The manager of a Faro-based supermarket chain today shot an employee, wounding him in the arm. The incident occurred about 05.00a.m. at a warehouse in Galvanas that services the ‘Algartalhos’ supermarket chain. It is thought that the employee was caught with an accomplice stealing stock. The city of Detroit, facing a serious cash crisis, is set to go bankrupt by the end of this year and would put city workers on furlough unless it strikes a deal with the city council that would bring in $30 million before Dec. 14. Detroit has been in financial turmoil for years, losing a quarter of its population in the past decade and facing a shrinking auto industry that has reduced tax revenues. The Detroit City Council gave the mayor the option to hire a financial advisor and in return receive $30 million by the end of the year....

Congressional Pension May Still Await Jesse Jackson Jr.By Billy House November 21, 2012 | 5:00 p.m. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., may be resigning from Congress under a cloud, but the Illinois Democrat may still be in line to draw a congressional pension. That is, unless the 47-year-old lawmaker later agrees to forfeit his retirement benefits through any plea negotiations that might come out of the federal investigation he acknowledged is ongoing. On Wednesday afternoon, the best estimates through quick calculations by the Alexandria, Va.-based National Taxpayers Union determined Jackson could have an annual pension of about $45,000 if he waits...

... Teresa Dougherty: "I never felt that way about the other presidents. They seemed stuck up, but he seemed so down to earth. That's why I want to meet him." Ninety-three year old Teresa Doughtery is a big Barack Obama fan and asked us to get her a ticket to the presidential debates at Lynn University. Teresa Dougherty: "It would be a dream come true. I would shake hands with him and if I could kiss him, I would kiss him." I tried to get her tickets, talking to every local democratic leader we thought could help. Tried Lynn University,...

Every family’s got one, at least. That hardcore conservative who makes every Thanksgiving get-together a nightmare by sounding off, unprompted, on how liberals are ruining this country with their taxing and their spending and their gay-marrying, and how back in my day blah blah blah. Usually you just keep your head down and stare into your turkey and try not to make eye contact with anyone. Then the next morning in the shower you remember what you should have said in response. But this year’s going to be different. Why? Because here at MSNBC, we’ve anticipated crazy Uncle Gary’s top...

By his own admission George Orwell was a committed socialist. About a year before his death in 1950 Orwell responded to the leftist charge that his recently published novel 1984 represented a direct attack on both socialism and the British Labour Party. Orwell calmed the fears of his progressive friends with the following response: "My recent novel [1984] is NOT intended as an attack on Socialism or on the British Labour Party (of which I am a supporter) but as a show-up of the perversions to which a centralized economy is liable and which have already been partly realized in...

What’s even more American than turkey, cranberries and pumpkin pie these days? An Italian gun, that’s what. The only known surviving firearm that crossed the wild Atlantic aboard the good ship Mayflower, settled with the pilgrims at Plymouth Colony and ultimately helped the first colonists not only survive, but prosper. Meet the Mayflower Gun. The GunAffectionately dubbed the Mayflower Gun and thought of as an American icon, the gun is actually an Italian-made wheel-lock carbine. This single-shot musket was originally chambered in .50 caliber rifle, though ages of heavy use have worn away the majority of the rifling. Given...

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives posted two 60-day notices in the Federal Register today, the first under the heading “Agency Information Collection Activities; Proposed Collection; Comments Requested: Relief of Disabilities,” and the second under “Certification of Qualifying State Relief From Disabilities Program.” Citing that the information requests will be submitted to the Office of Management and Budget, the notice advises interested parties that “Comments are encouraged and will be accepted for ‘sixty days’’ until January 22, 2013.” The first notice is an “[e]xtension of a currently approved collection” on “Relief of Disabilities.” The “need” cited for the...

A cartoon image comes to mind. A mother breaks up a fight between two children, one of whom offers this defense: “It started when he hit me back.” Remember that mentality when you hear Palestinians call Israel “the aggressor.” Hamas fired hundreds, perhaps 1,000 missiles into Israel from Gaza. They hit schools, apartment buildings, streets and vacant lots. The aim was to kill and, if not to kill, at least to terrorize. Mission accomplished. Finally, Israel responded, first by “droning” the Hamas military leader, then by airstrikes against the terror group’s ammunition dumps and rocket launchers, some intentionally placed near...

