  • 4-Week-Average Jobless Claims At 13-Month High As Sandy Effects Gone

    11/29/2012 6:01:19 AM PST · by Perdogg · 5 replies
While any and every bad data point recently has been summarily dismissed by the 'transitory' effects of Hurricane Sandy, it appears in the deepest darkest reality that there is more of a structural trend to this shift than simply a 'blip'. Claims missed expectations and prior data was revised higher leaving the four-week-average at its highest since October 2011 jumping back over 400k.
  • Targeting Old White Men (...every age has its fashionable prejudices)

Who were all the great inventors, innovators, and philosophers? Who forged the West? Who birthed democracy? Who gave us our Constitution? While modern society prides itself on being unbiased, it’s no exception to the rule that every age has its fashionable prejudices — and unfashionable people. Among the latter today are white men, and the closer they are to “dead white male” status, to use a favored leftist descriptive, the greater the disdain in which they’re held. Thus do we see sneering at “old white men.” Earlier this year, Senator Harry Reid — one well acquainted through experience with old-white-male...

Lakshman Achuthan Vigorously Defends His Recession Call, Says We'll Know If He's Wrong Within One Month Sam RoNov. 29, 2012, 6:30 AM ECRI's Lakshman Achuthan is on Bloomberg Surveillance with Tom Keene, vigorously defending his recession call, which many have called dead wrong. In case you're catching up, back in September 2011 Achuthan predicted the U.S. would go into recession. Advisor Perspectives' Doug Short has a great summary of all of Achuthan's calls and appearances since then. Achuthan essentially lays out two parts to his defense this morning. First, a recession is not measured as two consecutive quarters of GDP....

PAUL ERICKSON: Ladies and gentlemen, pals and gals, children of all ages, welcome to After the Election, What Lies Ahead with Congressman Louie Gohmert and Congressman Allen West. • Give Obama what he wants: Implosion is exactly what America needs in order to find its fiscal way

The best thing the Republicans could do right now is to give Obama everything that he wants. Those of us who think, rather than feel, understand that Obama’s course will end up with the United States going bankrupt, because there isn’t enough money on the planet, much less the US, to pay for all the goodies the Democrats want to bestow on their favored constituents. Just to give you an example of how hopeless the situation is, the combined net worth of the Forbes list of America’s 400 wealthiest people is just over $1.7 trillion. So if you confiscate 100%...

... Obama is having Mitt Romney over for lunch on Thursday and their meeting is already generating a lot of buzz. Here are five theories about the White House’s motives.... 1. Obama is extending a common courtesy... 2. Obama will offer Romney a Cabinet job... 3. Obama will enlist Romney in the fiscal cliff debate... 4. Obama wants Romney’s advice on business issues... 5. Obama wants closure on the 2012 presidential election, or something else?....

French anti-Semitism is well known and deeply embedded in French culture. It therefore comes as no surprise that France will likely be the first major Western power to recognize Palestinian statehood, according to a statement released by the French Foreign Ministry. No doubt, the continued Arab migration to France and the influence Muslims wield in that spineless country...

The atheists I grew up with in Texas were a tad bit pluckier than today’s lardy hagfish atheists who file lawsuits every winter when they see a child wrapped in swaddling clothes. Yep, the anti-theists I used to hang out with in the Lone Star state were rugged individualists who were so busy milking this existence that they didn’t have time to bleat like a stuck sheep because a plastic baby Jesus statue endangered their delicate beliefs. My other non-believing buddies who weren’t the robust Hemingway types were usually heady stoners who were into physics, Pink Floyd and Frisbee and...

    - FrontPage Magazine - http://frontpagemag.com - The Problem With MulticulturalismPosted By David Solway On November 29, 2012 @ 12:48 am In Daily Mailer,FrontPage | 5 Comments Most conservative observers are of the opinion that multiculturalism as it has been understood and practiced is nothing short of a social and economic disaster. And it must be said they are largely, if not entirely, correct. The multicultural project in its contemporary form suffers from two grievous flaws: the filter is too wide, allowing into the country unskilled people who are poorly equipped to participate in a modern, technologically oriented economy and who...
  • Reuters Thinks Going From 100% to 35% Tax Rate Will Be a Burden for Cubans

Reuters somehow can't recognize a 100% tax rate even when it is right under their noses in their own article. Reporter Marc Frank apparently thinks that going to a 35% tax rate would somehow be more of a burden for Cubans than their current tax rate which is 100%. Frank even wrote about the 100% tax rate but absurdly didn't recognize the fact that total confiscation of revenue is the same thing: Under the old system, large and small state-run companies, which accounted for more than 90 percent of economic activity, simply handed over all their revenues to the government,...

