The White House has been hyping its #My2K Twitter hashtag in an attempt to galvanize supporters to contact their Congressional representatives to demand action to avert the fiscal cliff.  The administration estimates that unless Congress moves, the average family's tax bill will jump by more than $2,000, starting on the first of January.  The implication, of course, is that Republicans are once again standing in the way of resolving this problem.  Show of hands -- as the media breathlessly follows every minor twist and turn of these negotiations, how many of you have seen this fact reported?   .@barackobama's #My2K shenanigans ignore...

At the United Nations we are witnessing the creation ex nihilo of a foreign country, which never existed, and accepting the claims of the Palestinian Arabs, by giving them the land whose memory kept the Jews together as a people and brought them back to Jerusalem after the Holocaust. The Western community at the United Nations, including my miserable Italy, just adopted the Nazis' strateg. Cunning in wickedness, the Germans dangled before their victims the possibility of saving themselves at the expense of other Jews. In this case, the Jews to be sacrified are all of those living in Judea...

For the first time since their campaign of roving city-to-city terrorism began in Seattle several years ago, Communist/anarchist, America-hating 'anti-globalization' protesters were met by citizens determined to stand up against their violence and intimidation. Led by the D.C. Chapter of Free Republic, a total of about two hundred Americans drew a 'line in the sand' at the Navy Memorial on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. today, where nine months earlier the Communist/anarchists had assaulted the memorial by trying to tear down the flags and signals on the masts there during the inaugural parade of President George W. In yet another example of the United Nations bias against Israel, the international bodys Division for Palestinian Rights (DPR) sent a letter to its pass office yesterday asking that it withdraw passes issued to a prominent Jewish organization, while it pack[ed] the Assembly with so-called Palestine supporters, Breitbart.com reported. Upon receiving the request, UN security officials revoked the passes, which had already been printed and handed to 23 pro-Israel Jewish young adults, who were part of an educational program associated with the Taglit-Birthright Israel alumni community. In an homage to Andres Serrano's "Piss Christ," Beck concluded by dunking a likeness of President Obama in a mason jar filled with a clear yellow liquid. Yesterday Charles Krauthammer said that Republicans have leverage right now with the president on this fiscal cliff deal because if tax rates go up on all Americans, Obamas second term will begin in a recession as the higher tax rates will slow growth even more, and Krauthammer contends that Obama doesnt want that. But Rush passionately disagrees noting that analysis disregards Obamas entire first term. Rush believes that Obama doesnt care about having a successful economy in his second term, that its all part of his push to transform this country into a welfare state because thats what is fair...

The Liverpool Care Pathway has become a checklist for killing. This is what happens when a country allows bureaucrats to control healthcare. (Yes, I am issuing an unsubtle warning about Obamacare.)The Pathway was designed by health bureaucrats to fix a real problem: Too many patients were being allowed to die in pain in UK hospitals. In centralized systems, the answer to a problem is always more technocracy. So, the Liverpool Care Pathway was put into place to ensure that dying patients receive adequate pain control, including in the rare instances that it is necessary, sedation. But rather than being patient-centered, it became a bureaucratic nightmare: ...

The proposal, loaded with Democratic priorities and short on detailed spending cuts, was likely to meet strong Republican resistance. As Sherif Girgis, Robert P. George, and I argue in The Wall Street Journal, the future of marriage is the future of humanity. Conservatives rightly uphold the institution of marriage between a man and a woman because marriage is the seedbed of society, the necessary precondition for limited self-government. But not everyone sees it this way. With the United States Supreme Court expected to decide this week whether to hear challenges to traditional marriage laws, now is the time for citizens to think deeply about the nature and purpose of marriage. Marriage unites a man and woman holisticallyemotionally and bodily,...

The Connecticut Post is reporting that Huntsman is accused of stealing $3,000 in cash and a gold chain from the victim's body. The family obtained the victims clothes from the hospital, but were...

BAGHDAD: The crisis in Syria is threatening to rupture Iraqs precarious sectarian divide, which some say may re-ignite into a civil war. Wedged between Syrias greatest ally, Iran, and its greatest foe, Turkey, with its own volatile ethnic makeup, oil riches and fresh out of years of civil strife, Iraq is desperately clinging to a neutrality on the Syrian crisis. That policy is being increasingly put to the test as players from across Iraqs fragile political spectrum begin to take sides in a war of increasing sectarian dimensions. This situation is not going away, said U.S. Lieutenant Colonel Joel Rayburn,...

