Justin Bieber is a suspect in a criminal battery ... law enforcement sources tell TMZ. Justin was in Calabasas, where he lives, just after noon Sunday at a mall called The Commons. A paparazzo attempted to take Justin's picture and, according to law enforcement, some sort of physical altercation erupted between Justin and the camera guy. The photog called 911, and when cops arrived Justin and GF Selena Gomez had already split. Risky. Dangerous. S cary. A way to break the rules. We’re not talking about failing to study for your final math test or disobeying your parents. We’re talking about a type of music called jazz. Some people say that jazz is America’s only true art form. That’s because it began here, hundreds of years ago, in the fields where black people worked as slaves and made up songs to pass time, to express themselves and to keep alive the culture and traditions of their African homelands. It wasn’t called jazz then, but the way the slaves were playing and singing...

This band is pretty cool (and will, I predict, become extremely popular). It uses a blend of South African cultural icons with a mocking futuristic/horror parody of American Rap music. It plays off the real bad language and immaturity of American Rap in a way that many of the band’s fans probably don’t catch (i.e. they just think it’s cool, not getting the satire). The band, Die Antwoord, is the founder/inventor in South Africa of a musical movement called Zef (which is a kind of Boer redneck segment of society, I guess, named for lower middle class folks who used...

Thirty-three years ago, a science-fiction thriller with the memorable tag-line, “In space, no one can hear you scream” was released with little advance publicity and few expectations. Alien, which was only director Ridley Scott’s second film, became an instant classic for its revolutionary depiction of a future where corporations used grimy space “truckers” in their quest for interplanetary profits and for its blood-curdling thrills. The film, which cost £5 million to make, went on to gross £85 million worldwide and spawned a media storm of comic books, video games and toys, as well as three sequels and two prequel films....

Hark all ye lovely saints above Just a little musical relaxation for a Friday afternoon. I heard this for the first time a couple of days ago and was enchanted. After the repeat of the first verse, Mr. Weelkes slides through a dissonance into a minor key, then dashes back to major and back to the dominant. Not only is it a musical tour-de-force, it's gorgeous. Enjoy!

Back in March, NBC News teamed up with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to launch Hiring Our Heroes, an initiative to get veterans back into the workforce. Among the many organizations to step forward and pledge to hire vets and military spouses was the rock back KISS. KISS's job opening was for a roadie to work their upcoming summer tour with Motley Crue, and more than 1,900 hopefuls applied. And this morning on the plaza, The Demon himself, Gene Simmons was on hand to give veteran Paul Jordan a big surprise: He had been chosen to the new KISS roadie!...

There is an old proverb that goes “Play the piano daily and stay sane.” For me, the main word of this proverb is daily. Playing the piano daily means inevitable accomplishment, and, without a sense of accomplishment, life is an impoverished journey. Machines have taken us away from our hands. In his last days, Rachmaninoff continually practiced a composition he never performed. One of his last statements was: “Farewell, my dear hands.” Today, we are starved for a deep contact with our hands. The poet Edward Dahlberg felt “our hands are already very stupid and morose. What can we do...

This year’s “American Idol” is Phillip Phillips, the 20-year old from Leesburg, Georgia, who seemed to have had a lock on the title at, well, hello. He’s been compared to Dave Matthews and some critics have said he had the advantage of a female-voting-base, but his performance of “We’ve Got Tonight” last week, and “Home” last night proved his voice and talent as an artist might have a little something to do with it as well. It was a star-studded and sequin-heavy finale at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles with performances by Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez, John Fogerty, Chaka Khan...

They don't make 'em like they used to -- at least according to the guy who played James Bond in 1969, who's pissed the new Bond film has axed 007's signature martini ... in favor of a corporate-sponsored beer.

Katie Couric has extended an open invitation to Sarah Palin to guest on her forthcoming daytime talk show, "Katie." "She has an open invitation to come talk to me," Couric said while previewing "Katie" in Orlando yesterday. "I'm not sure she'd be interested but she'd certainly be welcome. She's a fascinating figure not only on the political scene but in popular culture."

Without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, the man in the tuxedo with the shaken-not-stirred martini (or maybe it's a Heineken?) is back: James Bond has returned with the first official teaser trailer for "Skyfall," his first big-screen adventure since 2008's "Quantum of Solace."

know, I know. I haven’t kept up with the James Bond series I started last year for Big Hollywood. I had to take a hiatus because I just couldn’t face the Horrendous Trifecta listed below and lose six hours of my life in the process. I finally gave in.

On one of the many days Leo Dunson wanted to die, the Iraq veteran put a gun to his temple and pulled the trigger. The loaded weapon misfired. For the troubled former soldier, it was another inexplicable failure, like his divorce or inability to make friends after returning from the war. In a Las Vegas recording studio, Dunson rapped about his life: "What's wrong with me? Got PTSD. These pills ain't working, man, I still can't think." One in six Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder in 2011, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs. Some...

