I’ve been arguing against higher taxes because of my concerns that more revenue will simply lead to a bigger burden of government spending. Yes, I realize it is theoretically possible that a tax hike could be part of a political deal that produces a good outcome, such as entitlement reform. But that doesn’t seem to happen in the real world. Indeed, I pointed out almost exactly one year ago that the only budget deal that gave us a surplus was the 1997 pact that cut taxes instead of raising them. But maybe there’s evidence from other parts of the world showing that...

An editorial in the Scranton, Pennsylvania Times Tribune claims to be "Calling out states' rights hypocrites." The allegation of "hypocrisy" is centered on gun rights advocates' condemnation of Pennsylvania Attorney General-elect Kathleen Kane's signature on a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) urging them to reject two national concealed carry reciprocity bills: There is one area in which the states' rights crowd applauds federal intervention, however - regarding to the right to bear arms. Have you ever noticed that people who worry about inequality seem to be focused only on certain kinds of inequality? When they obsess about the income and wealth of the top 1%, they seem to be bothered by only some of those at the top, and not others. For example, have you ever seen Robert Reich or Paul Krugman or any like-minded complainer bemoan the huge salaries of professional athletes? What about the stratospheric incomes of rock stars? Or movie idols? Or super models?Even more puzzling, when is the last time you saw any of them assailing worthless heirs?...

So I figured I’d even the score and mark down some of the more bearish economic signs I’ve been seeing lately. In the wake of what might appear to be a disastrous presidential election, it must be remembered that Republicans now control half of the fifty state governments outright. So while Republicans can do nothing at the federal level except obstruct radical leftist plans, Republicans at the state level can do a great deal to transform America. There are lots of areas in which this political muscle could be used to defeat leftism. Why not start with the macabre obscenity of taxpayer-supported higher education? We do not need public universities -- or, for that matter, any universities -- to produce genius....

Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-OH) may have finally gone too far betraying conservatives. This past week, he removed three conservative Republican Congressmen from their committee positions in retaliation for not voting for his compromises on the budget with Democrats – compromises that led us to the current “fiscal cliff.” Rep. David Schweikert (R-AZ) was removed from the Financial Services Committee, and Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-KS) and Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) were removed from the Budget Committee. All three were elected with strong Tea Party support. An aide to GOP leadership said they were removed for “not being team...

His persistence paid off Thursday when he underwent the procedure at Loyola University Medical Center. After years of uncertainties, Mariscal said he's excited about his future and grateful for the help he received. But he remains frustrated with a health care system that he worries might leave out an untold number of illegal immigrants in need of lifesaving treatments. "Why can't we be treated the same?" he asked while sitting in his hospital room. "Health care should be a human right, not...

Republicans are divided. President Obama won't budge. And more and more, it looks like the fiscal-cliff deadline of Dec. 31 will be missed. It's now clear that Team Obama wants higher tax rates and revenue-raising tax-deduction caps to meet their $1.6 trillion revenue target. Spending cuts and entitlement reforms are vague to nonexistent. In fact, it could be that Obama not only rejects the across-the-board budget sequester, but that he actively seeks to raise spending, not cut it. I guess it stands to reason that if you puff up his $800 billion revenue increase from last year, and double it...