Three years ago, a Denver bellhop ventured into Arizonas Superstition Mountains determined to find the Lost Dutchmans Mine, an elusive, vast gold reserve that has lured prospectors since the 19th century. Jesse Capen, 35, had made finding the hidden treasure an obsession fueled by more than 100 books and maps on the legendary and perhaps nonexistent mine named for German immigrant Jacob "The Dutchman" Waltz. On Saturday, years after Capens Jeep, wallet, backpack and cellphone were found by hikers, volunteers from the Superstition Search and Rescue finally located what they believe is Capens body. We call em Dutch...

Clumps of alpha-synuclein move through dopamine-producing cells, mouse study finds The insidious spread of an abnormal protein may be behind Parkinsons disease, a study in mice suggests. A harmful version of the protein crawls through the brains of healthy mice, killing brain cells and damaging the animals balance and coordination, researchers report in the Nov. 16 Science. If a similar process happens in humans, the results could eventually point to ways to stop Parkinsons destruction in the brain. I really think that this model will increase our ability to come up with Parkinsons disease therapies, says study coauthor Virginia Lee...
  • New Cuban Tax Just Same Old Communist Expropriation

Tyranny: The media praised Cuba for slapping taxes on its impoverished citizens for the first time, calling the move "market-oriented" and "modern." In reality, it's just a new kind of theft from the same old dictatorship. To hear Reuters tell it, you'd think that Cuba, a brutal communist dictatorship for 53 years, has been a tax-free haven for all its lucky citizens. "Most Cubans have not paid taxes for half a century, but that will change under a new code starting Jan. 1," the newswire chirped, noting that the new taxes on private profits begin in the 35% vicinity. They're...

For those of you that were here, I'm gonna build a little bit on yesterday. I'm watching all of the talk from everybody, learned pundits, learned analysts, elected officials, and virtually everybody, and they're all discussing this fiscal cliff issue. Identically the same. They are all analyzing it through the same prism. They're all looking at it as though it's no different than any other budget negotiation in the history of the...
  • MESSENGER Finds New Evidence for Water Ice at Mercury's Poles

New observations by the MESSENGER spacecraft provide compelling support for the long-held hypothesis that Mercury harbors abundant water ice and other frozen volatile materials in its permanently shadowed polar craters. Three independent lines of evidence support this conclusion: the first measurements of excess hydrogen at Mercury's north pole with MESSENGER's Neutron Spectrometer, the first measurements of the reflectance of Mercury's polar deposits at near-infrared wavelengths with the Mercury Laser Altimeter (MLA), and the first detailed models of the surface and near-surface temperatures of Mercury's north polar regions that utilize the actual topography of Mercury's surface measured by the MLA. These...
  • Liberal Onslaught Empowered By Republican Timidity

While conservatives are painfully aware that Barack Obama did in fact win on November 6, the grimness of the current situation is only enhanced by the manner in which the Republican Party has responded to his reelection. It is not surprising that though Obamas margin of victory was considerably smaller this year than in 2008, Democrats and their media minions are claiming their victory as a mandate to transform America into a sorry imitation of those failing European socialist states. What is appalling however is that establishment Republicans are almost exuberant in their efforts to characterize the election as a...

I'm actually looking at this in wonderment. I don't care where you go. It could be a left-wing blog or right-wing blog, a left-wing magazine, a right-wing magazine, a left-wing newspaper, right-wing newspaper, they're all analyzing these negotiations in the same way: Can Obama prevail over the Republicans? Do the Republicans have any leverage? Are the Republicans going to get entitlement reform? Will there be any...

I work in HR. We are being told by Blue-cross Blue-shield Insurance that dependents CANNOT be removed from the insured's policy until they turn 26, even if they get married (and have coverage under a spouse), take a job on their own (and have their own coverage), leave home (no longer living in a parent-child relationship), etc. etc. This includes a non-adopted step-child. They are saying it is ILLEGAL under Obamacare to remove that child from the insured's coverage. The parent's coverage would be primary and if they got another policy it would be secondary. Seems this make the parent...

Sick children are being discharged from NHS hospitals to die at home or in hospices on controversial death pathways. Until now, end of life regime the Liverpool Care Pathway was thought to have involved only elderly and terminally-ill adults. But the Mail can reveal the practice of withdrawing food and fluid by tube is being used on young patients as well as severely disabled newborn babies.
