new front in the White House race by challenging President Barack Obama in upper Midwest states where he might not have dug in otherwise. Obama is intensifying his efforts to cast his Republican rival as out of touch, which he's already been working pretty hard at doing. This is the beginning of the homestretch to Election Day, when everything in the two campaigns goes into overdrive and a September or October surprise could upend it all. -snip- In the coming weeks, Romney's team is expected to pay for...

Charlotte: Unimpressed by US President Barack Obama's fiery speech seeking re-election, the two Indian-American Governors, Nikki Haley and Bobby Jindal, today said that Mitt Romney, the Republican presidential candidate, is the best person to lead the country. Both Jindal, the Governor of Louisiana, and Haley, the Governor of South Carolina, are rising stars of the Republican party and were quick to issue statements after Obama concluded his Democratic presidential nomination acceptance speech. "The last time Barack Obama spoke before the Democratic National Convention, he told us of hope and change that we could believe in. What a difference four years...

Barack Obama is keeping his promise to lower the sea levels, and he’s starting with the drought plagued Midwest where Lake Michigan water is being shipped by the boat loads over to China! By using a little known loophole in the 2006 Great Lakes Compact, Obama minions are allowing Nestle Company to export precious fresh water out of Lake Michigan to the tune of an estimated $500,000 million to $1.8 million per day profit. By draining the precious jewel of the Great Lakes in the middle of America, our federal water managers are allowing the export of our water out...

For several years the left and their media minions have claimed that by bailing out Chrysler and General Motors, President Obama saved Detroit. On Friday, the perilously liberal schlockumentarian Michael Moore debunked this in an article at the Huffington Post astonishingly saying, "No, he didn't." "Last week, I said on the HuffPost Live webcast that we had all better start practicing how to say 'President Romney' because, living in Michigan, I can tell you that there's trouble here on the two peninsulas and it's not just because Romney is a native son or that we like to watch kids from...

When the Romney-Ryan ticket announced a major ad campaign in eight states last night, the media noted that Wisconsin and Michigan were not among them and then jumped to the conclusion that these states are no longer in play. Wrong. Romney spokeswoman Andrea Saul told Right Turn that the campaign is “definitely not” abandoning these states. She told me: “Stay tuned.” The Romney-Ryan camp, I was told, has expensive ground games in these states, as well as in Pennsylvania. Saul provided the stats: Michigan * 21 offices across the state * More than 1 million voter contacts * Sixth most...

In two months we Americans will go to the polls once again to decide who the president will be for the next four years. We will not be allowed to vote on those who wield the true power in this country. On November 6th we will not vote for the chairman of ExxonMobil or JPMorgan Chase or Citibank or the Premier of China. That day will come, but not this year. Now, I know there are a goodly number of you out there who believe there's not a snowball's chance in Kenya that Barack Obama will not be re-elected to...

Union bosses now have a chance to seize control of Michigan's constitution. The state Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that the so-called Protect Our Jobs proposal will be on the Nov. 6 statewide ballot. The union-backed plan would change the state constitution and allow unions to challenge any current, past or potential law that dealt with collective bargaining. Notably, it could undo significant education reforms signed into law in 2011. It also would prevent Michigan from ever becoming a right-to-work state, which gives workers the freedom to choose whether they want to belong to a union; it would make it more...

Republicans signaled this week that they might have given up hope in two important swing states. TPM Slideshow: Romney Takes The Stage At The RNC The Romney campaign and conservative groups like Crossroads GPS have pulled TV ads in Michigan, Romney’s home state, according to the Detroit News. Nor are the campaign and super PACs running advertising in Pennsylvania, after unleashing a barrage there over the past five months. It is still possible for groups to purchase TV advertising in either state at a later date. The PollTracker Averages show President Obama ahead 48.9 percent to 45.4 percent in Michigan,...

When school begins this week, Oceana County property owners will be paying $1.02 million more a year in taxes thanks to a school district merger that was approved without a public vote. A few weeks after school ended in June, board members from the Mason-Lake Intermediate School District and the Oceana ISD agreed to a merger. Taxpayers in Oceana will now have to pay the higher millage rate assessed in Mason-Lake. According to the Oceana County treasurer, the higher millage rate will cost Oceana County property owners $150 for every $100,000 in taxable value. Residents will start paying it in...

Talk about bureaucratic red tape. Try dealing with 87 different government union health insurance plans. That was one of the headaches Lou Schimmel faced when he became emergency manager for the city of Pontiac. The city now has one plan and will save millions by consolidating, which would have been nearly impossible without the state's emergency manager law. "Every union had their own negotiated health plan with either no or low deductibles and co-pays,” said John Naglick, Pontiac's finance director. "These plans had been negotiated over the years. An employee who retired under a certain health plan expected to be...

The Protect Our Jobs ballot proposal that seeks to change the state constitution with union-friendly provisions would eliminate a big negotiation tool for public safety unions, according to a Mackinac Center for Public Policy analysis. If passed, the Protect Our Jobs Amendment would end the practice of binding arbitration. Police and firefighters can't go on strike nor would they have the right to go to an arbitrator during contractual impasses. The Mackinac Center thinks the Protect Our Jobs Amendment would end binding arbitration, which is also known as Public Act 312. Ending binding arbitration would benefit taxpayers significantly, according to...

It’s that time of year again: Back-to-school deal hunting season. Hoping to give their kids every possible advantage, millions of Michigan parents will flock to nearby retailers for new school supplies. But before loading up on notebooks, pencils and crayons, parents should remember that their local public school is required by law to supply these necessities to every student free of charge. The details are laid out in a 2011 Michigan Department of Education memo listing specifically what supplies schools must provide, including pencils, paper, crayons, scissors and glue sticks. In addition, school districts may not charge for registration or...

A recent study found that Michigan’s car insurance rates are the highest in the nation. When looked at as a percent of annual median household income, Michigan drivers spend 8 percent on car insurance, according to CarInsuranceQuote.com. The next highest state was Louisiana at 5.5 percent. Michigan’s rates as a percentage of income were nearly double that of the fifth-most expensive state, Mississippi, which came in at 4.04 percent. When looking at the median price of an annual car insurance policy, the result is the same. Michigan is No. 1 at $4,490, and by far the most expensive state for...

The state of Michigan apparently does not keep track of the afflictions of state workers collecting disability payments provided by taxpayers. According to the departments that should be overseeing the program, the state spent $42.8 million in 2011 on disability payments without knowing whether employees are disabled. If true, the state may be breaking the law. A decade ago, Michigan spent $35.5 million on disability payments. The state has 47,818 current employees in the system and 3,527 people receiving disability benefits. But when asked, multiple state agencies were unable to provide a basic list of afflictions of those receiving benefits...

Gerald McEntee had Michigan on his mind in June when he delivered his final address as president of the nation’s largest public employee union. “Our sisters and brothers in Michigan are on the front lines in the next critical battle,” McEntee told the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. He declared that the imperative was “defeating Governor Rick Snyder's anti-worker and anti-American emergency manager’s bill. These managers are local dictators who rip up union contracts.” Focusing on an emergency manager bill in one state might seem an unlikely valedictory for a legendary labor leader who has served his...

DETROIT — A man suspected of fatally shooting two men and seriously wounding two others had to turn himself in twice before Detroit police would arrest him, authorities said. Detroit police said the 36-year-old man got into an argument at a party on Saturday, retrieved a gun and opened fire. Four people were shot, and two died. The man turned himself in at a fire station about two hours later, and fire officials called police, but no officers turned up. Police said in a statement that “due to area patrol units being busy handling high priority runs, no units were...
