A knife-wielding man injured 22 children and an elderly woman outside a primary school in central China as students were arriving for classes. The attack took place in the Henan province village of Chengping just before 8am, said a local police officer. The attacker, 36-year-old villager Min Yingjun, is now in police custody, according to an officer who declined to give her name, as is customary among Chinese civil servants. It is the latest in a series of similar periodic rampages at Chinese schools and kindergartens. A Guangshan county hospital administrator said the man first attacked an elderly woman

The number of people identifying with no religion nearly doubled over the last decade while the percentage of people who call themselves Christians has dropped to 59 percent, down from 72 percent 10 years ago. The Muslim Council of Britain was pleased with the new data, saying Muslims were playing a “significant part in increasing diversity in Britain.” Of the roughly 56.07 million people counted in the census, 33.24 million described themselves as “Christian” while 2.7 million identified as Muslims, an increase from 3.0 percent...

Descendants of Ernest Hemingway’s six-toed cat Snowball that live at his museum home are subject to federal regulation because they substantially affect interstate commerce, a federal appeals court has ruled. The cats roam the late author’s former Key West home at 907 Whitehead Street, now a museum that hosts daily tours and weddings, report the Christian Science Monitor and National Public Radio. On Friday, the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled (PDF) that the U.S. Department of Agriculture has the authority to regulate the felines.

There are a bunch of bargaining chips currently being passed back and forth between President Obama and House Speaker John Boehner as they seek to reach a budget deal before the county slides down the much-feared fiscal cliff. Perhaps the most notable involved tax rates for the wealthy: Generally speaking, Democrats want to raise them; Republicans -- many of whom signed Grover Norquist's pledge to never raise taxes -- don't. So even though more than 60 percent of Americans say they would support higher taxes on the rich, we remain at an impasse. Some of those 60 percent also happen...

WASHINGTON (AP) -- With the nation teetering on an economic "fiscal cliff," federal judges may soon force Congress to dedicate possibly millions of dollars to what some of those same judges must consider a worthy cause: their own salaries. Congress in 1989 limited federal judges' ability to earn money outside of their work on the bench and in exchange provided what was supposed to be automatic cost-of-living increases to judicial salaries to ensure inflation wouldn't erode the value of those salaries over time. U.S. District Judge Royal Furgeson Jr. of Texas, one of the judges seeking class-action status, called that...

It’s important to make this point, because I keep seeing articles about the “fiscal cliff” that do, in fact, describe it — often in the headline — as a debt crisis. But it isn’t. The U.S. government is having no trouble borrowing to cover its deficit. In fact, its borrowing costs are near historic lows. Forget the Grand Prix or the Daytona 500, the real race right now is the race to Damascus. The racers include Syrian rebels in pickup trucks with mounted machine guns and homemade tanks, toting weapons and equipment supplied and paid for by Qatar and Turkey, and more covertly by the British and French intelligence services. Racing along with them are carloads of international diplomats urging their governments to give the Islamist militias more money and more weapons. Everyone is on the road to Damascus in this amazing race. Christian refugees from Aleppo, Alawites packing in behind the tanks of the...
  • Sens. Stephen Colbert and Ashley Judd? The rocky road from stardom to politico

The speculation for the 2014 elections has already begun, and some of the Senate names being discussed you would expect to see on the silver screen rather than a ballot. Can you imagine a Sen. Ashley Judd? How about Sen. Stephen Colbert? There's a long, and somewhat checkered history of celebrity politicians proving that Hollywood success can pave the road to Washington--Ronald Reagan being the ultimate example. Of course there are other examples as well, like the Govenator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and professional wrestler Jesse Ventura who wrestled his way to governor of Minnesota. When celebrities become candidates, their notoriety brings...
  • Physicists testing to see if universe is a computer simulation

