    Reuters ^ | November 13, 2012 | by Pedro Nicolaci da Costa
The budget deficit rose in October, the first month of fiscal year 2013, as looming negotiations over expiring tax cuts and imminent spending reductions dominated the post-election political landscape. The Treasury said on Tuesday the October deficit was $120 billion, larger than economist forecasts for a $114 billion gap and up from $98 billion in October of 2011. Growth in expenditures outpaced rising receipts, deepening the deficit. Outlays grew to $304 billion from around $262 billion in the same month last year while receipts rose to $184 billion from $163 billion.

The California Chamber of Commerce sued the state today in a last-minute protest against the historic "cap and trade" greenhouse gas auction set for Wednesday. In a suit filed in Sacramento Superior Court, the chamber said the auction is really "an unconstitutional tax" on businesses that are affected by the state's global warming act, AB 32.

Colorado Springs, Colo. (November 12, 2012) On Election Day, at an enthusiastic gathering of Obama supporters in Fountain, Colorado; Dave Phillips, a reporter for the Colorado Springs Gazette Telegraph, had just finished an interview with Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar about his controversial policies for managing Americas wild horse populations. Just after Secretary Salazar answered final questions about the future safety of wild horses and he turned to leave the interview, he unexpectedly approached Phillips and told him, If you set me up like this again, Ill punch you out. The White House insisted Tuesday that it was not aware of the David Petraeus scandal until last Wednesday, blaming FBI "protocols" for not being informed earlier. Press Secretary Jay Carney said President Obama was "surprised" when he learned last Thursday that Petraeus had carried on an extramarital affair. While the FBI had at that point already been investigating for months, Carney said "protocols" at the agency apparently kept them from notifying Congress and other agencies in the Executive Branch. In the latest shoe to drop, the FBI on Sunday forwarded to the Pentagon a case involving thousands of "potentially inappropriate"...

Liberals often like to compare President Barack Obama to former President Abraham Lincoln. The comparison is usually dismissed as laughably hagiographical, but judging by one unexpected bit of fallout from Tuesdays election, it could well end up being accurate in just one respect: Like Lincoln, Obama is facing requests by the citizens of numerous states to secede from the union. However, unlike with Lincoln, these requests are peaceful, and highly unlikely to do anything at all except generate news headlines. A massive number of petitions are currently circulating on Change.org, a website designed to call for action by the federal...

Foxconn has been planning to buy 1 million robots to replace human workers and it looks like that change, albeit gradual, is about to start. The company is allegedly paying $25,000 per robot about three times a workers average salary and they will replace humans in assembly tasks. The plans have been in place for a while I spoke to Foxconn reps about this a year ago and it makes perfect sense. Humans are messy, they want more money, and having a half-a-million of them in one factory is a recipe for unrest. But what happens...

With the national exit poll showing Obama winning with just 39 percent of white voters, a smaller share than any Democrat since Mondale, the emerging conventional wisdom holds that a demographic tidal wave of minority turnout cost Romney the presidency. As a result, Republicans are focusing on their poor performance with the burgeoning Latino population; even Sean Hannity says he's "evolved" on immigration reform. But while the national exit poll data give the impression that Romney got the job done with white voters, Romney's stellar national performance obscures stark regional differences that suggest the GOP has its own problem...

Some reflections: GERARD ALEXANDERSome are feeling despair: If Republicans gave it their all, and couldn’t beat a polarizing president in a terrible economy, maybe they can never win again. This is bad political analysis, for four reasons. First, many perceive the economy as no worse than when Obama took office, and so they don’t see him as incompetent. Months ago, several political-science models that emphasize economic factors predicted a slender incumbent victory. Second, Obama won with 51 percent, which even the New York Times headlines acknowledged was a slim win. Third, Romney mobilized fewer...

Michael Steele, the former chairman of the Republican National Committee, floated the idea of running again for the RNC chairman position on Sunday. Asked directly if he would run again on C-Span, Steele said, "It's not a bad idea. I can go shake up the house a little bit more, what do you think?" "Are you serious?" asked the host. "We'll see." Asked when he would announce a decision to run, Steele said, "Oh, I've got time for that."

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, may be open to eliminating certain oil-industry tax breaks to prevent the necessity of tax increases. Republicans have started examining the tax code in their effort to raise revenues without actually raising rates, and breaks for many of the largest companies in the country could be on the chopping block, reported The Hill. The details will have to be negotiated. Not going to speculate on what a final package may look like, said Kevin Smith, a spokesman for Boehner. Oil companies receive about $4.4 billion in tax breaks every year, according to USA Today. Democrats...

President Obama is considering asking Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) to serve as his next defense secretary, part of an extensive rearrangement of his national security team that will include a permanent replacement for former CIA director David H. Petraeus. Although Kerry is thought to covet the job of secretary of state, senior administration officials familiar with the transition planning said that nomination will almost certainly go to Susan E. Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. John O. Brennan, Obamas chief counterterrorism adviser, is a leading contender for the CIA job if he wants it, officials said. If...

The American people have spoken, renewing President Obamas mandate for change for yet another four years. Following the announcement of Obama's reelection, Communist Party USA (CPUSA) chairman Sam Webb wrote an article in the CPUSAs official newspaper, Peoples World, expressing his contentment with the election results. After a long and bitterly contested battle, the forces of inclusive democracy came out on top yesterday, Webb said. The better angels of the American people spread their wings, as they went to the polls. Webb went on to reaffirm that the election results were in the CPUSAs favor: The Communist Party said a...

As the thoroughly unbelievable saga spins its merry way across the MSM, IMHO the stage may be being set by the administration for a thoroughly implausible case for "plausible deniability" for Obama. I predict that Petraeus will be accused of running a rogue CIA operation in Libya about which the President, as carefully explained by dementia patient Joe Biden, knew nothing. Interesting clues: Broadwell's co-author on the bio is a WaPo reporter. Says "he had no clue..." What he probably does have is WH connections. The Tampa "socialite" Broadwell allegedly harrassed turns out to be absolutely dead broke and living...

The title of the petition is, "WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO: Strip the Citizenship from Everyone who Signed a Petition to Secede and Exile Them." BISBEE, Ariz. (AP) A supporter of the Republican candidate in Arizona's undecided 2nd Congressional District race has asked a court to block tallying of results from 130 ballots in Cochise County. Republican challenger Martha McSally and Democratic incumbent Ron Barber are neck in neck in results so far. The suit filed Tuesday in Cochise County Superior Court in Bisbee contends that election officials mishandled three precincts' provisional ballots by not sealing them in envelopes.
  • Lesbian Mothers Children - Is it time to retire the National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study?

This month yielded yet another published study — which received positive media attention — based on the National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study. The NLLFS is about to enter its third decade of following the same 78 respondents, who were “planned” and born to lesbian mothers employing artificial reproductive technology; in nearly all the families studied, the children were being raised by their biological mother and her partner. While any sociologist worth his or her degree can appreciate the laborious task of keeping track of and reinterviewing the same group of people over many years, this particular data-collection effort probably...

A judge noted in the file that Khawam "has attached letters from Gen. David H. Petraeus averring to her ability to appropriately parent the child, and is prepared to present corroborating testimony at trial." And in court documents filed by Kelley's sister Natalie Khawam, she name-drops both Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island -- who both have ties to a Providence, RI, lawyer/lobbyist who loaned a whopping $300,000 to Khawam. Khawam claimed in a July 12 letter to her estranged husband that she took their son "on vacation last year to Martha Vineyard," where...
