The internet of the future is likely to look very different from the distinct pages and sites we visit today – that was the message as Microsoft launched the latest version of their much-maligned Internet Explorer web browser. And while every major manufacturer always claims that theirs is a revolutionary product, the company that remains best known for Windows and Office might just be on the right track this time. Headlines around the world greeted IE9 as Microsoft’s most ambitious yet, while others called it revolutionary. Respected British website Techradar.com went so far as to call it “ie-mazing”. Almost since...

A RAF navigator gave plane-spotters a chuckle as he held up a sign reading 'I'm with stupid' with an arrow pointing to the pilot. The pair were on a training mission in a £13million Tornado GR4 aircraft, capable of reaching 1,400mph, when the navigator pulled the prank as they jetted through a valley in Wales. Based at RAF Lossiemouth in the Scottish Highlands, the men were flying through Snowdonia, in northern Wales, at the time of the Top Gun stunt. Knowing there would be spotters in the area, the amused navigator produced the homemade sign and sure enough, it was...

The B-52 entered into service in 1955 and was referred as one of the most powerful bombers. While that was true when the war plane first hit the skies, nearly 55 years later, it’s still true. Partly due to the testing B-52 Radar Navigator Christopher Rudd does at Edwards Air Force Base. “We’re an independent organization that plans, executes, analyzes, the new systems that’s coming on board for in this case the B-52,” said Rudd. From testing new software to new weaponry, they do it all to make sure despite its age, the B-52 is still top notch. “We are...

Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick met with City Council on Tuesday to discuss the possibility of more worker layoffs and cuts to city services to eliminate a budget shortfall, Local 4 reported. City Council said they subpoenaed Kilpatrick to come to Tuesday's budget meeting, but Kilpatrick said he never received the subpoena and planned on coming anyway.

Most of Thursday’s mayoral debate was strictly on the issues, except for one remark during a question about image and character. "I have never been arrested. I have never come in contact with anybody in the criminal justice process, me or my family. And I just want to know, can Mr. Hendrix say the same thing?" said Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

Riddle me this: What do Madonna, Bono, President Bush and Prime Minister Blair all have in common? They want to help poor Africans, that's what. But how to do that is the rub. Madonna has signed up for the latest Bob Geldorf concert series to heighten "awareness" of the dire African situation. She will join Paul McCartney and other pop stars in a series of shows next month. This is a nice, if somewhat fuzzy, idea. The last time Geldorf swam into these waters, in 1985, his "Live Aid" project raised about $150 million dollars for Ethiopian famine victims. The...

The mayor told WWJ-Radio that if City Council votes on Monday to remove 600 police officers and 120 firefighters, he would cancel the event. In a live address on Local 4 at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Kilpatrick "strongly" vetoed council's budget plan. The mayor and City Council agree that cuts need to be...

Ex-Detroit Mayor Archer backing ex-aide Hendrix for job 5/31/2005, 6:31 p.m. ET By DEE-ANN DURBIN The Associated Press DETROIT (AP) — Former Mayor Dennis Archer endorsed his former aide Freman Hendrix in the Detroit mayor's race Tuesday, saying Hendrix has the honesty and integrity for the job. "Rarely if ever has a candidate for mayor been so well-prepared for the job," Archer said. "Freman has the experience and maturity to lead this city forward and he has the judgment and temperament to bring everybody along." Archer also presented the Hendrix campaign with a $10,000 check at a Tuesday afternoon news...

Desperate for revenues, Detroit ponders fast-food tax 5/8/2005, 9:15 a.m. ET By SARAH KARUSH The Associated Press DETROIT (AP) — Would you like fries with that? Either way, the Detroit city treasury would like a bite. Faced with a $300 million budget hole, and with traditional revenue-raising options largely exhausted, Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is hoping people won't mind forking over a few extra cents for their Big Macs and Whoppers. Kilpatrick is preparing to ask Detroit voters to approve a 2 percent fast-food tax — on top of the 6 percent state sales tax already applied to restaurant meals. The...

Time magazine lists Kilpatrick among worst big city mayors 4/17/2005, 3:30 p.m. ET The Associated Press DETROIT (AP) — Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who is facing an election this year as the city struggles with a deficit of more than $300 million, is being dubbed one of the worst big city mayors by Time magazine. The list of Time's five best and three worst big city mayors appears in the issue of the magazine that hits newsstands Monday. Neither list was ranked, and the mayors were listed in alphabetical order. The magazine criticized Kilpatrick in part for the city's signing of...

Kilpatrick, reporters continue to clash over Navigator 1/31/2005, 5:46 p.m. ET By SARAH KARUSH The Associated Press DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick on Monday continued to clash with reporters over a luxury sports utility vehicle at the first of his weekly news conferences intended to improve his relations with the media. Kilpatrick announced he would hold the weekly briefings after questions over the city's two-year, $25,000 lease of a Lincoln Navigator snowballed into a major story. Kilpatrick at first denied that the Navigator was for his wife, but ultimately acknowledged that it was intended for use by the...

Detroit officials confirm SUV was intended for mayor's family 1/22/2005, 4:34 p.m. ET By SARAH KARUSH The Associated Press DETROIT (AP) — Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings confirmed Saturday that a luxury SUV leased by the city was intended to be used by police officers driving the mayor's family. WXYZ-TV in Detroit first reported on the SUV just over a week ago, saying it was for Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's wife, Carlita. The mayor's office and the police department repeatedly denied that it was for Mrs. Kilpatrick. "We clearly screwed up on the communications," Kilpatrick said during a news conference that included...

Ancient vessel retraces voyages of the past By Stefanos Evripidou IT LOOKS like a tree house stuck on a bamboo banana. In reality it's the incarnation of a pre-Pharaonic reed boat, designed and built to unravel the mysteries of prehistoric navigation. The Abora II drifted in to Larnaca marina yesterday. Weighing in at six- tonnes, the vessel is a totra-reed boat. It is 11.5 metres long, 3.5 metres wide and 1.5 metres deep. The man responsible for building the huge boat is Dominique Goerlitz, a biology teacher at a school in Germany. As a student, Goerlitz was fascinated by the...

The grandson of a Syrian army volunteer who once fought against Israel has become the Israeli Air Force's first Druse Arab navigator. He received his wings Thursday. Identified only as "Aleph," the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, the recruit completed two years of grueling training in a unit that has one of the highest dropout rates in the Israeli armed forces. For security reasons, Air Force members are known only by initials picked at random. Aleph's grandfather was a volunteer in the Syrian army, fighting against Israel 55 years ago. But he later deserted and pledged allegiance to Israel,...

I just downloaded and installed Mozilla and it seems to be better than the Explorer 5.5 I had been using. What is the downside to this? It seems to do everything I used explorer for, plus it has killed all unrequested popups, yet permits popups that I request (like tvguide). Is there something I'm missing here?

An Israeli software firm has discovered a flaw in Netscape and Mozilla software that allows code hidden in a Web page to read files from the user's PC. The bug is a more serious variant of one patched in Microsoft's Internet Explorer in February. GreyMagic Software reported that the problem affects XMLHttpRequest, which allows Web pages in the browser to send and receive XML data via HTTP, the standard Web transfer protocol. XML is an Internet language for describing just about any sort of data. According to the report, verified by other developers, XMLHttpRequest doesn't properly check the security settings...
