With today being the Fourth of July and all, I feel it’s my civic duty to unite us, if but for a short time, with the one act of blind patriotism we can all get behind: counting down the most over-the-top, overwhelming renditions of the national anthem, as performed by Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, and the rest of your favorite divas of pop music. (In no particular order, of course, so please don’t tweet me death threats. Thanks!) To clarify, by national anthem I mean “The Star-Spangled Banner” only. (As in, the actual, official national anthem.) That...

Renowned operatic soprano Renee Fleming did a beautiful, unique rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" before kickoff of Super Bowl XLVIII Sunday, Feb. 2, between the Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos. Fleming was a polarizing selection to sing the American national anthem because of her style. The precedent has been to have pop stars do their take on the historic tune. Often the piece can become glamorized, with too much ornamentation, vocal runs or spins of originality. To deliver an epic performance on this grand of a stage at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., it took nothing more than Fleming's...

Renée Fleming has hit some important pop-culture markers in the past few months. In September, she went on David Letterman’s show to sing the Top Ten list. Now, she’s going to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl. Musical attention at the Super Bowl usually focuses on the halftime show, but since this kind of attention is so rare in classical music these days, and since Fleming is the first opera singer ever to be accorded this, well, honor, the announcement has caused quite a stir.

Via the Blaze, a possible sneak preview of the left’s next sports-related cause celebre once they’re done making “Redskins” unfit for polite conversation among the enlightened. To be clear, it’s not all pre-game patriotic music that this guy objects to, just the national anthem, and not because it’s the national anthem but because it’s a “war anthem.” The theory, I gather, is that the glory of victory in sports reflects on the song, which in turn reflects on the subject of the song, which in turn conditions people to think that war is awesome and a big game. But all...

On ESPN’s Around the Horn, frequent guest Kevin Blackistone of the Dallas Morning News said that football games should not include the singing of the national anthem beforehand, as that added to the “military symbolism.” He actually called the Star-Spangled Banner a “war anthem.” Blackistone was addressing controversy over Northwestern University’s American flag-themed football uniforms, designed to raise money for the Wounded Warriors Project. In a show segment titled “Buy or Sell,” Blackistone said that he would “sell” the uniforms:

During Friday’s Sporting KC Major League Soccer game, technical difficulties plagued what was supposed to be a performance by Dr. Cameron Smith. His moment to shine was thwarted by a faulty public address system and two misbehaving microphones. So that’s when the fans in Kansas City decided to step up and deliver a rousing rendition of the song themselves. The result? As one person who caught it on video put it, “chilling.”

Switzerland announced a national competition this week that will search for a new national anthem to replace its current one, which government officials say has too many references to God and is too old-fashioned. "The real problem is above all the text," said Lukas Niederberger, who is part of the Swiss Society for Public Utility (SGG), the completion organizer in charge of looking for a new anthem. "Officially the anthem is a psalm, a prayer, but of course we have an open society, religiously neutral. We have atheists, no single god, so this anthem is a difficulty," he told BBC...

By Executive Order, President Obama today adopted a New Pledge of Allegiance for the Nation and made recitation of the old version unlawful. He also adopted a new and better National Anthem for us. Officials at Goshen College, a Mennonite college in Indiana, have banned the use of the Star-Spangled Banner during sporting events. The reason school officials gave for the ban was that America’s National Anthem was deemed too violent. Specifically, according to Todd Starnes of FOX News, the school’s online fact sheet stated, “Historically, playing the national anthem has not been among Goshen College’s practices because of our Christ-centered core value of compassionate peacemaking seeming to be in conflict with the anthem’s militaristic language.” Professor John Blosser, an art instructor at Goshen, attempted to clarify the school’s opposition to the national anthem...

Christina Aguilera's national anthem at Super Bowl XLV was the subject of two popular prop bets -- the length of her performance and the duration for which she held the final note. The line on the total anthem length was 1 minute, 54 seconds, a figure that she was nearly exactly at, according to unofficial times. Aguilera, however, forgot the line in the Star Spangled Banner about "the ramparts." If she had completed the anthem in full, she would have nearly certainly gone over the Vegas line. Her final note appeared to have lasted longer than the six seconds that...

I have no idea when it became a crime to sing the national anthem at the Lincoln Memorial, but a group of high school students were shocked learn that recently. I’m surprised this did not get bigger attention sooner. High school students from the Young America’s Foundation started singing the national anthem when park police officers interrupted them, citing a federal law that says the area must be “completely content neutral.” That did not deter them though. Reportedly since so many people, including other visitors the park officers were unable to silence the patriots on the steps of the Lincoln...

We have finally learned what, in this day and age, can get students thrown off of federal property—singing the National Anthem. “A group of high school students attending a conservative leadership conference in Washington, D.C. said they were ordered by a security guard to stop singing the national anthem during a June 25 visit to the Lincoln Memorial,” Todd Starnes reported on Fox News yesterday. “They told them to stop singing,” said Evan Gassman, a spokesman for the Young America’s Foundation, which sponsored the conference. “I was taken aback.” “You wouldn’t expect a display of national patriotism to be censored.”...
