Jim Robinson has created and maintains a huge treasure trove of news and information here at FreeRepublic.com. He gladly shares it with us Freepers and the rest of the world (a.k.a. - lurkers). And thanks to Jim and staff, FreeRepublic has a fantastic search engine (far surpassing Google), IMHO, due to the plethora of relevant news and information from around the world posted by us Freepers. For lack of a better description, I would classify FreeRepublic as a huge historical news and information database thanks to all of the postings and comments of Freepers (and a few disrupters - ZOT!!)....

That is a question many have asked - and it deserves some straight answers, removing rumor and setting the record straight about moderators, what they do, and why. This is not the expose some might hope the title promises, but it will tell you much you did not know, and much you need to know. Up front, I’ll tell you that I am merely the first moderator to serve. Above that I am the least of the moderators in many ways, as all others serve FreeRepublic in stellar ways I could not hope to match. I serve as their trainer ...
  • "Impostors!" - the latest accusation trend.

It appears the latest popular way to discredit those who publish opposing views on forums is to accuse them of being impostors, not really who they claim to be, the same person posting under several names, as though no two people could possibly share the same opinions. This has happened on a variety of sites on the internet. Moderators find it an easy way of doing away with people they don't like who stay within the rules. Whether it is on a TV forum, or a political forum, the trend seems to be the same. TV Heaven, a while back,...

WASHINGTON (AP) - Jim Lehrer, host of PBS's ``News Hour,'' will be a moderator for the presidential debates, but unlike past election years, he will divide the work with ABC's Charlie Gibson and CBS's Bob Schieffer. The Commission on Presidential Debates announced its selection of the three Friday, along with the choice of Gwen Ifill, a ``News Hour'' correspondent and moderator of PBS' ``Washington Week,'' as moderator for the debate between Vice President Dick Cheney and Democratic Sen. John Edwards

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use. OKLAHOMA CITY - About 100 workers who moderate AOL's message boards and screen for objectionable online content will be laid off by the end of March, AOL spokesman Nicholas Graham said. The jobs of the Community Action Team will be moved to other America Online call centers, and possibly overseas, Graham said Wednesday. The layoffs will leave AOL with about 1,000 people at its Oklahoma City call center. "This is a planned part of our ongoing efforts to adjust AOL's member services organization to more closely align with our business goals...

Good morning.Earlier this morning, a rather disgusting piece of garbage was posted. Many good Freepers hit abuse on it (38 reports!) and many others pinged the admin and sidebar moderators to it. I thank you for doing so.I apologize on behalf of Free Republic for that trash not being dealt with earlier. As it happens, the user posted it when it just so happened that no moderators were online. We are volunteers and it is unusual when there is not a moderator online, but it does happen occasionally. This was one of those times.Sincerely,Admin Moderator
