Fahlstrom and an employee of the bank were discussing the process when Fahlstrom began...

BISMARCK, N.D. — A former, longtime North Dakota lawmaker has been indicted on a federal charge alleging he traveled to Prague with the intent to rape a minor. The four-page indictment against former state Sen. Ray Holmberg also charges him with one count of receiving images depicting child sexual abuse. The indictment was filed Thursday in federal court in North Dakota. It accuses the 79-year-old Holmberg of traveling from North Dakota to the Czech Republic from about June 2011 to November 2016 with the intent to rape a person under the age of 18.

In 2001, Fargo, North Dakota, used the vehicle of zoning ordinances to prevent people from selling guns and/or ammunition from their homes. The ordinance was mostly ignored until some residents renewed their Federal Firearms Licence (FFL) in 2020. Fargo considered changing the ordinance but did not do so. In 2021, North Dakota strengthened its preemption statute to this language: 1. A political subdivision, including home rule cities or counties, may not enact a zoning ordinance or any other ordinance relating to the purchase, sale, ownership, possession, transfer of ownership, registration, or licensure of firearms and ammunition which is more restrictive than...

Officers Andrew Dotas and Tyler Hawes were shot and wounded in the incident and are both in “critical stable condition.” [snip] Barakat, the alleged shooter, was killed by...

For years, North Dakota stood out as one of a couple of states which had Constitutional Carry but did not grant the right to carry without a permit to people who were not residents of the state. Wyoming restricted permitless carry to residents but reformed its law in 2021. In the 2023 legislative session, the North Dakota legislature passed two bills restoring and protecting the right to keep and bear arms. Both bills were signed by Governor Doug Burgum (R) of North Dakota in mid-April. One of those bills, HB 1339 extended the Constitutional (permitless) Carry provisions to people who...

Ideally, the process of the judicial system would be free or cheap and painless. Unfortunately, it is expensive and painful, with long delays, expensive lawyer fees, and much uncertainty. The process of the judicial system has become a punishment in itself. A bill which would help alleviate punishment by process in self defense cases in North Dakota, has passed the North Dakota House by 50 to 40 on January 20, 2023. The bill, HB 1213, would allow a judge to provide reinbursement of costs to people who are prosecuted by the State for self defense, and are then found not...
  • Are Police Complicit in Media’s Attempt to Suppress Political Motive for Teen’s Killing? [ND]

How can the police say there is “no evidence” of a political motive when we have the accused’s own words suggesting that it was politically motivated? North Dakota teenager Cayler Ellingson appears to be the latest victim of left-wing terrorism incited, then ignored by the national media. The lack of curiosity in the press about his senseless and apparently political murder is predictable, but what is surprising is the way local police appear to be following their lead. Shannon Brandt, 41 and the accused in this case, told the authorities that Ellingson, 18, was a “Republican extremist” and that the...

A community is mourning the loss of an 18-year-old man from Grace City, North Dakota, as investigators look into what lead up to a deadly crash. Foster County Deputies were called to a hit-and-run that happened in an alleyway near Johnston Street and Jones Avenue in McHenry, ND. Court documents say at 2:35 Sunday morning, 41-year-old Shannon Brandt called 911 to report that he had hit a pedestrian because he was threatening him. Brandt told State Radio that the pedestrian was part of a Republican extremist group and that he was afraid they were “coming to get him.” The pedestrian...

Juli A. Mazi, 41, of Napa, plead guilty in federal court in San Francisco to one count of wire fraud and one count of false statements related to health care matters, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement. The limb, complete with skin, is just one of a series of remarkable finds emerging from the Tanis fossil site in the US State of North Dakota. But it's not just their exquisite condition that's turning heads - it's what these ancient specimens purport to represent. The claim is the Tanis creatures were killed and entombed on the actual day a giant asteroid struck Earth. The day 66 million years ago when the reign of the dinosaurs ended and the rise of mammals began. The BBC has spent three years filming at Tanis for a show to be broadcast on...

In a new Politico/Morning Consult poll, respondents who plan to vote in the GOP primary were asked “If the 2024 Republican primary were being held today, for whom would you vote?” Trump more than tripled his nearest competitor with 48 percent to former Vice President Mike Pence’s 13 percent, while Pence nearly doubled third-place finisher Donald Trump Jr.’s 7 percent. Senators Mitt Romney and Ted Cruz were tied with former Amb. Nikki Haley at 4 percent. South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, who delivered the GOP response to President Joe Biden’s address to a joint session of Congress last month, drummed...

The North Dakota House of Representatives has passed a bill that will make any future mask mandates illegal in the state. Monday’s vote passed 50-44 and is now heading to the state senate. “Our state is not a prison camp,” the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Jeff Hoverson, said. The state’s Republican Gov. Doug Burgum had put a mask mandate in place three months ago, but had previously expressed doubt about if mandates were really the way to go. The Grand Forks Herald reports that Hoverson called mask mandates “diabolical silliness,” referring to them as a conspiracy run by “unelected, wealthy bureaucrats...

Republicans who have supported Donald Trump's impeachment from South Dakota to South Carolina are getting a painful reminder of just how powerful the former president remains within the Republican Party ranks. Rep. Tom Rice was the latest to feel the wrath of Trump supporters when the South Carolina state GOP voted to censure him this weekend for his vote two weeks ago supporting the House Democrats impeachment article. "Trying to impeach a president, with a week left in his term, is never legitimate and is nothing more than a political kick on the way out the door," state GOP Chairman...

In Mandan, North Dakota, it's saloon mural 1, city 0. That's after the city hastily enacted a free speech-friendly ordinance to replace one that censored murals. Officials with the Institute for Justice said a lawsuit filed against the city by the owners of Lonesome Dove saloon has ended after the city changed its regulations to allow the saloon's mural. Brian Berube and August Kersten, the saloon's owners, and IJ had sued the city for "trying to ban their mural because it was 'intended to advertise an establishment,'" the IJ reported.

BISMARCK, N.D. — Reuben Panchol was forced to leave war-torn Sudan decades ago as a child, embarking on an odyssey that eventually brought him to the American Midwest and left him eternally grateful to the country that took him in. “I am an American citizen, a North Dakotan,” said Panchol, a 38-year-old father of four. “And without North Dakota, I couldn’t have made it.”
