In this year's campaign, Senator Jean White and state House candidate Jeffrey Hare, both Republicans, were attacked via mailers featuring a gay couple kissing and slogans suggesting that the image represented their version of family values. Turns out that the couple in question, Brian Edwards and Tom Privitere, weren't asked if their photo could be used in this way -- and now, they and the photographer who snapped the pic are suing the outfit that used it. Details and the images in question below. Here's the original photo, as captured by photographer Kristina Hill to mark Edwards and Privitere's engagement....

With the spotlight on Wisconsin's union thugs rampaging across the state, one wonders why it took propaganda filmmaker Michael Moore so long to put himself in front of the news cameras to take some of their publicity for himself. But this weekend, Moore finally glommed onto the cameras making himself out to be a great supporter of the union's efforts in the Badger State. Once again, though, Moore proves to be a hypocrite. It was Moore, after all, that excluded using union workers in one of his recent films. Some supporter of unions! Filmmaker Moore attend a recent Wisconsin pro-union...

European Union finance ministers reached an agreement early Thursday to create a single supervisor for their banks - one of the most significant transfers of authority from national governments to regional authorities since the creation of the euro currency. Under the deal, banks with more than $39 billion in assets supervised or those that represent a significant proportion of their national economies will be placed under the oversight of the European Central Bank. The deal gives the ECB broad powers, including the ability to grant and withdraw banking licenses, investigate institutions, and financially sanction banks that don't follow the rules.

Set to the tune of Leonard Cohen‘s oft-covered classic “Hallelujah,” Sandler and David Letterman‘s long-time sidekick Paul Shaffer performed a parody titled “Sandy, Screw Ya!” Name-dropping every famous New Yorker under the sun from Mayor Michael Bloomberg to Alex Rodriguez to Donald Trump‘s combover, the lyrics were as follows: “The terror of the hurricane / The unforgiving wind and rain / New York, the world held its breath as the storm...

Walker was asked Wednesday about whether he would push to make Wisconsin a right-to-work state on the heels after his proposal in 2011 that effectively ended collective bargaining for most public workers. Walker said that introducing a right-to-work bill could lead to massive protests like what happened last year over the collective bargaining bill. He said those protests and the recall elections that followed created uncertainty for job creators. Walker said, "The last thing I want to do is create the sense of uncertainty out there." Walker stopped short of saying he would veto a right-to-work bill should it pass.

In an unprecedented and surprising move, the Federal Reserve announced on Wednesday that it will keep interest rates near zero and will purchase $85 billion in bonds every month until unemployment falls from its present 7.7% to 6.5%. The new plan will maintain the $40 billion a month of mortgage-backed bond buying it began in September while adding another $45 billion in Treasuries. John Boehner is a good man in a hard place. He has served in public office as a lifelong conservative, not a RINO. His position on the Obama tax increases has been better than almost any other Republican who has been speaking out lately, given the Obama/Democrat election victories -- close loopholes and deductions for $800 billion in new revenue over a decade, but no increases in rates. But face it. Boehner is no match for Obama on the national stage. He cannot press the economic arguments articulately. He does not have a compelling personality. Obama is running circles around...

When I decided on a scientific career, one of the things that appealed to me about science was the modesty of its practitioners. The typical scientist seemed to be a person who knew one small corner of the natural world and knew it very well, better than most other human beings living and better even than most who had ever lived. But outside of their circumscribed areas of expertise, scientists would hesitate to express an authoritative opinion. This attitude was attractive precisely because it stood in sharp contrast to the arrogance of the philosophers of the positivist tradition, who claimed...

