An article, (Sept. 2, 2011), in something called the SB Nation, about a Presidential invitation extended to a group of NASCAR drivers, bemoaning the fact that 5 of the group have declined the invitations, citing scheduling conflicts. The writer, Jeff Gluck, is beside himself, stating in a snarky manner that these drivers must be very busy, not to want to meet with the leader of the Free World and implying they should do so regardless of political affiliation. He states that any sponsors or other appointments they may have should be rescheduled, because (and he uses italics because he is...

President Obama, like he does with all top sports teams or athletes, has invited last year's NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson and the 11 other drivers who competed for the championship to a White House reception next week. Usually this is an invitation that you accept, always, unless you're deathly ill in bed with athlete's butt or whatever it is people catch these days. And yet only seven of the 12 will be attending. Hmm. SB Nation reports: President Barack Obama will honor NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson and the 11 other Chase drivers from last year in a White House ceremony...

Bridging the gulf between Bobos in Paradise and Bitter Clingers in the hinterlands, you’re doing it wrong: Boldly going where no member of their party has ever gone before, key Democratic Party leaders embarked today on an historic fact-finding mission to NASCAR. The NASCAR visit, the first ever undertaken by Democratic officials, took place only after party leaders devoted several months of research to determine precisely what NASCAR was.“Once we learned that NASCAR involved cars and racing, and apparently had millions of fans, we looked at each other and said, ‘We must learn more,’” said DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe. –...

HAMPTON, Ga. (AP) NASCAR star Tony Stewart scoffed at the notion he turned down an invitation from the White House as some sort of political statement. Stewart is among four Sprint Cup drivers who say they can't attend next week's meeting with President Obama because of scheduling conflicts. Eight others who made last year's Cup playoff, including five-time defending champion Jimmie Johnson, plan to be there along with NASCAR chairman and CEO Brian France. "Trust me, if we could be there, we'd definitely be there," Stewart said Friday at Atlanta Motor Speedway. "I've always viewed it as an honor...

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Tennessee police said they got a shock on Saturday when they discovered a wild raccoon in the car of a Parkersburg man arrested for streaking at a NASCAR event. Joshua Greene, 27, was naked when officers arrested him in a local subdivision in Bristol, Tenn., said Bristol Police Capt. Matt Austin. Multiple witnesses called police after Greene went streaking through Pit Row Market, where concerts were being held for the weekend's races, Austin said. During the investigation, officers were surprised when they saw that Greene was keeping a live raccoon confined in the backseat of his car,...

President Barack Obama will honor NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson and the 11 other Chase drivers from last year in a White House ceremony on Wednesday but nearly half of the 2010 playoff contenders wont be there. NASCAR said Thursday that five drivers Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, Carl Edwards, Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart will not be attending the White House visit due to schedule conflicts. They must be very busy people. Regardless of ones political views, the president is still the president and an opportunity to speak with the leader of the free world is a...

Michigan taxpayers have doled out $18.1 million in special tax credits to Michigan International Speedway over the past three years. The possibility of further credits for MIS is a mixed bag. The State has committed to automatically giving the speedway some more dollars next year, while an even bigger annual hand-out and other future funding will be left up the Legislature. The MIS tax credits are officially referred to as NASCAR credits. They are listed in the annual Michigan Department of Treasury Executive Budget Report in two parts. One credit (the larger of the two) is the NASCAR Safety Credit....

The whole idea of an invocation at a sporting event kind of gives me the heebie-jeebies, but that could change if Pastor Joe Nelms of Family Baptist Church in Lebanon, Tenn., did all of them. Before Saturday night's Federated Auto Parts 300 Nationwide Series race in Nashville, Nelms thanked God for among other things, "the Dodges and the Fords," "Sunoco Racing Fuel" and "my smoking' hot wife, tonight, Lisa," in an obvious homage to the 2006 Will Farrell movie, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.
