The United States is less violent today than at any time in the last 20 years -- Maine was the least violent state and Louisiana the most violent, a group says. The United States Peace Index, produced by Institute for Economics and Peace, found Cambridge, Mass., the most peaceful metropolitan area and Detroit the most violent. The index analyzes peacefulness at the state and city levels, via five indicators: The number of homicides, number of violent crimes, the incarceration rate, number of police employees and the availability of small arms. There were improvements in all indicators from the 2011 to...

As head of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) from 2005 to 2009, Kip Hawley was the public face of an agency despised by millions of Americans. Today, he says that hatred is understandable because the agency’s approach to airport security is “broken,” arguing that it should forgo standardized procedures and a focus on prohibited items in favor of increased flexibility and mitigating risk.

LYNCOURT, N.Y. (CNN/WSYR) - One New York pizza shop got a new and unexpected drive thru window. A surveillance camera captured the driver of a car plowing into a Domino's storefront in Lyncourt. Several people were inside the restaurant at the time of the crash, but no one was hurt. Witnesses say two employees managed to jump out of the way of the car just in time. Police say the 24-year-old woman behind the wheel of the vehicle reportedly mistook the gas pedal for the brake. It's still not clear if authorities plan to issue the driver a ticket.

Congressman Bob Filner (D-California) has joined with several prominent LGBT civil rights leaders from San Diego and across the country, calling on the US Navy to name " … the next appropriate ship after Harvey Milk." The late civil rights icon, Harvey Milk was a Navy veteran who began his service during the Korean War. In Korea, he served aboard the submarine rescue ship USS Kittiwake as a diving officer. Milk was also stationed at Naval Station, San Diego where he was a diving instructor. Milk, whose parents, both also served in the US Navy was honorably discharged at the...

Not Excited About Romney? PoliticsApril 25th, 2012 David J. Peterson This year’s GOP primary has been an odyssey filled with sound and fury. But, like elephants who never forget, millions of Republicans are muttering “haven’t we seen this movie before?” Conservatives who were looking for a solid alternative to Democrat Barack Obama are angry and disappointed. The party rank and file was opposed to the nomination of Mitt Romney, seeing him as a weathervane – willing to adopt any position or cause to suit his ambitions. The Republican establishment, which is dominated by big business and the Wall Street elite, heard...

[suckers] -- Big news: In 10 days, President Obama is hitting the campaign trail. On Saturday, May 5th, the President and First Lady Michelle Obama are holding the first two public rallies of the campaign in Columbus, Ohio, and Richmond, Virginia. He'll speak about how far we've come, and lay out the very real stakes in this election: Are we going to continue to move forward, rebuilding an economy that's meant to last, with a growing middle class and more Americans getting a fair shot? Or are we going to go back to the same failed policies that crashed our...

ANNAPOLIS — Gov. Martin O'Malley emerged Tuesday from a much-anticipated meeting with the state’s two leading lawmakers and revealed that he is not only leaning toward calling a special session, but he might even call two of them. Mr. O'Malley, a Democrat, said he hopes to bring the General Assembly back into session by mid-May so legislators can pass a set of tax and revenue increases to erase $512 million in cuts that were put into place when the assembly adjourned April 9. The governor said he wants to focus strictly on finances and hold off on debating a gambling...
  • Obama's Power Move: Scapegoating Speculators

    The Atlas Society ^ | April 25, 2012 | Walter Donway
After all, if re-elected, Mr. Obama may come out the closet as a full-blown radical environmentalist, opposed in principle to the exploitation of natural resources for human wealth. In any case, he would have four more years to subvert oil production in the name of “alternatives.” If passed by Congress, or implemented administratively, his crusade to criminalize speculation will undercut the crucial economic role of speculators: to minimize the impact of projected future shortages. If left alone, speculators would do this by bidding up the present price of oil, reducing demand now and conserving supply, thus lessening the impact of...

It chronicles personal and political milestones in the candidate’s life, such as his wedding anniversary, endorsements and positive poll numbers. Cruger launched the page on Jan. 21 with a video of Romney recalling his father’s relationship with Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. The social-media venture's mission is to gather African-American support for Romney’s White House bid. “Mitt...

