  • Morsi opponents, backers clash in widest violence yet as Islamist president defends powers

CAIRO – Thousands of opponents of Egypt's Islamist president clashed with his supporters in cities across the country Friday, burning several offices of the Muslim Brotherhood, in the most violent and widespread protests since Mohammed Morsi came to power, sparked by his move to grant himself sweeping powers. The violence, which left 100 people injured, reflected the increasingly dangerous polarization in Egypt over what course it will take nearly two years after the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak. Critics of Morsi accused him of seizing dictatorial powers with his decrees a day earlier that make him immune to judicial oversight...

The U.N. wants to use drones, the French news agency Agence France-Presse reports. "The United Nations wants to use drones for the first time to monitor fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where Rwanda has been accused of aiding rebels," says the report, quoting U.N. officials. The international body "is considering a range of ways to strengthen the capabilities of MONUSCO to protect civilians from the threat of armed groups in the vast area of eastern DR Congo," a U.N. spokesman says. "Unarmed aerial vehicles, drones for monitoring the movements of armed groups, are one tool we are...

There are already 8 million Americans working part time who want to work full time. It seems likely that number will skyrocket once Obamacare is implemented. An Obamacare supporter is as stupid as the Democrats who passed the legislation in the first place: ******** When my better half told me that her boss was thinking about cutting all full-time employees to part time in order to avoid the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act insurance requirements (for full-time employees), my initial response was, "Surely the federal government wouldn't have allowed such a blatantly obvious way of getting out of the...

A heckler openly mocked shoppers at an Oceanside, California Best Buy as they waited for Black Friday deals. The man can be heard shouting 'you zombies are the reason Thanksgiving and the holidays are being destroyed' and other anti-Black Friday comments as shoppers filed in the store.

What if we told you that the election was decided by a phrase? You might not believe it, but assume we’re right for a minute. What word would you guess decided the election? Hurricane Sandy? The answer lies in perhaps the single most illustrative exit poll question conducted, where CNN asked “What is the most important candidate quality to your vote?” The response options were “Strong Leader,” “Shares Your Values,” “Has a Vision for the Future,” and “Cares about People.” Among folks that chose one of the first three responses, Mitt Romney won between 54-61% of their vote. But, among...

Egypt's president on Thursday issued constitutional amendments that placed him above judicial oversight and ordered the retrial of Hosni Mubarak for the killing of protesters in last year's uprising. Mohammed Morsi also decreed immunity for the Islamist-dominated panel drafting a new constitution from any possible court decisions to dissolve it, a threat that had been hanging over the controversial assembly. Liberal and Christian members withdrew from the assembly during the past week to protest what they say is the hijacking of the process by Morsi's allies, who they saw are trying to push through a document that will have an...

Top Republican Senator ditches Norquist anti-tax pledge A top Republican senator is casting aside an anti-tax pledge he signed, saying that solving the country’s looming fiscal crisis is more important than honoring the decades-old pact. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., broke ranks with other conservatives Wednesday when he made the remarks to a local television station. Chambliss is a member of the Gang of Six, a bipartisan group of senators tasked with finding a solution to the country's fiscal woes.

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu agreed to a ceasefire for halting the eight-day Israeli Gaza operation Wednesday night, Nov. 21, after President Barack Obama personally pledged to start deploying US troops in Egyptian Sinai next week, DEBKAfile reports. The conversation, which finally tipped the scales for a ceasefire, took place on a secure line Wednesday morning, just hours before it was announced in Cairo. Clinton was sympathetic to this argument. Soon after, President Obama was on the phone to Netanyahu with an assurance that US troops would be in place in Sinai next week, after he had obtained President Morsi’s...

With the result of the Nov. 6 election being what it was, it is pretty clear a cap-and-trade tax is just around the corner. The cap-and-trade tax is a tax on the production of carbon dioxide. This will affect primarily the energy-producing industries. They will, in turn, undoubtedly pass the tax down to the consumer. The price of electricity should skyrocket, and gasoline prices are estimated to increase by at least 20 cents a gallon. This will bring the United States in line with the rest of the world, which, obviously, the citizens of this country (well, at least half...

A day after Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi brokered a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, he widely expanded his own powers. It’s been met with both approval and anger, with accusations that he cares only about his followers, not all Egyptians. Clashes between Morsi's supporters and opponents swept the nation on Friday, with police firing tear gas at demonstrators in Cairo. Rallies sprung up in several different cities, after Morsi signed a controversial decree expanding his powers – a move that has divided the country on whether the leader has the right to do so. And as the controversy around Morsi...

By Steve H. HankeMy October 2009 Globe Asia column was titled “Iran’s Death Spiral.” In light of the recent events that have transpired in Iran, I think I might have been onto something back in 2009.Since early September, there has been an accelerated slide in the value of the Iranian rial. This slide has been punctuated by dramatic collapses in the demand for the rial. With each collapse, there has been something akin to a “bank run” on rials – with a sharp rise in the black market (read: free market) IRR/USD exchange rate (see the accompanying chart). Ironically, Iranians...

In Afghanistan, fratricide-style insider attacks are calling into question U.S. counter-terrorism strategy. The U.S. security debacle in Libya has rightly been scrutinized for the past several weeks. The murder of ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans in the Benghazi consulate on September 11 demonstrated the abysmal level of protection for State Department officials in the North African country. An equally devastating story, however, has only partially surfaced from Afghanistan—the “insider attacks” on Western troops by their putative Afghan partners. These assaults hold extraordinary implications for America’s future anti-terror campaign throughout the Middle East and Africa. Such fratricide-type killings stab at...

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice has come forward this week to defend her actions in the days following the September 11 Benghazi attack. Rice received much criticism for (saying) that the attack was the result of a spontaneous demonstration prompted by an anti-Islam video.[snip]The strong view of the US, said Rice, is that there is no justifiable excuse for violence and any attacks are reprehensible. [snip] Wallace countered with the argument of critics who says that our allies in the Middle East no longer trust us and our enemies no longer fear us. Rice repudiated that claim,...
  • Former Obama Chief Economist: Let's Tax Carbon and Snacks

Former Obama Chief Economist: Let's Tax Carbon and Snacks by Ben Shapiro 23 Nov 2012, 10:29 AM PDT 1 post a comment Always looking for new ways to slice its pound of flesh from American business, Obama allies are suggesting improvisational taxes. Give them points for creativity. Former Obama chief economist Larry Summers said that carbon taxes and taxing fatty foods should be on the table, but only once economic stasis has been reached. Of course, this begs the question of why we should ever tax products if we know those taxes will harm the economy, but that’s a question...

Thanksgiving is my FAVORITE! it didn’t used to be so—I mean sure, as a child I loved to sing about the great, big turkey down on Grandpa’s farm, but mostly it was just a blip on the radar screen between Happy Halloween and Merry Christmas. Growing up we’d make the trek to Grandma and Grandpa’s in Cache Valley, which felt like an eternal pilgrimage. . . . [snip] [T]here was a magnificent feast to behold! Despite union efforts to target retailers like Walmart, businesses are reporting record Black Friday traffic – the biggest sign yet that the unions are out of touch with the American people. Starting at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving, Walmart put its products on Black Friday sale, sparking a run to the stores and earning the stores record sales.