December 21 of this year might herald the end of the Republican Party as a major political party. And that's because the president is up against the GOP's equivalent of Churchill's "Boneless Wonder," Speaker John Boehner. Matched against the president, Boehner is making Ned Beatty's hapless character from the classic movie Deliverance look downright gritty. Boehner the Boneless Wonder's beta dog routine is doing much to deep-six the Party of Lincoln. Hyperbole? My buddy, Glenn Beck, has made a great contribution to the TEA party movement and to a renewal of popular interest in our Founding Fathers and their ideals. For all that he deserves praise. But, I believe, he is making a serious error in abandoning the civil right of marriage. The Republican Party was founded in opposition to two historic wrongs. The party’s first platform in 1856 denounced “slavery and polygamy—the twin relics of barbarism.” Slavery was finally put down with a terrible toll—630,000 Americans dead in the Civil War. If you really want to understand the vast changes that have occurred in America over the past 50 years, all you have to do is watch James Bond. Back in 1962, the first Bond movie, "Dr. No," was released, catapulting Sean Connery to international stardom. Even President Kennedy expressed admiration for Ian Fleming's fictional British secret agent. Connery's Bond was ultra-suave but amazingly politically incorrect. If you averaged $30K per year over your working life, that's close to $180,000 invested in Social Security. LANSING, MI — Union members say their fight isn’t over after the House and Senate passed bills to make Michigan a right-to-work state. After a long day of protesting inside and outside the state Capitol, union leaders called on members to attend civil disobedience training on Saturday, and return to Lansing for more protests on Tuesday. “We’ve got to rebuild the broad social justice movement; I think this is going to energize people,” said United Auto Workers President Bob King. “All this administration has done is attack working people, so it’s our job to go out and talk in our...

I met Senate President Don Gaetz after speaking to the Senate Committee on Healthcare Exchanges. I explained to him that I wanted to teach on nullification and why the Healthcare Act is unconstitutional. He mocked the Founders of the this nation to my face, implying they are irrelevant to the interpretation of the Constituion. He laughed at my support of Constitutional principles. He then shouted out to me as he left the room that he wouldn’t read anything that I sent him. This morning I sent him an email explaining the Founders’ position on State Sovereignty and nullificaion. After sending...

Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter SH: So are you saying that, for PR purposes, that they should give in to Obama on the tax rate? AC: Not exactly, I--Well, yeah, I guess I am. SH: You're saying capitulate to Obama? We don't have a revenue problem, Ann. AC: We lost the election, Sean. Hannity seems genuinely flummoxed by Coulter's capitulatory attitude, but does she have a point? Recent polling has been gruesome for Republicans. Not only does an overall double-digit plurality favor raising taxes on "the rich," support for extending all current tax rates has plummeted by nearly 30 percentage...

President Barack Obama asked Congress Friday for $60.4 billion in federal aid for New York, New Jersey and other states hit by Superstorm Sandy in late October. It’s a disaster whose cost is rivaled only by the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the 2005 Hurricane that devastated New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. Obama’s request adds a huge new to-do item to a congressional agenda already packed with controversy on how to resolve the nation's budget woes and avoid the so-called fiscal cliff. “Our nation has an obligation to assist those who suffered losses and who lack adequate resources...

Ex-Dixon official's home: Pool, baby grand, chandelier with pistolsAssociated Press 4:15 p.m. CST, December 7, 2012 Rita Crundwell spared no expense when she built and furnished her sprawling home with custom touches like a chandelier made of old revolvers and spurs, an in-ground pool and a baby grand piano in the wood-beamed living room. **SNIP** And she did it all, Crundwell has admitted, by stealing $53 million from the people of Dixon, embezzling the money over two decades while serving as comptroller in the city that was Ronald Reagan's boyhood home. The 59-year-old pleaded guilty last month and will be...

It's looking very likely that a bill in Congress that will make mandatory the use of "black boxes"— more formally, Event Data Recorders (EDR) — will become law soon. These are little computers clad in rugged casings that record data from your car's various sensors and computers to use for accident investigation and, very likely, other uses. There's lots of privacy concerns around this new bill, and lots of questions as to exactly what that little boxy black snitch is snooping on. Plus, what about the voluntary black boxes some insurance carriers are offering? Let's see what we can clear...

It was just a matter of time. Charlie Crist, Florida's former Republican governor who relished the tough-on-crime nickname "Chain Gang Charlie" and used to describe himself variously as a "Ronald Reagan Republican" and "Jeb Bush Republican," on Friday signed papers to become a registered Democrat. He did so Friday evening during a Christmas reception at the White House, where President Barack Obama greeted the news with a fist bump for the man who had a higher profile campaigning for Obama's re-election this year than any Florida Democrat.