By now you have assuredly read, either from our team here in Texas or in the media, Newt will be suspending his presidential campaign effective May 1st. While we are all certainly disheartened by the news that our preferred candidate will no longer be vying for the Republican Nomination, we can be proud of the all the efforts put forth by this wonderful team we built together in Texas. I would like to specifically thank some of you who went above and beyond in their efforts both to assist me and Newt. First, to Sondra Zeigler who travelled around various...

Writing for the Hill, The Root contributing editor David Swerdlick says the NAACP is wrong to shut down the congressman over his recent accusations about communism. Instead, he argues, members should listen to West and challenge him where they disagree. As the Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers reported last Friday, in the wake of West’s comments, the Martin County chapter rescinded its invitation to have him address its Freedom Fund Banquet, now rescheduled for September 15th. And the reason, according to chapter president Rev. Jerry Gore, is because “There’s a certain statement he made about communists” and “we do not represent...

Former White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs certainly knows what real power is like. For the first three years of the Obama administration, Gibbs was the voice of the White House, standing behind a podium in the press room every day, where reporters peppered him with questions. But this past weekend, Gibbs stood behind a very different kind of podium. And, to hear him tell it, he was genuinely nervous. Gibbs was a contestant in Jeopardy's Power Players week (yes, we like that name!), which airs the week of May 14th. {video at link} [...]

MADISON — Arthur Kohl-Riggs dresses as Abraham Lincoln and says he is a better representative of the Republican Party than Gov. Scott Walker. Kohl-Riggs is running against Walker in the upcoming gubernatorial recall primary. Kohl-Riggs is one of the placeholder candidates running in the race. 23-year-old Kohl-Riggs made a name for himself as the “Abe Lincoln Protester” during the budget battle. Now, he’s running as a Republican in the recall primary against Walker. “I’m running as a Republican in the Wisconsin gubernatorial election against Scott Walker because Wisconsin has a long and proud tradition of progressive Republicans. The party was...
  • Family Misses Flight After TSA Gives Pat-Down To Girl With Cerebral Palsy

WASHINGTON (CBSDC) – The Transportation Security Administration is once again the subject of national scrutiny, this time after aggressively screening a 7-year-old female passenger with cerebral palsy which caused her family to miss their flight. Since Dina walks with the aid of leg braces and crutches, she cannot pass through airport metal detectors, and must instead submit to a pat-down by TSA agents.

On March 19 NBC6 ran a story on the phone call George Zimmerman made in connection with the Trayvon Martin case. In that story an error in editorial judgment was made in which a question from the operator was deleted which could have created the impression that Mr. Zimmerman’s statement may have been singling out Trayvon Martin because of his race. We take this incident very seriously and apologize to our viewers. After conducting an extensive investigation, we are putting a more stringent editorial process in place to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

BALLINASLOE, Ireland—Michael Brennan once earned as much as €1,000 ($1,300) a week as a carpenter installing roofs during Ireland's housing boom. But after about three years without steady work, the 29-year-old is starting over in a freezing meat hall here, trying to carve out a new—and much less lucrative—future. Mr. Brennan is enrolled in a training course where he is learning to excise bones from bloody slabs of cow. In the end, he hopes to land an entry-level job at a meat-processing factory. The likely pay: €350 a week. Mr. Brennan is part of a mass reinvention of Ireland's workforce...

Throughout American history, almost every generation has had substantially more education than that of its parents. That is no longer true. When baby boomers born in 1955 reached age 30, they had about two years more schooling than their parents, according to Harvard University economists Claudia Goldin and Lawrence Katz, who have calculated the average years of schooling for native-born Americans back to 1876. In contrast, when Americans born in 1980 turned 30 in 2010, they averaged about eight months more schooling than their parents. This development already has broad ramifications across the U.S. job market: Those with only a...

Last night Liz Butler and Joy Cushman of MoveOn.org hosted a “National Major Actions” conference call to discuss with fellow left-wing activists a slough of direct actions in the coming months. Among those plans are a series of continuous disruptions and demonstrations against banks, corporations, and anyone they deem to be members of the “1 percent.” The call aimed to motivate activists looking to dig in deeper to their commitment to dismantling the American economy. Actions began yesterday by shutting down the Wells Fargo’s share-holder meeting in San Francisco and were touted on the call. According to the L.A. Times,...