I recently read the new biography of Trotsky by Oxford don Robert Service, published in 2009 by Pan Books. It is well-written and surprisingly interesting. The book does a great public service in describing the life of the actual Trotsky, whose previous “biographies” were little more than hagiographies written by his toady worshippers (people like Isaac Deutscher). The last time that I had taken any interest in Trotsky was when I was a teenager and had fleeting delusions of believing in “socialism.” Reading the new book as an adult and as an economist, I found it a useful opportunity to...

New research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences tends to now show that ice melt estimates previously calculated for Greenland have not significantly accelerated- as has been previously postulated- nor has the melt contributed in a meaningful way to the rise of sea levels. Recently, much of the destruction on the east coast as a consequence of Super-Mega-Hurricane Sandy Gore was blamed on the rise in sea-levels, which have been blamed on…drum roll…global warming. The newest revelation, amongst many in the last several years that have muffled the global warming chants of  “settled science, settled science, settled...

Brisk Black Friday gun sales added to the record-setting gun-buying year coming to a close in Wisconsin. While gun purchases set a record nationally on Black Friday, Wisconsin's peak gun-buying frenzy stretched for months following the adoption of the state’s concealed carry law, which went into effect on Nov. 1 last year. The state’s handgun hot line, which gun dealers call to get background checks to see if prospective handgun buyers are barred from owning guns because of felony status or mental health reasons, is having a record-shattering year. As of Tuesday, the hot line had received 117,379 request

Welcome to the pretzel logic of liberal environmental protection: In order to “save” owls, the Obama administration is going to shoot them dead. This is not — I repeat not — an Onion parody. Over the Thanksgiving holiday, the White House released a big fat policy turkey: its final critical habitat rule for the endangered northern spotted owl. The Obama plan will lock up 9.6 million acres of land (mostly, but not all, federal) in Oregon, Washington and northern California. This is nearly double the acreage set aside by the Bush administration. Thousands of timber workers (along with untold thousands...

The United States will not reverse its descent into the abyss of financial and societal bankruptcy until the current political and governing establishment is replaced. That will not happen until the American people, who have been deliberately ill-educated and deceived, experience first-hand the early stages of the turmoil and suffering extant in Europe and elsewhere. While professing to care for the interests of the average person the underlying motivation for the vast majority of the governing class or Establishment is first and foremost self-aggrandizement and the acquisition of wealth.

We have already discussed the student loan bubble, and its popping previously, most extensively in this article. Today, we get the Q3 consumer credit breakdown update courtesy of the NY Fed's quarterly credit breakdown. And it is quite ghastly. As of September 30, Federal (not total, just Federal) rose to a gargantuan $956 billion, an increase of $42 billion in the quarter - the biggest quarterly update since 2006.But this is no surprise to anyone who read our latest piece on the topic. What also shouldn't be a surprise, at least to our readers who read about it here first,...

Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) attorneys filed a lawsuit Tuesday on behalf of two Minnesota taxpayers challenging the state’s unauthorized use of state funds being used for elective abortions. The plaintiffs in Walker v. Jesson are suing to prevent the state from using public funds to pay for non-therapeutic abortions on indigent women. The Minnesota Legislature passed a statute in the late 1970s limiting the abortions it would pay for, and also banned taxpayer funding for elective abortions. In 1995, the state Supreme Court struck down part of the statute, ruling that the state cannot withhold state funding for abortions that...

Their words, not mine. Israel’s latest defensive action in Gaza has led to an ugly new outpouring of Jew-hatred across the globe. So many devout Muslims calling for jihad in the cause of Islam, so few “moderates” denouncing the devout. So many “misunderstanders” of Islam, so few “moderates” speaking out against the millions of “misunderstanders.” It is not surprising – because Jew hatred is a religious mandate under Islam. During Operation Pillar of Defense, Hamas broadcast a video on its official Al-Aqsa TV station saying, “Killing Jews is worship that draws us close to Allah.” IPT News reported Monday that...