    12/14/2012 8:51:14 AM PST · by chessplayer · 77 replies
Some physicists and university researchers say it's possible to test the theory that our entire universe exists inside a computer simulation, like in the 1999 film "The Matrix." In 2003, University of Oxford philosophy professor Nick Bostrom published a paper, "The Simulation Argument," which argued that, "we are almost certainly living in a computer simulation." Now, a team at Cornell University says it has come up with a viable method for testing whether we're all just a series of numbers in some ancient civilization's computer game. Researchers at the University of Washington agree with the testing method, saying it can...
  • Chicago Teachers Union Latest Group to Stoke Class Warfare With ‘Fat Cats’ Video

On the heels of the controversial California Federation of Teachers “Tax the Rich” video, the Chicago Teachers Union has produced its own class warfare-stoking cartoon, “Stand Up to the Fat Cats.” The CTU is again attempting to slam Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the advocates of school reform as the “fat cats” who are simply looking to get rich off the government education system. The CTU apparently doesn’t want the billionaires and “profiteers” horning in on their very lucrative territory. Fashioned as a children’s book – likely for an audience of students – the CTU video claims several groups from around...
  • WaPo editors: Golly, Obama’s "balanced" fiscal-cliff approach is unbalanced

Barack Obama keeps claiming that he wants a "balanced" approach to deficit reform, but the editors of the Washington Post have a little difficulty trying to figure out what he means by "balanced" --- since his proposals have had a 4:1 ratio of tax hikes to spending cuts. The Post also notes that Obama has backed away from even the inadequate entitlement reforms he's previously embraced. Why, the Post's editors suggest, Obama may not really be serious about this whole deficit-reform idea. You think? Since the election last month, a few modest proposals have been floated to slow the growth in...

How do we know that the Fed pays attention to the things we write? Previously, commenting on the apparent lack of effect that the Fed's latest round of quantitative easing has had on stock prices, we observed: 1. The Fed is doing it wrong. In the two previous rounds of QE, the Fed purchased large quantities of U.S. Treasuries. So far in this round, the Fed is only purchasing Mortgage Backed Securities. The stock market just doesn't get the same bang for the buck as when the Fed buys up Treasuries, which acts to reduce long-term interest rates across a...
  • Why Not Regulate Guns Like Cars?

I was just on a HuffPost Live panel with, among others, Elie Mystal (Above The Law), and he suggested — as a gun control proposal — that guns should be regulated like cars. This prompts me to repost an item I posted several years ago: Cars are basically regulated as follows (I rely below on California law, but to my knowledge the rules are similar throughout the country): (1) No federal licensing or registration of car owners. (2) Any person may use a car on his own private property without any license or registration. See, e.g., California Vehicle Code §§...

This is fun for a Friday. Gov. Nikki Haley is now deciding who will take Sen. Jim DeMint's (R-SC) place when he leaves the Senate to head up The Heritage Foundation. Comedy Central host Stephen Colbert tops the list of preferred appointments with South Carolinians, according to a PPP poll: Colbert tops the wish list of who South Carolina voters would like to see join that body at 20%, followed by Tim Scott at 15%, Trey Gowdy at 14%, Jenny Sanford at 11%, Henry McMaster and Mark Sanford at 8%, Jeff Duncan and Joe Wilson at 5%, and Mick Mulvaney...

Obama says he'd be seen as moderate Republican in 1980s By Ian Swanson - 12/14/12 06:49 AM ET President Obama said his economic policies are "so mainstream" he'd be considered a moderate Republican in the 1980s. In a Thursday interview with a Miami-based local television station, Obama said he thinks few people believe he wants to impose socialism on the country. "The truth of the matter is that my policies are so mainstream that if I had set the same policies that I had back in the 1980s, I would be considered a moderate Republican," he told Noticias Univision 23...

Residents in Mansfield, Mass. are crying “bah humbug” after the local elementary school cancelled its annual holiday concert and replaced it with a program on anti-bullying. The holiday production at Jordan-Jackson Elementary School has been a long-time tradition in the community. But last year’s performance drew complaints from some parents who objected to the religious nature of the show. Read more: http://www.ktrh.com/pages/michaelberry.html?article=10641237#ixzz2F2neSSAX
