The infamous Swedish Moose Test can make or break sales in certain parts of the world. It aims to re-create what could happen if a moose suddenly appeared in your path, and you needed to make an emergency maneuver. We’ve already seen this sort of thing once before, but in case you missed it the first time, here’s another reminder of why it’s so important. It’s mainly because moose tend to be so large that they crush the car, imperiling the lives of the human occupants inside. And also, the poor moose is dead. There was a child in the...

Every dog has its day. For Terry Kasper’s mixed lab, Ella, that day came early one May morning. “I thought my dog had an upset stomach, so about two in the morning I took her outside,” said Kasper outside his South Anchorage home Thursday afternoon. Lee Kantar lost two moose calves this past weekend. They are just a few among many calves that did not survive their first year in the forests of Maine. Kantar, a moose biologist for the state’s Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, has only been tracking calves for a few years but early death is a trend he and others can see across the animal's southern range, which stretches through the northern U.S. and Canada. Scientists speculate that young and adult moose alike are plagued by new diseases and parasites. Brain worm and winter ticks, for example, are both worsening...

Last week, 117 "members of the Republican national security community" signed an open letter condemning Donald Trump. It made me think the bellicose billionaire, the front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, is not quite as bad as I thought. "His vision of American influence and power in the world is wildly inconsistent and unmoored in principle," the letter complains. "He swings from isolationism to military adventurism within the space of one sentence." Although there is some truth to that critique, an inconsistent skepticism of foreign intervention is better than none at all. That is why I have trouble agreeing with...

The stakes in 2016 are huge and the party is fractured. The rhetoric reflects a Trump Derangement Syndrome in which Trump is either a monster or a savior, instead of a politician. On the left, Bush Derangement Syndrome expressed itself in the conviction that he was unalterably and uniquely worse than every other president and would get around to declaring martial law and ruling forever. The danger of exaggeration is that previously unacceptable views suddenly become acceptable. Bush Derangement Syndrome made it acceptable for Democrats to descend into open treason by making common cause with Saddam Hussein, the Sunni terrorist...

Eureka! After about a century of research, Swiss scientists have finally cracked the mystery of the holes in Swiss cheese. Despite what you may have been told as a child, they are not caused by mice nibbling away inside cheese wheels. Experts from Agroscope, a state centre for agricultural research, said the phenomenon—which marks famous Swiss cheeses such as Emmental and Appenzell—was caused by tiny bits of hay present in the milk and not bacteria as previously thought. They found that the mystery holes in such cheeses became smaller or disappeared when milk used for cheese-making was extracted using modern...

DULUTH, Minn. -- Minnesota wildlife researchers will keep trying to collar and study newborn moose calves in 2015 even though things haven't gone well during the first two years of the effort. Last May and June, researchers put GPS collars on 25 calves just hours after they were born. But 19 of them either were abandoned by their mothers and had to be rescued, or their collars fell off or stopped working, leaving only six calves to be studied. By August, those six had been eaten by predators, mostly wolves. "It's frustrating. But we need to persevere," said Glenn DelGiudice,...

A moose caught in an avalanche in Hatcher Pass may have three passing snowmachiners to thank for making it into the new year. The men dug the moose -- a young cow, they think -- out of the snow, apparently unharmed, after it was caught in an avalanche Dec. 28. One of the men, Marty Mobley, 44, said the moose probably caused the slide that swallowed it and that without the group's help, it would not have survived. "There was just enough of its snout sticking above the snow that it could breathe," Mobley said. Mobley said he and friends...

The Swedish hunting association runs a project to encourage young asylum-seekers to learn about hunting, a move which has proved controversial among some far right groups. "These young people have no connection to life in the Swedish outdoors and how we look at nature, such as the right of public access. Many come from countries where it is plain dangerous to be out in the nature," said Magnus Rydholm at the Swedish Association for Hunting and Wildlife Management (Svenska JÀgareförbundet). The project has been running for six years and has never been more more popular with some 200-300 young people...
