  • One More Reason to Detest Quentin Tarantino

That guitar he had destroyed for his movie The Hateful Eight was made in 1870. It was on loan from the Martin Guitar Museum. Tarantino left the clip in the movie because he liked the horrified reaction of Jennifer Jason Leigh, who realized at the time that it was not a replica but a priceless antique getting smashed. Everyone on the set was distraught except Tarantino, who reportedly smiled: The head of the museum was furious when he found out the guitar had been wrecked not in a random accident, but because Tarantino had failed to tell Kurt Russell about...

As this nation embraces our quadrennial presidential election cycle we should be reminded of the incredible heroism of our nation's ancestors. We should be grateful for their courage, their sacrifice, their valor and never forget their memories. The men and women who have left behind blood, sweat, tears, lives and limbs so we may continue to embark on the great American experiment. Some may say our nation's best days are behind us. And why she should listen to Killer Mike. At the the Iowa Democratic forum on Monday night, Hillary Clinton took one of the easiest questions lobbed her way -- Who is your favorite president? -- and blasted it right into the back of her own goal. She did fine with the first part, naming Abraham Lincoln, but then dipped into the history of Reconstruction, bemoaning the vengeful way in which the North targeted the South after Lincoln's assassination. You know, he was willing to reconcile and forgive. And I don't know what our country might have been like had he...

I'm A Lonesome Polecat - Seven Brides for Seven Brothershttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9-jbBbjLUc Lyricist Johnny Mercer said that the musical numbers were written at Kidd's behest, as an example "of how a songwriter sometimes has to take his cue from his collaborators." For example, Kidd explained to Mercer and dePaul his conception of the "Lonesome Polecat" number, the lament of the brothers for the women, and the two worked out the music and lyrics. To perform the electrifying dance numbers and grueling action sequences, choreographer Michael Kidd wanted dancers to portray all six of Adam Pontipee's rough and tumble brothers. Kidd said...

That said, Greek music is fascinating from Turkish-dominated lands before the Armenian incident. Other Greek music shows a pronounced Arabic sense, why is this? I'm not a musicologist, however, it seems indisputable that a certain vocal tendency in women's singing among the descendants of the former Asia-Minor, Greek lands, centered perhaps around Smyrna, uses a kind of high, warbling, expressive vocal sound,...

The Sherlock Holmes series by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is enjoyable fiction that has millions of fans across the world over a hundred years. It glorifies reason, logic, and observation of facts. I do not consider myself a fan, but have enjoyed reading several of the novels and short stories. The BBC has created a successful television series featuring the Holmes and Watson characters in a modern setting. I have seen one of those episodes, and it did not seem too bad, though the focus on Holmes as a drug addict was a bit grotesque. The new movie is...

Major and Minor are two of seven modes. The scale in this song uses an Ab in the key of G-minor, (that's imprecise, but the best way we can think of it). The flat-2 note in the III mode can be heard in traditional Catholic Church music (think Holy Modal Rounders); every week I actually sing this mode in the Lord Have Mercy (Kyrie Eleison in Greek), in Church called the Phrygian mode. The song composer, Flatbush Waltz, is mandolinist Andy Statman.
