America's motto is "E pluribus unum," Latin for "Out of many, one." Some U.S. senators seem to be reading it backward. This week the Senate will consider legislation that would create an independent, race-based government for Native Hawaiians. If the bill becomes law, it would create a racial spoils system that would hand special privileges to up to one-fifth of the state's population--including many with only a trace of Hawaiian blood. It could inspire mainland groups such as Hispanic separatists to seek similar spoils, should they ever gain enough political leverage.

HONOLULU (AP) - A federal judge ruled Monday that the exclusive Kamehameha Schools may continue its Hawaiians-only admissions policy, rejecting a discrimination complaint from a student who said the policy violated his civil rights. U.S. District Judge Alan Kay said the admissions policy passed muster because of the school's unique historical circumstances. Since the private school receives no federal funding, it should not be held to the same scrutiny as public schools, Kay said. <p>The state attorney general is supporting the legality of Kamehameha Schools' admissions policy that gives preference to Native Hawaiian children.</p> <p>Attorney General Mark Bennett filed a "friend of the court" brief yesterday in U.S. District Court in one of two lawsuits that challenge the schools' admissions policy. The case involves an unnamed non-Hawaiian boy who contends he is eligible and willing to attend Kamehameha, but cannot because he is not of Hawaiian ancestry.</p>

<p>Some have concluded that he is, at best, a white supremacist and, at worst, evil incarnate.</p> <p>Others believe he is just another malihini lawyer, a carpetbagger who has lined his pockets at the expense of Native Hawaiians by challenging Hawaiians-only voting for trustees to the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, the expenditure of public money for programs that benefit Hawaiians and a Hawaiians-preferred admissions policy at Kamehameha Schools.</p>