Facing potentially dramatic budget cuts on two fronts, Connecticut's commissioner of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection says the agency will need to remake its business model to continue to do its job. In a particularly sobering presentation to an annual gathering of environmental advocates, Daniel Esty made it clear that the pain from a series of expected state budget cuts would be exacerbated by anticipated federal ones -- money that the department has relied heavily on for many years. If you live in one of these silencer-friendly states and haven’t purchased a suppressor, you need to put one on your Christmas list. The advantages of suppressors are numerous. York (now Toronto), Niagara (now Niagara-on-the-Lake) and Washington, D.C. were torched. Elsewhere, homes and properties were looted and damaged and family lives were thrown into chaos. The borders between British North America and the United States might not have changed when the fighting stopped — the old lines were reconfirmed in the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the war on December 24, 1814. But once the treaty was signed, there wasn’t simply a return to the...

Most don’t know that successful individuals and small businesses already pay a progressive rate Myths are perpetuated in Washington, with conventional wisdom created by one person and bouncing off hundreds more in a self-reassuring circle of groupthink. But in real America, you can find the truth if you look hard enough. When the Democratic Party and the fourth branch of government, the mainstream media, unite on an issue, the result is a powerful megaphone of misrepresentation. During the present fiscal cliff negotiations, the most egregious myth perpetrated by the Democratic media complex is that the public supports raising taxes on...

Rep. David Schweikert of Arizona, another of the removed Republicans, suggested he could support House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia for speaker. Asked point-blank if he would vote for Cantor, Schweikert offered a humorous response: “It’s bad enough being removed from your committee — I’d actually like not to be chairman of janitorial supplies if I answer that.” According to Bloomberg, any budget deal Boehner might reach with President Obama would need Cantor’s support to insulate the speaker from rebellion in the GOP ranks, but “there is no guarantee that Cantor would stick with Boehner if a negotiated deal...
  • Florida about to register one million active conceal-carry permits

Gun instructor Frankie Bright has been teaching conceal-carry classes for three decades. He says demand for classes is on the rise. “A lot of people are coming out and saying ‘listen, I would like to get a conceal carry permit so I can be legal.’” The re-election of President Barack Obama and fear that Washington will pass stricter gun laws is fueling the run on guns, especially in Florida. At a news conference at the state Capitol Wednesday, Commissioner of Agriculture Adam Putnam announced a fast approaching milestone. “Florida will have one million active conceal weapons licenses next week.” Hitting...

Despite what looked like recent signs of progress on a deal to avert the so-called "fiscal cliff," House Speaker John Boehner signaled today that Republicans and Democrats remain as far apart as ever in the negotiating process -- and is warning his fellow lawmakers that they might have to work through the Christmas holidays. In a meeting with the House Republican Conference this morning, Boehner told members not to make plans for Christmas, CBS News has learned, and members leaving the meeting said there were no indications from Boehner's remarks that any real progress has been made between the two...

The seizure of five containers by the Maritime Police in the Port of Naples last Friday, Dec. 7 - before they were loaded on an Egyptian freighter – shut down two of Iran’s mainline clandestine arms routes to the Hamas-ruled Gaza from Kosovo and Macedonia via Croatia and Italy, reported exclusively from military and intelligence sources. The Naples police acted on a tip-off from Israel. Iranian arms smuggling rings were then partly rolled up in other parts of Italy together with “another cache of weapons.” Western intelligence sources say this Israeli undercover operation was equal in significance and scope to...

Poor and elderly Americans who rely on aid from the federal government to heat their homes stand to get less help this year if Congress and the White House fail to figure out a way to avoid the combination of tax increases and automatic spending cuts known as the fiscal cliff. If that happens, there'll be an automatic 10 percent reduction in funds from the federal Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. But the plight of those in the estimated 6.9 million households who rely on the money to keep warm hardly appears to be a priority for lawmakers in...

After the successful May 2011 raid that took down Osama bin Laden, President Obama said that “his [bin Laden’s] demise should be welcomed by all who believe in peace and human dignity.” Pakistan’s treatment of CIA informant Dr. Shakil Afridi tells a different story, however. The country’s spy agency (Inter-Services Intelligence) promptly arrested the doctor for helping Americans identify OBL’s compound. In addition to a fine and his entire bank account being looted, Afridi was sentenced to 33 years in prison for high treason and is now reportedly being tortured: ... According to Afridi, ISI “regards America as its “worst...
