Microsoft and the Yahoo patent portfolio ( Software giant could be after a hidden prize ...patents )

BERKELEY, Calif. (MarketWatch) -- The latest thinking in the Silicon Valley scene regarding the Microsoft-Yahoo-Carl Icahn Saga, which is not going away, might be about some sort of killer patent owned by Yahoo. Right now financial researchers everywhere are trying to figure out what exactly the patent is. The blogosphere has been abuzz with various notions that the real reason Microsoft Corp. wants Yahoo Inc. has to do with a patent that Microsoft needs to implement its future money making philosophies. One of the hot articles with the most details regarding these possibilities is written by blogger-essayist Usman Latif, who...

When medical-device equipment gets sick

You may never think of hospitals quite the same way again, but it turns out that quite a lot of patient-care medical equipment sold these days is based on Windows. And this Windows-based equipment, whether it be cancer-care, EKG or ultrasound machines, is prone to getting hit by computer worms and viruses like any other Microsoft-based machine sitting on a corporate LAN.Hospital IT administrators want to ensure this equipment is kept up to date on security software patches in order to prevent infestation by worms that may invade hospital LANs. But as our story on this describes, patching medical devices...

AOL May Be Plan B For Microsoft, But Yahoo Still In Focus

As Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) pursuit of Internet portal Yahoo Inc. (YHOO) drags on, Wall Street analysts are increasingly speculating the software giant may be focusing on a Plan B: Tying up with internet service provider AOL. The speculation was revived on Wednesday when The Wall Street Journal reported Microsoft executives met with representatives of Time Warner Inc. (TWX), AOL's parent company, to discuss a possible union. Microsoft has reportedly been in informal discussions in recent months to explore an AOL deal, which the Redmond, Wash.-based company sees as a potential way to boost its Internet presence. The talks come against...

Battle for future of Yahoo reaches Congress (Pot-Kettle Dept.)

The war between Google and Microsoft spilled over on to Capitol Hill on Tuesday as the internet and software groups staked out their rival positions over the future of Yahoo at separate Senate and House hearings. The committee hearings, called to consider a proposed advertising alliance between Google and Yahoo that was struck last month, marked the most direct showdown yet in the political battle between the two companies. With Microsoft angling to secure a deal of its own with Yahoo, the hearings quickly turned into an argument over whether Yahoo’s users and advertisers would be better served by a...

20 things Windows 7 MUST include

Windows Vista, the OS that everyone loves to hate. Despite its enhanced security, improved CPU scheduler and excellent stability, it’s still the flawed gem in many critics’ eyes. But can Microsoft win back the XP crowd with its upcoming Windows 7 offering? The fact is, they have to. Being that gadget zone is still a fan of the Redmond, Washington, company (although we like Apple too), gadget zone contributor and computer expert, Vito Cassisi, has come up with the 20 Microsoft must do's to ensure the success of Windows 7.

Windows update leaves thousands unable to get online

A software update for the Windows operating system has left hundreds and thousands of computer users unable to access the internet. The update, known as a "patch", conflicts with another piece of software, the Zone Alarms firewall, that many people use to protect their computers from hackers and viruses. The patch, codenamed MS08-037, was designed to fix a security loophole in the way Windows handles website addresses. It was discovered that there was a weakness with the operating system that could allow hackers to re-route legitimate web pages to malicious websites instead, and leave internet users open to fraud...

(Vanity) Need advice re: Computer debugging software

In my little house we have an HP desktop and an ARCHOS 605 wifi (amongh other things) and for the longest time they worked perfectly together. Then one day they were no longer on speaking terms. Though each by itself worked out-- and checked out-- AOK. So, after some very careful investigation -- and a $$ an hour computer guy -- the problem almost certainly is a virus, or what have you. So, can anyone recommand a good de-bugging program? We just have the plain-vanilla AOL virus protection (quit snickering) and so...well...any recommandations? Thanks

Almost 30 years later, a few weeks before Bill Gates's departure from Microsoft, the group (looking better) reconvened. Bob Greenberg (center of old photo, in red sweater), then a programmer and now a tech and financial consultant, had won a photo portrait in a contest and used it to commemorate the soon-to-be disrupted group. The picture was shot in a shopping mall. ...

But it is likely only a temporary reprieve for the global software giant. A new anti-monopoly law will take effect Aug. 1 that has a loosely defined and seemingly low threshold for the government to initiate an official investigation: upon receipt of a complaint from an institution or a lone individual.

A recent report from Evans Data shows fewer than one in 10 software developers writing applications for Windows Vista this year. Eight percent. Such appreciation for history is not likely to warm the cockles of Microsoft's heart, especially when Linux is getting lots of love from developers (13 percent writing apps for it this year and 15.5 percent in 2009).
