Comparing VA/Obamacare Veteran’s Insights into Government Run Healthcare and the Implications of Obamacare on Everyone Else You cannot line each system up and make perfect comparisons but you can delineate basic failures within the V.A. system, and many other government programs, and come to the clear conclusion that setting ourselves down this path of dependency on government will do nothing but increase deficits and debt, while making decent free market healthcare even more expensive to get access to.

In an off line conversation with my FReeper lady friend, floralamiss, she mentioned to me that Joe Dimaggio had been her father's PT instructor during WWII. I indicated that my dad had served with Lt. George Steinbrenner at Lockbourne AFB in the 50's. When I was an ROTC Cadet, I did my advanced camp at Ft. Bragg, and then went on CTLT in Germany with Shawn Mullins. Just curious how many other FReepers got to meet/know/serve with folks that later achieved some degree of fame (or notoriety) while in the military. Thought it might be a fun conversation topic for...

Russian plane hit side of steep volcano- no survivors Rescuers found shattered wreckage earlier today of the Russian-made Sukhoi Superjet 100 that hit the side of an Indonesian volcano at full-speed during a sales demonstration flight- all 45 people on board were feared dead. "So far we haven't found any survivors, but we are still searching," he said as teams of soldiers, police and volunteers continued to troop up the slopes. The spot is basically unreachable on foot. so evidence and bodies are being placed in nets/hammocks and raised by helicopters from the Indonesian Air Force. The Sukhoi Superjet...

Ok,a co-worker is looking to join the USAF. He called the recruiter and after answering a few "get to know you questions" he then asked where he went to high school. My buddy replied he was home schooled and has a High School diploma thru PA homeschool. The recruiter told him that was a problem because the military doesnt take homeschooled grads. Now, this guy has a degree from a state college and is smart. I have never heard of such a thing. My question is has anyone heard of this and what recourse does he have. Thanks in advance

Just what they didn't need... Sukhoi SuperJet 100 After $1.4B in development, successful presentation/flights at the 2011 Farnborough Air show, and even Russian domestic commercial service, the Sukhoi SuperJet 100 seemed to be moving along towards attaining the respect and cash-generating exports Putin was looking for when the Kremlin orchestrated Sukhoi's collaboration with Italy's Finmeccanica and other foreign suppliers (including Boeing). The $32M plane features a number of firsts for a Russian commercial airliner, such as fly-by-wire technology and even a stunning Pininfarina-designed business-class. Benjamin Netanyahu is congratulated by former Israeli President Zalman Shazar during a ceremony honoring the elite commandos who rescued the hostages from the Sabena Flight 571. On May 8th 1972 -forty years ago today- the Israeli government faced a volatile hostage situation at Lod Airport (now Ben Gurion) outside Tel Aviv.  Belgian-flagged Sabena flight 571 had departed smoothly from Vienna, yet twenty minutes after takeoff two male and two female Black September terrorists (of '72 Munich Olympics massacre fame) had hijacked the plane. "When they transition back into the community we don't have the problem [of recidivism.]" Darr went on to say, true crime prevention is having people not commit the same offense or crimes over and over again. Charging that NATO’s anti-missile system poses a threat to its “strategic flexibility,” Moscow says it reserves the right to initiate a preemptive attack. Russian Chief of General Staff Nikolai Makarov says he isn’t buying the United States’ contention that the system is purely defensive in nature. “The Americans say that their anti-missiles would only be deployed against incoming missiles,” Makarov observed. “But this in itself is offensive. Russia’s security may require a surprise first strike. American efforts to blunt such an option would fundamentally undermine our strategic planning.” Makarov’s remarks were described as “incredibly poorly timed” by the Obama Administration....

Democrat Elizabeth Warren, candidate for the Massachusetts senate seat now held by Republican Scott Brown, saw her campaign hit rough going over her claimed Native American ancestry. Not only is the highly diluted nature of her claim (by her own account, she is one-thirty-second Native American) dogging her, but her boast that her great-great-great grandfather killed and scalped General Custer at the Battle of the Little Big Horn in 1876 hasn’t gone over as well as she had hoped. Warren speculated that the negative reaction stems from sexism. “When Senator Kerry cut the ears off of the Viet Cong he...

Regardless of whether or not you are a soldier in the military or a federal agent, your actions are a reflection of your leadership.  Soldiers in a military unit will be squared away if they have good leadership. The leadership sets the tone for the entire unit. If soldiers in a unit know that their commander will nail them to the wall for not following the standards then the soldiers of that unit will generally be well trained, display professionalism and follow the standards. Why? Because regardless of their personal beliefs or morals, they know that this is what the...

It’s been five weeks since the Obama administration granted Egypt its full $1.3 billion in annual military aid despite its government’s failure to meet conditions set by Congress for advancing democracy. In granting a waiver on national security grounds, administration officials argued that continuing the funding was more likely to encourage cooperation with the United States and progress on human rights than a cutoff would. As it turns out, the administration was wrong. In a number of tangible ways, U.S.-Egyptian relations and the military’s treatment of civil society have deteriorated since the waiver was issued March 23. The threat to...

There is a data analysis discipline used in business settings and other operational applications that classifies inconsistencies, discrepancies and departures from the operational or situational ideal. Examples of such inconsistencies are things such as undated reports, event descriptions which alter the sequence of events and reports that distort the importance of one thing relative to others in its context. One of the harder ones to spot is the omitted datum – information that ought to be there that isn’t. This classification has a corollary: the incorrectly included datum, information that shouldn’t be there, but nonetheless is. Like UN vehicles in...

