Volunteers working for tea party challenger Chris McDaniel in Mississippi say they have already found 20 percent of the invalid double-votes they need to cancel Sen. Thad Cochran’s business-funded runoff victory. “We’re finished with Hinds County, and we’re up to 1,500” invalid votes, said Noel Fritsch, Daniel’s press aide. That’s critical because McDaniel can force another runoff if he can find more invalid votes than Cochran’s roughly 7,000-vote margin-of-victory on June 24. Votes are invalidated if voters cast ballots in both the Democrats’ June 3 primary and the GOP’s run-off on June 24. However, McDaniel can also force another election...

ACKSON, Miss. - The runoff in the U.S. Senate primary between Thad Cochran and Chris McDaniel may be over, but the drama is reaching a fever pitch one week after ballots were cast across Mississippi. Deputies from the Hinds County Sheriff's Department are outside of GOP headquarters in Jackson today, while Republican leaders meet to talk about voting irregularities as claimed by the McDaniel campaign. We are told deputies are checking the identification of anyone wishing to enter the building. In addition, State Senator Michael Watson tells WJTV News Channel 12 that the McDaniel camp has found 3,300 "irregular votes"...

Nothing in life is free. And now that Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) was able to narrowly beat his Tea Party rival, due to thousands of black Democrats who crossed party lines to vote in the GOP primary runoff, his new constituency is looking to cash in on their influence. In their minds, Cochran, who is in line to chair the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee if Republicans take back the Senate, is now a part of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC)--and should vote like a CBC member. Incumbent Republican Senator Thad Cochran’s successful game plan, which drove his run-off victory over Tea Party challenger Chris McDaniel for Mississippi’s Republican Senate nomination, was unconventional. But most incredible was the success of this game plan – to reach out to liberal black churches and get Democrat black voters to turn out and vote for Cochran – despite being executed in broad daylight. Soon after Cochran lost to McDaniel in the primary, necessitating a run-off because McDaniel fell short of getting 50 percent of the vote, papers reported the intent of Cochran’s team to turn out black Democrats to overcome...

Too far, and their tactics are likely to leave permanent scars in a civil war with Tea Party forces that are out of all proportion to the importance the establishment placed on saving one 76-year-old senator’s ability to please Washington’s K Street lobbying interests. “This is a win for the establishment, but it’s a win with an asterisk, because it’s so tainted that it might be one of those things where they’re going to be sorry they ever won the runoff in Mississippi,” Craig...

Coming into Tuesday's runoff election in Mississippi, polling suggested that incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran was at a major disadvantage. As we noted, there was a big question mark hanging over any predictions because it wasn't clear what turnout would look like.In part, that was because the Cochran campaign was explicitly targeting black voters to come out to vote, despite those voters usually voting Democratic. Now, of course, we know what happened. Counties with a higher black population voted more heavily.

A BAD NIGHT FOR DEMOCRATS If you can divine a national trend from a runoff election in Mississippi, be our guest. But rather than pondering the motives of 3,188 Mississippi voters who made the difference in a bitter, hyper-local election, there’s a more useful consideration today. What’s at stake nationally this year is control of the U.S. Senate, and Republican chances of taking the majority went up significantly Tuesday night. [During New York Democratic Rep. With Cochran forced into a runoff fight against an aggressive and energetic challenger, a dark mood shadowed his backers in Washington and Mississippi.

I was wrong. I thought for sure the NRSC and Mississippi’s GOP establishment would back off of McDaniel given that he’s the favorite in the runoff. Cochran might keep campaigning, I figured, but it would be a strictly positive campaign for the next few weeks, probably with no attack on McDaniel harsher than the fact that he’s inexperienced. At a minimum, they’d stay away from blaming him for that nasty harassment of Cochran’s wife inside her nursing home. Why frag a guy whom you’ll probably be fighting behind next month? As I say, I was wrong. After months of milquetoast...

Tea Party-backed State Sen. Chris McDaniel has taken a slight lead — within the margin of error — in a new poll from Chism Strategies over 42-year incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS). The survey's results, announced on Saturday, show McDaniel with a 50.6 percent to 47.6 percent lead over Cochran, with 1.8 percent undecided. The survey was conducted on Thursday — two days after McDaniel bested Cochran in the popular vote with neither candidate topping 50 percent, forcing the race into a runoff — and it polled 832 likely GOP voters. The poll’s margin of error was 3.3 percent, putting...

National Republicans find themselves in a political jam over the looming Senate runoff in Mississippi, with some establishment operatives now wishing that tea party challenger Chris McDaniel had just won outright or that six-term incumbent Thad Cochran hadn’t run at all. The National Republican Senatorial Committee is in the most uncomfortable spot, as the top institutional defender of incumbents. It is pledging its full support to Cochran while also having to grapple with the reality that McDaniel, who might well win the nomination, is a political figure it can’t control, and giving Democrats reason to dream about a seat in...
  • MCDANIEL, COCHRAN NECK-AND-NECK

    06/03/2014 9:16:12 PM PDT · by kingattax · 43 replies
Incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) and state senator Chris McDaniel are in an epic nail-biter, only a few thousand votes apart with 94.5 percent reporting. McDaniel is at 49.4 percent and Cochran 49.0 percent. The close margin raises the possibility of a runoff election if neither candidate crosses 50 percent. Third party candidate Thomas Carey is at about 1.6 percent. CNN reporter Dana Bash reported Cochran aides were predicting the best outcome for Cochran would be a runoff.

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi —With final votes still being counted, Tea Party-backed state Sen. Chris McDaniel is poised to force a runoff against 42-year incumbent Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) in the GOP primary here, likely prompting a three-week dash to the finish of an epic race between conservatives and the GOP Establishment. "Whether it's tomorrow or whether it's three weeks from now we will be victorious,” McDaniel said during a speech to supporters here around 11:30 p.m. CT. Cochran did not plan to address his campaign rally, according to NBC reporter Kasie Hunt. With 97.9 percent of precincts reporting, McDaniel was up...