GULF COVE, Fla. - A man out on a walk Tuesday morning came face to face with two charging dogs in Gulf Coast. He shot and killed one of the dogs. A witness told deputies he saw the entire incident in the area of Gillot Boulevard and Holton Terrace. Deputies met with Frank Gross, 63, who lives several blocks away on Flemming Street. He advised he was out for his usual five-mile walk along the same route he takes every day. He said two large Boxer dogs were let out of the home at 5403 Holton Terrace and were not...

CLEVELAND - Third District Police say a male was sleeping on his couch when he heard someone kick open a door. The resident ran and grabbed a gun. The suspect kicked open a second door to the home and that's when the resident fatally shot the male suspect. Cleveland Police arrived at the scene and located the alleged intruder dead in the driveway. Cleveland's Third District Police Department Captain Romoga said the suspect was armed with a knife. If you’re a thief, there are a couple of warning signs that you should watch out for. A dog bowl and a leash in the front yard would tip you off that you’re probably going to get bitten. A sign that reads, “Trespassers will be shot!” is pretty self-explanatory. The home of 77-year-old Lloyd McCarty is similarly filled with warning signs. He flies an American flag on the front porch, he has a U.S. Marine Corps patch tacked to the wall, and he also keeps a framed picture of himself in his glory day as a Marine. If the home...

After several years of costly concessions, the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco and Grain Millers Union (BCTGM) authorized a walk-out earlier this month after Hostess received bankruptcy court approval to implement a wage cut that was not included in its contract. With operations stalled, the company that makes Twinkies and other famous U.S. brands said last week that liquidating its business was the best way to preserve its dwindling cash. It won court approval on Wednesday to start winding down in a process expected to claim 15,000 jobs immediately and over 3,000 more after about four months. Interviews with more than a...

It only took 40 years. But finally, actress-turned-workout-specialist Jane Fonda has apologized for sitting on a Viet Cong anti-aircraft gun during her 1972 visit to North Vietnam. Fonda, who used her fame to push her radical leftism during her heyday, traveled to Hanoi in 1972 in solidarity with the Viet Cong. While there, she proceeded to blame the US for supposedly bombing a dike system, and did a series of radio broadcasts stating that US leaders were “war criminals.” Those broadcasts were replayed for American POWs being tortured by the Viet Cong. Later, when POWs spoke about their experiences of...

The Taliban in Pakistan says it was behind a suicide bomb that killed 13 people on Wednesday night during Shi’ite processions in the city of Rawalpindi. The blast ripped a hole in the walls of a Shi’ite mosque. Hardline Sunni militant groups have recently stepped up attacks against Pakistan’s minority Shi’ites whom they regard as non-Muslims. Two other bomb blasts killed at least three people during another Shi’ite gathering in Karachi. It came just hours before the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, hosts a summit of eight developing nations including Iran, Egypt, Turkey, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria and Bangladesh. They are expected to...

HARRISBURG — Pennsylvanians will face billions of dollars in higher taxes unless Congress acts by the end of the year to defuse a threatening combination of tax increases and spending cuts contained in the so-called “fiscal cliff.” A recent report by the state’s Independent Fiscal Office, Pennsylvania’s version of the federal Congressional Budget Office, suggests the fiscal cliff would drain billions from Pennsylvania’s economy, putting a strain on state tax revenues and the state budget. Based on estimates from the Tax Policy Center, a nonpartisan think tank in Washington, D.C., the IFO projects the fiscal cliff will raise federal taxes...

Planned Parenthood has botched another abortion on a woman, this time in Indianapolis, Indiana. After injuring the woman, staffers at the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic attempted to hide the failed abortion from emergency dispatchers. An ambulance was called to transport a woman in the middle of a second-trimester abortion to the hospital from a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Indianapolis on November 2 after the abortion practitioner refused to continue the abortion. The emergency was classified a Priority E, which reserved for the most severe cases, according to information Operation Rescue provided LifeNews today. This is the seventeenth medical emergency...

The performance of the revolutionary Iron Dome system in the ongoing defense of Israel from Hamas rocket attacks, dubbed Operation Pillar of Defense, has been so extraordinary as to be considered by all but the most hardline critics to have proven the efficacy of missile defense. By November 20, six days since Hamas dramatically increased the volume of rocket fire against Israel, 340 intercepts had been made, with the Iron Dome system achieving a greater than 80 percent success rate. For Israel, this capability not only saves lives but also provides the government with precious time to contemplate a response...
