McCaskill feeling some frustration in Senate

WASHINGTON — Sen. Claire McCaskill had questions for the five Pentagon and State Department officials at a table in front of her about why the United States spent $250 million on a power plant in Afghanistan that doesn't work and costs $1 million a month to guard. "What's the problem here? Have the contractors been held accountable?" McCaskill asked in a recent hearing, a note of impatience in her voice. She was told that the plant was operating now but that security remained a problem. Still, McCaskill was dissatisfied, much like her view toward the Senate these days. Midway through...

KC school district has about 1,000 employees too many, official says

After a stormy summer in which the Kansas City School District shed more than 500 employees, its remade human resources department faces another huge task. With about 3,300 employees, the district still has about 1,000 more people than most districts with enrollments of about 17,000 students, said Steve Harris, the new assistant superintendent for human resources. “We’re way out of sync,” Harris said. “We want to try to get as close as we can for the next school year.”

Missouri Lawmakers Want to Further Restrict Pseudoephedrine Access

Amid a national push to make health care cheaper and simpler, Missouri is considering legislation that intentionally makes it more cumbersome. State lawmakers have filed bills that would require a doctor's prescription to get certain cold and allergy medications that currently can be bought over the counter. The idea is to make it harder to produce methamphetamine by restricting the key ingredient pseudoephedrine. Missouri's efforts to further limit access to the medicine come as officials are trying to expand access to health care across the country.

Missouri's arresting developments

Our out-of-touch and out-of-control federal government generates most of our political grumblings. Washington is the government furthest away, and takes the biggest bite out of our wallets — to simultaneously wreak the most economic havoc through their complex matrix of subsidies, regulations and mandates. Yet, the sort of arrogance, corruption and political bullying we’ve come to expect in national politics, has now reached Everytown, USA. St. Louis, Missouri, to be specific. Last week, Gustavo Rendon was arrested in broad daylight — right in front of his two boys. One St. Louis policeman threatened that his sons would be sent into...