I write this column from the Cannes Film Festival, although it is not about Cannes. But this year's 65th anniversary poster for the festival features an iconic photograph of Marilyn Monroe blowing out a birthday candle with the most sensuous lips in human history. That got me thinking about whose celebrity survives after death and in what manner. You could argue Monroe survives only as a morbid tragedy -- and also for her smoldering sexuality that still stirs the imagination from inside the frames of the photographs that helped make her famous. Her films? She contributed several remarkable performances despite...

There are likely more than 10 things you don’t know about the Rat Pack, but the History Channel has whittled the list to a mere 10-pack and this week aired a special episode of the series “10 Things You Don’t Know About” centering on the fabled performers who first instilled swagger in Vegas. Several weeks ago, I was asked to contribute to this project to elaborate on the 10 pieces of triviata unearthed by History Channel producers. David G. I dare you to watch this without crying. They do so much and heaven has plenty of them already. I just pray that the continuing war with the badly deceived is won much quicker than it has been going so far. Ultimately, real Christianity will need to replace the false religion of Islam for this war on terror to finally cease. Jesus will probably have to finish the job himself.

Mick Jagger will close out this season of NBC's "Saturday Night Live" as both host and, along with Foo Fighters and Arcade Fire, musical guest. He does so at a moment when his professional reputation is not exactly at its high water mark.[snip] I will take the admixture of flops and gems that Late Jagger yields over what I'm getting from Late Richards — which is not much of anything.

Lloyd Brevett helped create an identifiably Jamaican sound Jamaican double bassist Lloyd Brevett, whose band The Skatalites pioneered ska music and paved the way for reggae, has died at the age of 80. The Skatalites formed in 1964 and combined jazz, R&B and mento to create ska and take a Jamaican sound around the world for the first time. Their songs included The Guns of Navarone and they backed acts including The Wailers and Prince Buster. Brevett suffered a stroke in March, two weeks after his son was murdered. Thirty two-year-old Okine was shot outside the family's home in Kingston...

On the afternoon of May 12, just six days before his 89th birthday, Perry Como fell asleep in an easy chair in the master bedroom of his three-story hillside home in Florida's Jupiter Inlet Colony. The singer, who had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease for some years, never woke up. "He just passed away," says a close friend. "It was very gentle, very quiet." That was as it should have been, for Como had built a legend on his cozy, comforting persona. Rising to fame in the early '40s as a crooner, he sold more than 100 million records, including...

Los Angeles (CNN) -- The remaining plaintiff in the sexual battery lawsuit against John Travolta fired his lawyer, but the case could continue with another lawyer and another court, two lawyers told CNN on Thursday. Gloria Allred confirmed Thursday that the plaintiff known as John Doe #2 has hired her to represent him and possibly file a new legal action against the actor. "We believe that the lawsuit should be filed in another court and, therefore, the lawsuit that was on file was dismissed without prejudice," she told CNN. "We will be conferring with our client regarding what will happen...

As a registered non-dom he is legally entitled to avoid income and capital gains tax on international earnings.</p>

Chuck Brown, the gravelly voiced bandleader who capitalized on funk’s percussive pulse to create go-go, the genre of music that has soundtracked life in black Washington for more than three decades, died May 16 at the Johns Hopkins University hospital in Baltimore. He was 75. The death was confirmed by his manager, Tom Goldfogle. Mr. Brown had been hospitalized for pneumonia. Known as the “Godfather of Go-Go,” the performer, singer, guitarist and songwriter developed his commanding brand of funk in the mid-1970s to compete with the dominance of disco. Like a DJ blending records, Mr. Brown used nonstop percussion to...

LOS ANGELES – Inspired by the naval war-based board game of the same name, “Battleship” the movie is coming to a theater near you this week, and leading lady Brooklyn Decker hopes it does more than just entertain. “We actually used lots of real military service men and women in the film,” she told FOX411’s Pop Tarts column. “We used active and wounded military as well as veterans that have fought over the years, so there is a lot of history to it and this adds a lot of value to the movie. Nancy Sinatra Uses Twitter to Portray the Pain of Being Shut Out of Her Father's Last Hours Twitter is a social phenomenon. In short, 140-word snippets, people make announcements, express opinions, answer questions and talk about their everyday existence for the world to see. Then, every once in awhile, a series of Tweets takes on a life of it's own, allowing the writer to talk about a very personal experience and carry on a conversation with their friends or (in this case) fans, revealing a new dimension to what may or may not be an already known story. While it...

It's no secret famed Rat Packer Dean Martin is still about as cool as it gets, so it only makes sense he would choose a vehicle as cool and unique as a 1962 Ghia L6.4 as a mode of transportation.