The problem with Iran’s enrichment facilities has become more acute in recent years. When the West refused to supply 20%-enriched uranium for the small Tehran Research Reactor, where the Iranians produce medical isotopes, Iranian nuclear experts went ahead in June 2010 and fed their 5%-enriched uranium into the centrifuges to produce 20%-enriched uranium, by themselves. With a stockpile of 20%-enriched uranium, the Iranians would cut by more than half the time they needed to take the next enrichment step to weapons-grade uranium.

Women to attend Marines' infantry school [Updated at 1:04 p.m. ET] The U.S. Marine Corps plans to allow a yet-undetermined number of female volunteers to enroll in the school that trains its infantry combat officers, the Marine Corps Times has reported. The plan to open the Infantry Officers Course to women is part of the service's effort to determine which additional jobs may be open to women in the future, Gen. Joseph Dunford, the Marines' assistant commandant, told the Marine Corps Times. "We are in the process right now of soliciting volunteers," Dunford told the Times for a story published...

Brass Ceiling Cracking? By MARK THOMPSON | @MarkThompson_DC | April 19, 2012 | MARINE PHOTO / LANCE CPL. JOSHUA B. YOUNG Female Marines learn to use the M-240 machine gun in California before heading to Afghanistan The Marine Corps is planning to let women enroll in its school that trains infantry combat officers. It’s not the same as letting women serve in front-line combat units, but it’s definitely a step in that direction. A top Marine officer says an undetermined number of female volunteers will be allowed to attend the Infantry Officers Course at Quantico, Va., as part of an...

Well....dead enemy. Like Joe Darby (of Abu Ghraib fame), an anonymous soldier took 18 sensitive photos and "leaked" them to the press. Specifically, to the LA Times. The photos have emerged at a particularly sensitive moment for U.S.-Afghan relations. In January, a video appeared on the Internet showing four U.S. Marines urinating on Afghan corpses. In February, the inadvertent burning of copies of the Koran at a U.S. base triggered riots that left 30 dead and led to the deaths of six Americans. In March, a U.S. Army sergeant went on a nighttime shooting rampage in two Afghan villages, killing...

I am a child survivor, and went through the destruction of a defenseless people by an enemy called Nazism. Now, the blood of Israel flows in its streets. A second wave of Nazism breaks over us. And I hear phrases of blame like "cycles of violence," "ending the occupation," as if something we were doing, rather than our very existence were responsible for attacks against us. I hear lies, distortions, self-serving versions of history. Occupation? Years ago when there was no occupation, what did they do? They murdered our athletes at the Olympics; they hijacked planes; they pushed a man...

I have my own concern about lack of remorse based on a recent Guardian Comment is Free article written by an Iraq War veteran who, as free as he walks, insists that what he did in Fallujah was ‘terrorism’ and writes openly in the Guardian, “I, too, support the right of Muslims to defend themselves against US troops, even if that means they have to kill them.” This shocking statement from Ross Caputi is the kind of dangerous nonsense from someone tied up with the Stop The War Coalition, who recently introduced Noam Chomsky at an event and who seems...

Republicans gone missin’ again – in 2010 they received an injection of new blood energetic men and women ready to “take back our Country. But, the Old Republican Establishment gave them a grand welcome and shot them in the foot every time they stepped forward with a substantial idea that would strengthen our Nation’s foundation. What the freshmen didn’t know is the Old Republican Establishment has been around for a long time and they’re happy basking in the sun, playing golf and living high on the hog off of taxpayer’s money. They actually black balled the freshman stars like Paul...

I cannot think of a better community organizer than our founding President George Washington. His charge to organize thousands of non professional soldiers to fight a war against the well trained and well equipped Brit Redcoats had to be at least as difficult as President Obama's tireless efforts to round up fellow travelers on the south side of Chicago to harass banks for not lending to people who could not repay loans. Although, we know nothing about Obama's early financing, except that it probably was gifted to him by a sheik, or two, George Washington married into money through his...

The Cold War is fading like a twinkle in the eye of history, but the transition from recent memory to textbook lessons has gone largely unnoticed. But every once in a while, we receive a reminder about exactly how much the world has changed. I. A Farewell to Nuclear Arms? Take the recent report by Thomas D’Agostino, the undersecretary for nuclear security and the administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA). He said that the number of nuclear weapons experts at the U.S. Department of Defense with experience designing or testing nuclear weapons today numbers in the low teens....

Over the weekend begininng Saturday, April 7th, 2012, myself and my wife were down in southern California, in San Diego. We were there for my daughter's wedding on Monday, April 9th, in Coronado, California on the beach at the Hotel del Coronado. Beautiful setting, but also the home of the Naval Base Coranado and a lot of the Amphibios Warfare Command on the West Coast. Across the strait was the anchorage for many of the vessels. We took some time to visit and photograph the vessesl we could see, and there were a lot of them, a real delight...

The alleged sexcapades by several Secret Service agents while in Colombia in service to President Barack Obama may not just be an embarassment for their country; rather, the objects of their affections may have been exploited against their will, and the investigation into the debaucherous debacle necessarily must include the circumstances by which the involved women found themselves in the meat market. Legal prostitution in Colombia and other countries has generated a thriving sex tourism industry, and in meeting supply for the demand many women find themselves enslaved in the trade. For example, in Spain where prostitution is legal an...

The US Military is currently seeking a large amount of potassium iodide, this according to a listing on the FBO.gov website by the Defense Logistics Agency. In the listing it is made clear that they want to be ready in the event of nuclear fallout which has lead many to speculate that this could be in response to the Fukushima nuclear disaster or perhaps in anticipation for an attack on an active Iranian nuclear facility. The DLA is apparently looking for upwards of 400,000 dollars worth of the thyroid protecting tablets at a time when many government officials have openly...
