Da Qing is a member of the cat tribe and is 10,000 years old. He's currently the Deputy Chief of the Special Investigations Division (SID) and helps keep the peace on a planet between three different groups. I just couldn't resist this song. Shows my age.

About three days ago I discovered the 40 episodes of Guardian, a Chinese drama on YouTube with English captions. I'm starting my 2nd go-round. Absolutely compelling. If you ever read the Judge Dee mysteries, this has a lot in common. A buddy show that includes the supernatural and emphasizes family love, loyalty and self-sacrifice. Set on an alien world that's been at peace for 10,000 years but that peace is about to stop. The buddies are a superman-like character with an everyday identity of university prof, and the chief of special investigations. My first music video in this fandom.

Bright and shiny new art video. In 1881, Tsar Alexander II was fatally wounded in St Petersburg by political nihilists. In 1883, his son, Alexander III, began construction of this privately funded Russian Orthodox church over the place where his father was assassinated. "On Spilled Blood" refers to that murder. The church was completed in 1907, under Tsar Nicholas II. Today it's a museum. The music is parts 6 and 15 from Rachmaninov's Vespers.

If you enjoy old British spy shows, I’ve remade a music video for The Professionals, a show from the late 70s. It starred Gordon Jackson as the spymaster Crowley, and Lewis Collins as Bodie and Martin Shaw as Doyle, the spy partners. “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor focuses on Bodie, who had been previously a paratrooper and SAS soldier. Very fast-paced and much into shooting.

The Akbarnama was commissioned by Akbar the Great, the third Mughal Emperor, reigning from 1556 to 1605, as a history of his reign. It was written in Persian and illustrated by 49 artists. The music is from Nand Kalyan (vilambit ektal), from Ustad Munir Khan’s Classical Sarangi Music.

Mansur was active from 1590-1624 in northern India, working under the sponsorship of the Mughal emperor Akbar, and then under his son, Jahangir. Many of the birds and animals that he painted were brought as gifts to the emperor, and Mansur memorialized them, something incredibly useful since the Dodo became extinct within the next century. Music is from Rageshri (vilambit ektal / drut teental), from Ustad Munir Khan's Classical Sarangi Music. End pieces are Wild Animals and the People Who Love Them and Secondhand News for Star Trek's Kirk and women.

Born into an artistic Italian family, Giuseppe Arcimboldo's work was forgotten for centuries before being rediscovered. A craftsman in the Italian Renaissance tradition, Arcimboldo brought imagination and humor to his art with portraits made from fauna and flora. Several were cleverly made to be able to be turned upside down. Music is Espagnoletta, from the Spirit of Florence album. The end videos are Cats to Segovia's Bach and Rory's World to Joseph Blanchard.

The art of Pompeii’s Temple of Isis. Music is “Roman Banquet,” an original composition for replica lyre in the ancient Hypophrygian Mode, by Michael Levy. I really like this one. It’s the strangest mix of image styles that makes me think of Medieval AND modern art. First announcement of a video since the channel went over a million views! Thank you. As always, the ads belong to the copyright owners, not to me.

The mosaics and sculptures from the House of the Faun in Pompeii. Think of these as the ultimate jigsaw puzzles for archeologists. A selection of still lifes, aquatic life mosaics, as well as a complex battle scene between Alexander the Great and Darius. The artistry is truly astonishing. If you enjoy humor as well as beauty, I'd also recommend "Journal of Alexander the Great" by Henry Livingston (1793), which describes what REALLY went on in that very battle.

Luigi Bazzani (1836-1927) painted these images from 1880 to 1915. They were of such fine craftsmanship that they were noted for their detail and prized by the excavators of the site. The music is from "Five Variants of Dives and-Lazarus" by Vaughan Williams. I've also uploaded an improved version of the Alias music video "Here She Comes" by Bonnie Tyler. The show features a sexy CIA spy and this music was used in the rock score of the colorized version of Metropolis.

A scroll through frescoes from a single room in the House of Mysteries, assumed to depict the rite of initiation for a young girl into the Dionysian Mysteries, a mystery cult. The house, located in a suburb of Pompeii, was destroyed in the volcanic explosion of 79 AD and excavated beginning in 1909. This is the type of painting that inspired Neoclassical painters like Lawrence Alma-Tadema.

Sofonisba Anguissola (1532-1625) was a well-known portraitist during the Italian Renaissance, studying with a variety of artists from the age of 14. Upon receipt of a drawing she made for him, Michelangelo informally tutored her for a couple of years. A young Van Dyck visited her the year before her death at the age of 93, and wrote that she had taught him more than all of his teachers had up till then. Lost to history in the centuries since her death, the quality of her work is becoming known again. Music is from: Early Venetian Lute Music: “O Mia...
